Title: Pearl Harbor Photos...
Post by: Treize69 on November 15, 2006, 11:47:59 AM
I just got these in an e-mail from my mother (who takes care of my 92 year old Great Uncle, 25+ years in the Navy and a SeaBee in WWII and Korea). These were mailed to him recently, forwarded to me this morning. Included the text from the e-mail and click the photos to enlarge, thumbnailed to save space and load time.

Never seen some of these before----must be
somebody 's private pictures they saved all this time.

These pic's are so clear....very sad....but, good that we can see them......

THE FELLOW WHO SENT THESE RECEIVED THEM  FROM AN OLD SHIPMATE ON THE USS QUAPAW ATF-11O. INTERESTING AS HE'S NEVER SEEN THEM ANYWHERE ELSE.

I THINK THEY'RE SPECTACULAR.

Some of them look familiar to me, but they may be of the same thing as a published photo from a different angle, I dunno.

And the following is the rest of the text I got with the same e-mail from
my father-in-law.

Pearl Harbor
On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor , Hawaii . By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships
were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island , where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexingtonwas ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States .)

In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing a aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decid! ed to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu , he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneoheand Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours,
consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets.

Only recognized the one of Cassin and Downs in front of Pennsylvania as something that's been published.  The one of Oglala on it's side looks similar to a well known photo but isn't the same.

The one with all the smoke and flame from battleship row showing West Virginia and Arizona burning is amazing.  Others of Arizona are amazing as well along with the one showing the Japanese(?) plane overhead.

And the best of them for me is the one showing Nevada on the move.  Wow!

Great stuff.  Thanks for sharing those:aok

Yeah, I left all that off mine. Didn't think it was "unique", I could see where it had been forwarded a few times. But I usually get an WWII related forwards from anyone I know and I'd never seen that, so I figured it was worth sharing.

And if Dan hasn't seen them before, they must be unpublished. :D

Those are spectacular and belong on display somewhere. It’s a nice touch that the developer showed the clock showing 12:20 but it’s a shame he didn’t credit himself or the photographer, unless his mark is “rr =”.

These photos are from a hardcover book I read as a kid in the 1960's called "Day Of Infamy" by Walter Lord.    If you can find it, it's an excellent account of Pearl Harbor.

I saw at Amazon there's a paperback you can buy of this book.  The old hardcover book I read was my dad's.  I've seen many of these pics before, in that book.  It was printed probably in the 50's or early 60's.  Big, glossy, B&W pics.
I have no idea where to find it now, probably at a used book shop?  It would be worth a look for it, it's a classic.

Some of those photos were on this website

http://dalesdesigns.net/ph.htm

They had a special investigation on one of the local news channels about these new pictures popping up on the internet about 3 months ago.  Apparently alot of people are getting these emails.
