Title: Dropping to desktop after cpu upgrade?
Post by: mudder on September 19, 2001, 07:09:00 PM
I recently swopped my celeron 550 for an intel 800 oc'ed to 950 on an Asus cusl2 mobo. Now I am dropping to desktop every five minutes. Any clues anyone?

I'm 99.9% sure you are getting the CPU or video card too hot.  Run the system with the case off and take the overclock off to narrow it down.  I'd also use a 300W powersupply if you don't have one already.

Thanks for the advise. Still trying to narrow the field of symptoms. One thing I failed to mention was that the DTD was from the Beta and when I tried the other version (briefly)I didn't drop. Also getting lockups and error messages in IL2 demo. Also Cable is acting strangely
I will set the OC back and see about cooling (I do have upgraded fans)

It's almost certainly going to be due to a FSB overclock pushing the PCI bus too far out of spec, OR heat and/or powersupply related.

A little knowlege is  dangerous . Things are stable now (I think). I upped the voltage in increments, it is now 1.75v and seems okay. Failed to remember my friend had the cpu overclocked in his machine to 950 at 1.95v. Does anyone know if these things "burn in" at thier selected voltage? Thanks again Bloom for your support.

dunno about burning in but pretty sure about burning out  :)
is the 150mhz o/c worth whatever performance boost you are getting?
