Title: Three weeks later and I still can't fly...
Post by: daddog on May 13, 2000, 06:43:00 PM
Three weeks without flying now... :-(  I am sh aking ba  dly .

All started with a reformat. Long story, but I am to the point of just trying to get my CH Combat stick to work.

I have a SB Live Value card and prior to the reformat had used it without problems. Now for some reason Win95 will give me the message "Joystick not connected" when I try to calibrate it. I have the latest drivers for everything, even bought a new pillow for my butt. I have reinstalled and installed drivers till my eyes were crossed. I now sit with my .45 at my side ready to shoot this blasted box.

In the jcenter utility that comes with it the numbers are kinda high 550 to 600. Their is a note that says numbers over 400 could cause problems.  It worked before the reformat, I don't understand. Also I made a custom stick in the Win95 controllers that also had the same problems. I am convinced my stick is good, but not that my port is bad.

I can get in Aces High without problems, but the stick is obviously not calibrated or maybe spiking. A friend suggested reinstalling Win95, but after what I have been through that kinda worries me.

I just want to fly again with my fellow dogs.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

You went to Win98 right? Did you try this?
 ftp://ftp.chproducts.com/pub/BetaSoftware/CHJoy98.exe

and if that doesn't work go here
 http://home.att.net/~stickworks/ (http://home.att.net/~stickworks/)

 and try this neat program:
 http://home.att.net/~stickworks/swdownld.html#CTFJV320 (http://home.att.net/~stickworks/swdownld.html#CTFJV320)

It might be time for a gamecard though.

Daddog,

When does windows say the jstick is not connected?  When you add the jstick in game controlers is it listed in the window and does the status say OK?  Do you get the not connected message only when you go to calibrate the stick?  Does it let you do the first step, the "center joystick and click a button"? Or does it just give you the not connected message when you get to the step where you actually have to move the stick?

Neg Westy, I have Win 95. Thanks for those links Westy, but they did not help.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) They will when I get it going.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Thanks air, I spent another 2 hours last night taking out my SB Live card (latest drivers of course). Then rebooted without it, shut down, installed again. Did this three times changing the PCI slot it was in. Each time I did go through the uninstall shield.

Sharky, each time the same story. It happens in the second step when I start to move the stick. I get about 1/2 way in my first 360 and it pops up with the "Not connected" message. Prior to that when I "add" it there is two CH Combat sticks listed:
CH Combat Stick
CH Combat Stick (Win95)
I have added each one though I don't remember seeing the Win95 stick choice prior to all this mess. Must be the new drivers that added this option.

Device Manager lists my SB card and there is not any conflicts in any of this. Odd thing is 1/2 the time it does calibrate in the CH utilities, but never in the Win 95 joystick calibration.

Two things, 1st you might have to do a fresh install of DX7a, not an update.  Second is to check and make sure that Windows is not showing you with two joystick ports.  You might have to go through a hardware uninstall/reinstall routine in windows.

Thanks pyro,

I have a full install of dx 7a because of the fdisk I had done.

In the System Manager under Device Properties it lists the "creative gameport joystick" under "creative miscellaneous devices". Under "Sound, video and game controllers" it only lists the "SB Live Value" card. Could that be a problem? All are noted as working properly without conflicts.

I should also add I called Sound Blaster very early this AM and Daniel said try to set up a 2 axis 2 button stick. I did and it recognized it and calibrated. He then passed it off to the stick or software.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) Not sure if that is correct or not. Seemed to easy to pass it off. He told me to call CH and they are only open when I am working.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
<sigh>

Gospel is sending me one of his game cards. Do I have to disable the SB port first before I use it? If so where do I do that?

Thanks Air! Up, mine pretty much looks like that. Thanks to all of you!

I actually talked my dear wife to drop our daughter off at school. That
gave me a window of 15 minutes to call CH Products.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/redface.gif) The short of the
long is I need to get a game card and I will be up and running.

He explained (and I really did not understand it), by formatting my HD
it improved the performance of my system so much the calibration numbers
in "jstick" were too high and not allowing Windows to calibrate it. He
said that the ports used in sound cards were really meant for midi, but
can and are often used for joysticks. In the higher performance systems
often they don't work and people have to get a separate game card, or of
course use the "USB" port.  I don't have a USB stick or pedals.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

In any case things should be working by later this week.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Daddog,

Thats why I asked you where in the process you get the message.  You should be able to calibrate it in windows by moveing the stick slowly when moving the stick to it's extremes in the cal routine.  I know this is not very technical, but what the message is showing you is a error not that it doesn't detect the stick.

Near as I can tell for some reason windows does not poll the stick fast enough or too fast and miss data from the stick and gives you that message.  The game card from CH or TM should solve the problem, but in the interim try moving the stick very slowly in the cal routine and you should be able to fly until your game card comes in.  For what it's worth I get this with my stick once in awhile also.  Don't know why its only show up every now and again.

First off, I have a dedicated CH game card.

My CH Products stick never calibrates correctly in Windoze, I just calibrate it  within the CH stick routines, and the game, and its fine.

Pyro,

I can't begin to explain the how or why of it, I just don't know enough about it.  The only thing I can say is I have had it happen with my CH setup (Combat Stick, Pro Throttle and RCS peddals)

The work around of moving the stick slowly has always worked.  The reasons I posted were just a guess on my part, I could (probably am) be completely out to lunch on what the real reason is.

Well "A" for effort Shark! I tried what you suggested, (several times), but no luck. Did what it always did, "Error stick not connected".  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Good news is gospel sent me an extra game card!  I with a little luck I will be flying by Friday!!

O MAN! I can almost taste it!!!
