Decided to walk downtown. . . ended up taking some 140 photos, but around 4:45 decided to go for a coffee and donut; by the time I left it was pretty dark and the city lights were on. This is my first attempt at nightime photography.
Don't think I've seen allot of night shots so I don't know how these compare? Also being my first time I have nothing to gauge them against...so any criticism is appreciated.
Is there any main rules to follow when shooting at night?

To this not-extremely-accomplished amateur photograper they look like pretty good shots.

Looks like a totally different city with all the lights shining. Good pics.

Part of the seasons Christmas decorations. They just started to put them up this week. I am standing couple hundred feet south of Front St (above). This traffic is coming from the expressway or lakeshore drive...this is what you see as soon as you clear the tunnel.

Nice photos Troonto. What ISO settings did you use?

used ISO 800

Thats not bad quality at all for such a high setting.
-
some were a little bit grainy when viewed in full size, but not too bad
To do better I will have to get a tripod to steady the camera in low light conditions allowing me to reduce the ISO
(try right clicking on the photos, then click properties; you should see the EXIF info settings)

Nice shots. Ain't digital wunnerful?
As in day shots, main thing in night shots is to achieve pleasing exposure and sharp image one way or another unless blur is intentional, i.e., main distraction in less successful night photography is wavy lines.

what would be the best CAM to buy for digi shots, say higher Mid-range level?

have a look at the link below, it has lots of info on digital SLR cameras in US dollars (they have a canadian page too)
I prefer CANON while others on this bbs prefer NIKON. Maybe some of them will put in their 2 cents worth here as well. They both produce excellent results. Ripsnort has a Nikon D80 and produced some really beautiful shots that he has posted.

My wife and I are getting the Pentax Digital SLR K100D for Christmas this year. Its not the most expensive but she has finally gotten to the point where having something digital will be cheaper in the long run. Besides she has gotten very good with her current 35mm Pentax.
