As of Friday I am in the DEP for the US Navy. I went and talked to a recruiter after my cousin signed up and took the ASVAB to see what I could get. I got a pretty good score and a pretty good job so I decided to sign up. I ship out March 27th.

Won't know until after Basic. I will be either MM EM or ET or a combination of those 3. It just depends.

This is exactly what it says in my contract.
"NF Nuclear Field (Open)(Non-Sub Volunteer) Program Guarantee"
It gives my bonuses and stuff, the physical and the having to keep my performance up. Then it says, "Rating Assignment - During recruit training personnel not already guaranteed Machinits's Mate training will be selected for training in one of the following ratings: Machinist's Mate, Electrician's Mate or Electronics Technician. This decision will be based on the needs of the Navy, test score profile, and upon the personal desire of the individual."

Actually, I originally went in as an ET in the Nuke field. Decided I didn't want to go through 2 more years of school and dropped out to the fleet. That's when I became an FTN'r!

I'm also considering doing CTI, but I have to take another test and I haven't done it yet. I can change my desired rating before final enlistment.

Just be careful around drunk Marines, after getting conked on the head a few times they dont see so well anymore, and if they see a white blur they might mistake you for a nurse. :)

Hope you don't mind being away from the family for long periods of time. Non sub means CVN's. Only other ships in the Navy with reactors. Underway forever stuck in the bottom of the boat.
Should have joined the Coast Guard. Too many cool jobs to list and we get to go out and do it everyday. WAY more laid back than the Navy too.

Welcome to the Adult world and doing something to make a difference. Congrats on getting the field of your choice. In boot, keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. It will go easier on you that way.

Actually, the CVs get underway less than the small boys. Getting in and out of port is a major evolution for a ship that large.

Getting to be on a carrier, even stuck down in the bowels of the boat has always been a dream of mine. Too bad it's slighty less exciting now that the Tomcat is gone. :( I wanted carriers because the cruises are longer, but liberty in a port is almost twice as long at times. I have a chance if I can stay in the top 10% of my class to get a slot for OCS. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot. My test scores are high enough.

Munkii, I was a nuke ET. lemme know if you have any questions... I'd also caution you to think long and hard about what it is you want to get out of your time in the navy. Looking back, I could've done without all the school and stress (one of the toughest schools in the nation, something like a 70% washout rate, stressful to say the least). I was attracted to the challenge of the nuke program, but looking back I would've enjoyed fixing airplanes better, might have stayed in longer...

Quick question for those of you who went nuke.. what was your ASVAB? I'm just wondering what the minimum to get nuke is.

98 or 99... from what I remember, your nuke rating will be determined by your asvab score, the top scoring guys were ET's, then EM's, then MM's. No idea what the minimum to get in the nuke program is though...

2 bits of advice.
1. No matter how "right" it seems at the time, don't get married for a few years. Along with this is don't get anyone pregnant. Trust me on this, keep your hormones in check for a little while and you'll be much better off in the long run. Have fun, but don't lock yourself down before you have a chance to do a little window shopping, if you know what I mean. Divorce rates and incidents of spouses cheating on deployed husbands are very high among the junior enlisted ranks, so avoid the trouble years and wait a bit.
2. Don't spend your first bonus or cruise pay on a motorcycle. I grew up in San Diego, and every time the carrier sailed, the for-sale section of the paper was full of used motorcycles at super low prices. Most of them were only 6 months old, had minor but expensive damage because they'd all been tipped over once or twice, and they all were selling for about half of what they were purchased for just 6 months earlier because nobody wants to pay for a motorcycle they're not using while they're on the boat. It's one of the quickest way to throw away $5,000 between cruises. Get a cool used sports car or truck and amaze your friends with how much extra cash you have to spend because you didn't buy some overpriced new car and get married to some girl you got pregnant on the first date.
Yes, they're out there and they're looking for YOU. I knew this girl while I was in San Diego and her weekly routine involved heading down to the country bars near the harbor and have sex with young sailors, condoms optional. Ewwww. I wasted a day of my life hauling her down to the planned parenthood clinic when she thought she was pregnant, because the last 5 guys she'd slept with had all sailed the week prior.
Stay away from the "future co-workers" at tech school too... As an officer, few things are sadder to me to see two married E-2s, one pregnant, struggle to figure out what the hell happened to their life as they have no money and are stuck trying to decide whether to have the wife quit work to raise the baby and try to survive on an E-2's take home pay, or both stay in and have strangers raise their child while their careers are harshly limited due to the requirement to have joint spouse assignments. And when they both deploy at the same time and have to pawn their child off on someone else to raise for a year... That's just not cool. So stay away from the tech school dorm "opportunities" too. A creative person like yourself shouldn't restrict your life like that before you even get started. Save a few bucks and wait a bit before getting married, and your whole life will be easier, trust me.
