Title: Flying the RV8
Post by: Hornet33 on November 20, 2006, 08:11:48 AM
OK who else other than BowHTR and I have landed kills in the RV8? Flew it in the MWA last night and managed to sucker 2 people into augering trying to kill me. Set a bunch of others up for the kill. Seems everyone likes to try and shoot that little plane down and they get "target fixation" and don't check their six. I was having a blast with that thing. Flew around for about 40 minutes, 3 seperate times in the middle of some fairly large furballs, and only had 1 hole in the wing when I landed. Went over near an enemy airfield and started flying around in the trees and got my 2 kills and then flew home. It was great. Now I have to make ACE in one sortie and I'll be happy.

Thing makes a great spotter plane also. Needs some guns though. Maybe 4 .303's in the wings just to add some flavor to it. What do you say HiTech??

4 .303 in the wings and its performance gets hindered....

Ever stop to think its Sooooooo nimble becuase its unarmed?

an RV8 with quad hispano is still going to own a hurricane 2c.

i tend to differ....

I base my opinion lift surfaces and power to weight ratio...

a hurri2c was modified to be able to carry quad hispanos (Need Kev's Xpertise)

Wats an Rv8's puny wingspan compared to an Hurri?

RV8???  I dun think so...

IMO i feel that the laws of physics and an RV8's engine are not going to allow it to have a performance equal ot better than hurricane...

RV8 can barely do 200mph and yet its gonna carry 4 hispanos that weigh about 40lbs each? we talking about 160 extra pounds....

I think thats a big burden for a plane that weighs a little over 1,000 lbs and whose engine only produces about 150hp...

jus my 2 Centz....

Uh Platan0 it's not really the plane that matters.

You could mount 2 20mms with cheek packs similar to B-25, B26 which would keep the weight near the center of the plane, OR mount them under the wing like bf109G10 or G6 or like the A-26.   If the plane is able to support two adults I would think it could handle the additional weight of 2 20mm and about 120-200 rounds of ammo.

The plane performs the same as it did at the con without the 20mm vulcan cannons "simmilar to those on a A10 warhog" so you thing adding lil squekers"or 303s" to it will hurt the performence no not a chance

make the pilot Lazs and let him shoot his peashooter out the window.

The reason it preformed well is HiTech did not add the extra weight to the plane.

I got 5 kills total from 2 flights in the RV-8 yesterday on the 19th.   I couldn't up in it today, HiTech must have taken the option away.   I think they should let us pick up pilots that have bailed out and fly them back to base. You could get perks for doing that too!
