Working on a F4U-1A Corsair. It's started out as Roger Hedrick's BuNo 55798 "17" from VF-17, circa January 1944. Its not weathered and I have some more detailing to do before the weathering.

Woo! More Hogs!
So....anyone willing to loan a guy a bare-bones template with just the panel lines, no other details necessary...?
-
Well, since you posted here, I guess you are asking me if I will send you the panel lines I drew.
The answer is no.
Here's why. If anyone is going to skin for this game they need to put the effort into learning how to do it correctly. There are alot of things that need done to complete a skin. The fact that anyone would ask someone else for what is quite frankly the easiest thing to do, would indicate a lack of dedication and the possibility that the person has not spent much time learning how these bloody things are in fact put togather. A good skinner will spend alot more time doing the details necessary to make it look correct than drawing a series of panel lines. Oh btw, don't forget the rivets.
I have been attempting to skin for a year now and am still learning things on every skin that I do, to the point that I go back and update skins that I have done in the past to bring them up to a higher standard.
Take the time and draw the panel lines yourself. Check online and in books and do it correctly, don't count on HTC's base skin for the correct lines. (Although they generally are correct, but sometimes you will find an error here and there, the P-51D's underwing lights were at one time on the wrong wing for example.)
There is not one person on this skinning board who will not help you and answer any questions you have on the how to's. Fester has posted an excellent tutorial and others can be found online.
I look forward to your completing a few F4Us Saxman.
Cheers,

Looks good fencer!!
:aok
-
Thanks JoeDog. Did your WWII incarnation fly F4Us at all?
-
Really nice work Fencer. :aok
-
nice F4U!
if i have a skin that isnt uploaded by HTC, can i put it in the skin folder
and use it just on my plane in AH? or does it only allow offical skins.
i dont care if enemy can see it or not. just what i see.
-
It would only show up offline Whels. Online it wouldn't even be an option. Online only allows HTC-approved skins.

While playing around with the panel lines I've been trying to find pics that show rivets on the wings for reference, (I CAN doeit, it's just a time-consuming process that keeps me away from other projects I need to get done) but no photograph I can find (either current or during the war) show them except for in a few places on the cowl and certain other parts of the wing (mainly around the ejection chutes for the guns, a couple places on the fuselage, etc). Any help?

Fencer, I think the white around the oil tank is too bright. That's not paint. That's tape. They taped it up so that no oil would fly back and mess up the canopy. Turns out it did that a lot, and they started taping the seams to stop it. It worked, as far as I've heard.
However, I'd imagine tape would get dirty, fade, be more grey, or also let a little oil seep through in a few spots.
-
actually, it'd be fresh tape each maintenance:) I would hope they didn't try to reuse it...:D
-
Thought that was the fuel tank that was taped, because they did the same thing for Corsairs that had the tanks in the wings.
-
I don't think they have to open that up and remove the tank every time... I'd think the tape would get a little dirty.
Anyways, just thought it might look better a little less... "glowing". :)
-
The tapes were to stop the pilot getting knocked out by petrol fumes and it needed replacing regularly. I'd guess the fuel attacked it.
Saxman this is the only rivet reference I could find for the Corsair. Its for an F4U-4, but its pretty similar apart from the engine area.

Good Corsair reference here @ this page. (http://www.airwar.ru/other/drawe.html) .
Also you can find a side rivet reference in the back of Osprey Aircraft of the Aces -8 "Corsair Aces of World War 2".

VF-31 flew the F3F, F4F, F6F, then the F8F.
-
Thanks OOZ, I did some checking after I posted that question and found that VF-31 didn't fly the Corsair. Also the same results for VF-5 and VF-3A the originators of the Felix the Cat mascot.

Final review before submittal..

Nice stuff Fencer. Almost....almost enough to get me to fly a Corsair :)
-
Fencer that looks absolutely beautiful!
-
:O love it!
-
Geez guys, thanks a bunch I appreciate it.
I think the choice of skin is a good complement to Greebo's excellent late 1943 VF-17 default bird.
I must say it's looking alot better since I faded the upper blue.
-
My one critique is the paint chips look rather "spotty."
I may try my hand at Kepford's ride to help fill out the Jolly Rogers. I've got a pretty good paint reference for some features, such as the darker blue surround on the roundels (original had the insignia red surround but over-painted. Due to fading of the original insignia the new insignia blue surround was much darker).
-
Chips a little too blurry for my taste. Looks great tho!
-
WTG Fencer, that's a really nice skin. :aok
-
Machine gun smudge marks are a bit too tidy for my taste. Perhaps you can blend them into the wings a bit better?
-
Too tidy, too blurry...

Submitted.
