Hello all.
I'm thinking of picking up this...hobby, - making models of either aircraft or ships.
It's ben a long time since I last touched this, and on top, my wife might be in on this as well, so I ask you, always-wise forum for advise, - where to start?
I am thinking plastic-aircraft in not the smallest scale, as well as possibly sail ships.
So, is it all Revell still today, or is there some nice stuff to begin with?
-
Tamiya and Hasegawa are a couple of the top model companys these days, I think you will find they have surpassed Revell in quality.
-
Go to some modelling shows/conventions. Most decent sized cities ought to have a modelling convention sooner or later. Browse around, see what everyone else is doing. If you see a guy with a judge badge, pick a model you like and ask him for his opinion. If the judge is nice and your question is open-ended enough, you might get a good bit of education right there. The judges will often be able to tell you not only the background behind the model, but also where the builder deviated from the kit, what materials and techniques they used, etc.
Of course you'll probably get a lot of very opinionated answers since lots of really serious modellers seem to think everyone else is doing it wrong, but if you don't let that bug you then you can learn a lot in just a few hours.
-
I'm thinking of taking it back up also, but there isn't a hobby shop near me. Can someone suggest a reputable website to browse and purchase models?
-
Dont start right off on the model you want to build and look good. Practice painting and other techniques on maybe a model of a car or something not worth while.
-
I'd recommend starting on a 1/24 or 1/48 scale model just so you don't get too frustrated right off the bat. Not knowing either of your modeling abilities though, it'd be hard to say.
Oops sorry about the link. Guess I should check those beforehand.

If I was going to get back into modeling I would buy these 1/18 scale “toys” and add detail, damage, change the paint scheme, etc.
Huge planes with decent detail for $50 to $70.

lol thats cheating...But who would know...
-
When I was a kid I had about 70 model airplanes hanging from my ceiling. Many of them were scenarios. I had a 1/32 F4U hozing a 1/32 Zero; bullet holes everywhere, three feet of painted-stretched cotton balls for fire and smoke, parts coming off and partially imbedded in the smoke. I had a flight of 4 Mosquitoes escorted by 1 or 2 Typhoons getting shot up by a 109. Etc. I loved adding damage but it was tough to do on a small scale. These 1/18 would be perfect for that. You can’t find any kits of that scale for that price. Heck, you can pay that much for 1/32 or 1/48 scale now a day.

A hobby I could sink my teeth into :)

Hey Eskimo they have those at Wal~Mart. They have a 190 D/P47 combo for $25 that I've been looking at for a couple of months. Very nice detail for a very resonable price...

I think the life sized one (the prototype actually hangs around some couple of miles away where her parents have a farm) would be too expensive :D

Hmm, the scale looks good, 1:1, do you have to paint her yourself?

I have only done aircraft, so here are my two cents regarding aricraft models
A good scale for detail and size is 1/48th. It's my favorite scale and I think it's also the most popular scale used.
1/72nd it too small and the larger scales require more detail for the size and most kits do not provide that greater detail at 1/32 or larger.
Tamiya kits are my very favorite, followed by Hasagawa. They usually are pretty expensive.
A great starter kit would be one of Tamiya's 1/48th P-51 Mustang versions with something other than a metalic finish. The kits are pretty simple, not very expensive, don't have a lot of parts, fit great and look great.

j-aircraft.com has a big forum on the topic

This guy knows nothing about models and what it takes to make them. Don't listen to a word he says. You have been warned.
Hehe...

Oh no.. not that far down and west. Thats the bible belt so you can imagine how us closer to civilisation can PARTAY! :aok
-
Ehh, so you're closer to Oslo. Out of memory I think the train ride was some 6 hours. On my return tour, I sailed from Kristanssand to Hirtshals.
And...those folks did not seem particularly biblical to me. Must have swapped books, - maybe in the sixties ? (:D)
-
lol yeah. :D
I live closer to Oslo. You may be right about the trainride time, but i havent taken train that way in 10 years. I have taken the boat to Hirtshals on a weekend and its paradise if you are in your late teens and into heavy drinking:D
The biblical folks prolly does not take the boat. I guess its un-holy or something.

Just recently I myself got back into modeling as a hobby and went through all the learning curves(well at least the basic ones). To this point I have solely built aircraft, most 1/48 scale but a couple 1/32. As some people mentioned Tamiya and Hasegawa are known as the "Shake and Bake" kits and usually provide the best models for learning on. But there are many other manufacturers that make quite nice models so if you were looking to build a specific aircraft that they didn't offer, a little research on the internet might lead you to a nice kit. As a starter I too would recommend a Tamiya kit, but I would pick one of their new P47 kits, they are very well done.

I have bought most of my kits from http://www.squadron.com and have never had a problem with them. They send out a monthly flyer which can also be downloaded at their site.
One other company I have used(only once) was http://www.greatmodels.com had no problems there either.
A great place to get tips, ask questions, get reference info and inspiration from their galleries is http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com It is by far the site that has been most helpful in helping me get back into the hobby.
Also if you have an interest in hooking up with local modelers you may want to check out http://www.ipmsusa.org/ I am not a memeber so I can't vouch for it, but looks like it could be very helpful
If you have any specific questions feel free to shoot me a PM. I won't even dare to say I have answers to many modeling questions, but I hopefully know which direction to point. :)
Good Luck and enjoy yourself

Talk to Bazi or Edo..those two guys have built more of those things than you can imagine.
