Name a product, it depends

Sony's TV's suck, their ES line has been potatod out with dime-store parts.   Their DVD players are suffering the same Quality Control issues as Denon.   The "Memorystick" is a crappy product to utilize in a camera, as well as the "burn to dvd" ones.

Samsung's tv's are better, as are their DVD players.

My Samsung 42" plasma tv is kick ass.  Love it.  Haven't bought ANYTHING Sony in years...probably since the mid 90's when I realised they had become crap.

Sony is going to, or has already stopped all production of PC monitors. Samsung has made some really good monitors and so has Sony.

I avoid sony like the virus infested plague carriers they are.  After getting bit by the rootkit debacle and seeing them get away scot free with a crime that would have landed you or I in jail for 20 years, I won't buy anything from Sony and I encourage everyone I know to find alternatives to sony products.

If they weren't such a great example of a truly 'evil' corporation, I'd buy their stuff because except for blu-ray fiasco and obsession with DRM, they make some good products.  But their anti-consumer stance has totally turned me off of their tainted technology goodies.

Hell, it pisses me off that my laptop battery was made by sony.  I taped a sticker on the battery that says "sony sucks donkey d***" for the karmic balance.

Samsung... I've been disappointed with cheap samsung electronics.  I had 2 samsung dvd players that would overheat and crap out about halfway through movies.  Their more expensive stuff is ok but their cheaper items just seem to be a little short on the quality side of the house.  JVC seems to be a good balance of quality and price, and JVC has never installed a rootkit on my computer or tried to tell me when, where, and how I can listen to music I bought.

JVC is a good brand. A few years back they were regarded as inferior around these parts but they have climbed up and have won a few awards for their TVs too now.

Sony has gone down on the "list" but is still seen as a very good brand by the general public.

I am starting to thing Panasonic makes the best electronics these days.

I recently bought a 50" plasma and I really like it. Was not that expensive compared to what they were a few years ago.

I looked at all the brands but Panasonic was the best in my opinion and I was not disappointed after I bought it.

My home theater is Samsung. It was not super expensive but I am already having a few issues with it and it is not even a year old.

It's people like this that allow Sony, Bose and the like thrive.

Read "Sound & Vision", "Home Theater Magazine" and you'll FINALLY get true results.    Bring a Consumers Reports to a high end store, within a minute you'll look for the nearest trash can.

Again Sony TV's suck.    Pioneer Elite are the best TV's PERIOD.

I used to sell retail electronics and I noticed that anything SONY was more expensive and ALLWAYS seemed to have less features (or completely benine features)

I've had pretty good luck with samsung except for their DVD players.

As a matter of fact I havn't had ANY luck with a DVD player since the first one I bought crapped out on me.  It was an old RCA that I payed $200 for when they first came out and that sucker lasted 4 years through 7 moves.  The powersupply ended up frying on it and I threw it away.

Since then I have had problems with EVERY DVD player i've bought.

I'm not a Sony fan like I used to be.  Having worked in retail electronics, the Samsung quality is almost as good as Panasonic.

I hate the Samsung PC stuff.  5 years ago, I bought 5 Samsung hard drives for a RAID 5 setup on a server.  13 months later, 4 drives died at once.  Yikes, so much for recovery...and they only had a 12 mointh warranty.  These things almost seem to KNOW when to fry up!

Another brand that makes some excellent plasma TVs is Hitachi.

The new Sony LCOS is superior to the Samsung DLP.

I currently have a 1-year-old Samsung 62inch 1080p DLP and it's a fine TV but it has its problems.  Samsung doesn't seem to be able to do very good signal processing.  Their DNIE edge enhancement is crap.  During football the picture looks really good until you notice the crowd has a sort of "shimmering" effect due to the DNIE.  It looks like the DNIE works too hard to find an edge, any edge, to enhance.  If you have a picture of a blue sky which is dark on one side and light on the other, instead of a steady smooth change in tone the DNIE draws edges which results in distinct bands.  In my DLP you cannot turn DNIE off but I understand this years is selectable, tells me that DNIE isn't all it should be.  Also, Samsung came out with the first BluRay player and, by all accounts, it's a piece of crap due to it's processing and may single handedly give the HD disk crown to HD DVD.  Samsung's problems with DVD is not new either, their HDMI capable progressive scan DVD player also has been slammed for poor processing and picture.

On the other hand I'm currently looking at my 20-year-old Sony 20-inch tube set.  Still works perfectly with an outstanding picture for a standard definition set.  In my other room I have a 32-in Sony XBR tube set that's going on eight-years-old.  It also works perfectly.  When I bought the XBR had I purchased and returned three other TVs that I wasn't satisfied with.  An RCA, Proton and Hitachi.  The Sony was a bit more expensive than the highest of the other three but easily had the best picture and features.  I also have a Sony DVD player and VHS recorder, neither has ever had a problem.

I jumped on the Samsung due to price and the fact it was one of the first 1080P sets available.   For the most part, I'm satisfied but I've since had the chance to compare it side-by-side with the 1080p LCOS Sony and other 1080p sets and I wish I had waited a few months and gone for the Sony.  The closest I've seen to the Sony with other wide-screen HD sets is either a plasma ($$$$$) or the Mitsubishi Diamond DLP although, IMHO, the Sony is better.

I have no idea what Eagl is talking about when he describes Sony as the Imperial Empire of electronic makers but I'm more than satisfied.

I have a Sony KV 2080R 20 inch (1987 model) in my bedroom.  The 1st ever major repair was in year 2000 when the bulb just blew up.  Back then i decided not to buy a new set because that TV can still keep up wit hthe year 1999-2000 models

For Plasma, Panasonic  owns top seed for both 42" and 50".
JVC owns the top seed for LCD 40" and larger, Sharp for 37", Toshiba for 32" and 26"

Rear-projection: Toshiba takes the top seed.

The only catagory Sony takes is standard-tube High Definition TVs and , probably because there is very little market activity in a standard tube TV set.
