just wondering about the best way to set this thing up....
the card has options that I'm not geeky enough to know exactly what they're for.
for example...what is anti-aliasing, and should it be on or off?
Any general advice would be apreciated.

In a GeForce 6600 the options you really need to consider are:
1) Anti-aliasing. Set this to "always off" or at MOST 2x. This isn't the most powerful of cards, and while it *could* do FSAA it wasn't really designed for it. It will slow down your framerate. If you get such a smooth picture that you're willing to settle a bit for better image quality, then try it out.
2) V-sync. For AH I leave this to "application controlled".
The rest you can pretty much leave default, except the "image quality" slider, that's up to you. I think I've got my at the mid-way mark, best balance between performance and quality.

Anti Aliasing is basically "smoothing" of edges. The card smoothes the edges by interpolating values for the pixels in between.
Just try it on AH.
If you set it to "controlled by application" it will be off in AH (you can also set it on off). If you mark the edges of the planes... they are a little jagged.
Now turning AA on (the more, the smoother) those "jaggs" get smoothened/blurred out and the wingline appears more straight.
AA is very trying on the Vid card/speed though.... as Krusty said, youre probably better off without the eyecandy (AA).
