absolutely getting it, already have AEP, FB, PF... this has the Pe2 update and the '46 planes like the Ta183

This is the last of the Il2 series until the completely new series comes out.  One of the best games on the market.

Next years' "Storm of War: Battle of Britain" will be another giant leap forward.

up to 4.07M (Pe-2 4.05M / Manchuria 4.06M  / '46 4.07M) - 4.08M will come later

I could careless about the 'wunderwaffe' crap but have pre-ordered the complete edition just to keep up with the rest of the folks I fly with and to keep some money flowing to Oleg...

Incidentally, any FB Bf 109 pilots (4.05M) interested in organized flying (Forgotten Skies (http://www.forgottenskies.com) / Scorched Earth: Xtreme (http://www.scorchedearthxtreme.org/)) 4./JG 53 is looking pilots to join us in various online wars.

This Friday Forgotten Skies launches Phase 1 - Normandy Campaign. Any one interested in flying with us just let me know. Missions start at 21:00 EST.

We have a temporary forum up here:

A 450 .pdf manual isn't what I'd call a bonus to to each his own.  I dunno if I'll get the game, I haven't been a fan of the other versions.  And my computer is ooooold.

SysReqs:
Windows 98/ME/XP/2000
Pentium III or AMD Athlon 1.0 GHz
512MB RAM
64MB DirectX 9.0 video card
DirectX 9.0 compliant sound card
DVD-Rom Drive

Ya think that's just a little low-balled?

Hey Bruno, could you do me a favour? I'm looking at getting this game, IL2 46 looks like it will have all the versions, so could you give me a brief synopsis of gameplay ? Is it capturing bases etc? My only experience with flight sims is AH and that's all I know, Are you flying against other people online ? or are you up against bots?

There's no main like in AH (old or current). Forgotten Battles is basically a single player box game with an online component. Oleg has said only around 10% of the folks that bought FB fly online regularly. However, on Hyperlobby (http://hyperfighter.sk/) you will find 400 - 600 folks online during peak spread across many servers. (currently there are 380 folks in FB on HL).

That said there 3 types of 'online' aspects to FB.
[list=1]

Most folks use Hyperlobby (http://hyperfighter.sk/) to find a server but xfire, gamespy and ASE all work.

You will find many servers with many different planes sets - from Pac stuff to eastern front and various time periods. The settings will range from wonder woman (no cockpit external view etc...) to full switch (all switches off - no icons, no plane icon on map etc...).

I only fly full switch and 4./JG53 is a member of Full Immersion Squadron Community (FISC) (http://www.gofisc.com/). However, you will find servers that vary greatly in their settings.

There are some drawbacks to FB. With cockpits forced on your head position is fixed (no setting head positions like in AH - you have snap views and pan views for your hat switch as well as mouse view and 3DOF trackir (no 6DOF)).

For the Folks that have flown air combat game besides AH this isn't a problem. Most folks I fly with (4./JG53 and JG14) flew a lot of Warbirds and the head position stuff isn't an issue. The AH'rs that come over have some issues but most have gotten used to it if they stuck with it. Many just gave up and went back to AH. There's tricks and formations that take care of the 'blind spots' due to the fixed head position.

I don't fly in public servers much (Dog fight  or Coops etc...). My squad mate Hitcher is the Admin for Scorched Earth: Xtreme (http://www.scorchedearthxtreme.org/) and we run and build various online campaigns that we fly with and against other squads. In fact I am building a Normandy Campaign Template and Hitcher is build up an '1946 Super Campaign'. This will be on a large map with all main nationalities (German - Japan - Italy - GB - USSR ect...).  There will be CVs and each squad 'owns a base' (some share bases depending on time zone). The objective being to attack each other and capture the other sides territory. How this works is SEOW allows for full control over all units (land, sea, air). Each squad / nation will have xxx amount of planes / ground units / ships etc... To advance your units you must first destroy the enemy units. For example to take town XXX you must first destroy the defending units and move yours into occupy it. The ground units will also be fighting each other. Artillery will be firing, tanks attacking each other, ships firing on each other etc...

Each squad will have a CO and each nation a command staff that plots missions and way points for all units (land, sea, air).

The other online war I fly regularly (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday) is Forgotten Skies. This is based on a dog fight server using scripts and DCG to create a 'scenario' like war. These are more open then coop based wars in that on DF servers you can have up to 150 players (FS averages 40 - 64 per regular mission). FS's Normandy Campaign - Phase 1 starts Friday. With the scripts the side COs plot missions for each flight, advance ground units etc...

There's no field capture by 10 man drunks like in AH.

Both AH and FB are great games in their own right but each have different qualities that some may prefer over the other. In FB you won't find anything like the old AH main arena and this is problem for a lot of AH'rs who come over to FB. When I was really into flying AH I could hit 70 - 80 hours over a month. In FB I fly mostly 90 minute 'missions' 3 times a week.

I don't know what type of planes you like to fly but I only fly 109s - In AH I only flew 109s and 190s. I haven't even sat in 90% of the planes in either game so I can't comment on XX plane's FM as compared to the others. I know the 109s in both games are very similar and I fly them both the same. 3cm in AH is a bit more easy to hit and kill with but I figure that's more a result of the simplified DM in AH and the range icons.

The bottom line is you will either like it or you won't - it will all depend on what  you are looking to get out of it.

  • Dogfight - max server capacity is 150 human players no AI (bots). Most hosts only average between 32 and 50 human players due to bandwidth. Each server is run by a different host (player - either dedicated server or host machine). The difficulty settings and plane sets vary depending on the hosts preference. Most Dogfight servers run a script to add aspects to game play. For example each side will start with X amount of aircraft and pilots and when these are killed / destroyed the map resets. Some include a ground attack component - i.e. kill all the other sides ground units and the map resets. There's no 'base capture' like in AH.
  • Campaign - based off NGEN (Starshoy's campaign generator that ships with the game). These are limited to 32 players max (16 per side plus many AI aircraft). Basically its the off line / single player campaign re-done to allow multi-player online.
  • Coop - 32 player max plus AI. This is a single mission with 16 human palyers per side plus AI with scripted way points and goals.

Thanks for that great write up sir, sounds like an air version of Red Orchestra, very similar with numbers and servers, this sounds like something I'd very interested in, I'll hook up with you once I get IL46.
thanks again wotan.

One other thing - The AI (bots) suck. IMHO using them for anything other then as bombers online is crap. However, some folks like to fill their coops / on line wars with lots of things to shoot. I don't play 'off line' as I find it completely boring and sterile. Others love the off line stuff.

It took me a while to find a place where I enjoyed the game. This is mostly about flying with friends in friendly matches. For a while all I saw was a community wrapped around super giant signature images and well designed web pages. For me the fun didn't start until those like me began to gravitate together and make the game something more fun.

As a 'lone wolf coming from AH and just popping in and out of public DF servers I found it hard to 'get into'. Once you get the game and want to try some online stuff just let me know and I will give you some pointers. As I said above I only fly 109s in FB and you are welcome to join us on Teamspeak and fly a few missions with us. I can also introduce to few other squads (allied / axis / pacific / east / west etc...) if you prefer to fly something other then the 109.

Wotan, although you haven't tried the other planes much, can you say how the FM's evolved since (I last played) the time FB had just come out?

I honestly thought I had kicked the cockpit habit, but seeing those vids gave me goosebumps

Moot, according to the forums over there every new patch porks something or someone else gets cheated... :p  Kind of like AH.

Seriously the FMs have been tweaked through the patches - sometimes for the good other times issues have popped up. The 109s are fine with the G-2 being able to dominate its contemporary allied opponents.

.50 cals aren't the lasers they are here. They may not 'blow you out of the air but they easily knock out control cables, PK and tear up your engine etc... Hizookas are just that Hizookas just like in AH. Soviets guns are probably slightly better then most other nationalities. Those ShVaks fly flat and hit hard.

The uber planes in AH are uber there - Spits - La-7. The Amis got their super planes 150 grade variants etc...

With all the new planes added since the FB release its hard to say how much the FMs have changed. The new planes have added new dimensions to the game. The '46 add-on with include the Ta-152C btw. It's not a D-13 but in that video it looked awesome.

The 152H was already enough to tangle with most planes, that C oughta be pretty effective.. Those auto-rockets on the LW UFOs, though :lol ...

You actually have to fly those rockets from your cockpit using the the arrow keys (Default) on your keyboard...

Be advised the rumor is that the Complete Edition ships with SecuRom 7. SecuRom isn't as bad as Starforce but can be a real bugger for some folks even though they run no emulation software.

I had problems running FEAR Combat, which was a free game due to SecuRom. If you have already pre-ordered don't fret as there are fixes. I won't post them here - they would probably get Skuzzinated anyway. Just check SimHQ or the UBI forums.

Pre-ordered mine from Gogamer.com the day it was announced.
Gogamer lists their release date as Dec 17th.
IL2 like AH has its good and bad points. If your computer will allow you to turn up the details, it is simply amazing. The full mission builder, while not perfect, is great once you get familiar with it. I have spent as much time playing with the FMB as I do flying.
I will be a happy camper if the joystick setup has been improved as reported.

There is room on my hard drive for both sims. :)
