VISTA VERSIONS
Vista Business
Vista Enterprise
Vista Home Basic
Vista Home Premium
Vista Ultimate
Vista Starter

Geessh how many versions do we need anyway?  So if I buy "vista starter" does it use less resources on my PC? or is it only a watered down version that doesn't included extra stuff like IIS or notepad, wordpad etc?

Vista starter will be like your old Dos 6.22 bootup disk. Bootup, command screen and everything else you need to get extra. :D

Nobody needs Vista at this moment - nor there is any reason whatsoever to get it. Only fools who are willing to do betatesting and pay for it will install it for the next 2 years or so.

If we're lucky, hardware will develop so much in two years that we can get a computer that will perform the same as yours does now in XP for the same money using Vista.

Anyone tried installing Windows95 to a current hardware? It flies like it's on crack. Too bad they've stoped driver support.

I can just hear the tech support people now, "It's not a bug, it's a feature."

vista home basic is nothing more then a renamed verson of XP , you are not getting the Aero pack (the eye candy cpu hogging bells)  in the basic versons.

the 32 bit versons work ok with only a few headaches .... the 64 /dual verson is a nitemare ... alot of the hardware still doesnt work due to drivers ect .

I love the vista look and feel... but it is a resource hog that probably needs another 6 to 8 months tweaking.

Figure the OEM version of XP will disappear in the next couple of months, or sooner.  Might want to purchase a copy now, if you can.

My XP already looks like Vista with the dock and everything, so why would I want Vista? No, general rule #1 regarding Microsoft products: Wait 2 years after launch before you buy their fancy new bug ridden OS.

I've had Vista RC1 running for awhile on a "test" machine. For the first time I'm going to stay away from a new MS OS for awhile. At some point I'll be sort of forced to get it because of the need for intimate knowledge for my work but will probably be using it in a dual boot configuration with XP for quite a while. Its a resource hog. Unknowing consumers who install it on yesterday's hardware are destined for a big shock. I can hear the howling now. And I really don't see business users instantly flocking to it either. Even if it had no problems large businesses are not going to drop a mass of $$$ just to have the latest OS, especially considering that in alot of cases to do so would necessitate a much larger expenditure to upgrade their hardware too.

I'm gonna sit this one out for home use for a while. It'll be interesting to just sit back and watch.

Unbelieveable. What will Microsoft do when Apple runs out of ideas? It's OSX five years ago with less features at 3 to 4 times the price.

Even the Zune is a failed Toshiba MP3 player that has been recycled and rebranded.

Microsoft has achieved critical mass - it looks and acts like a government bureaucracy.

No kidding Roscoroo.... I'm running the 64-bit XP on my game machine, but driver issues and lack of support for it becomes a problem at times.  Best security I found for it comes through Avast.  Nothing main stream seems to like 64-bit in the Windows world.  Hopefully Vista will have better support than Win-XP64, but I would not count on it for a year or more.  No reason to hurry an upgrade.

But, I've got mine pretty stable over the last year.  Only 1 reinstall so far (knock on wood), and otherwise does 95% of what I want it to do.

Now.... time to find a job in a Mac or Linux shop......

It's not actually my desktop, just an example from Crystal XP.net, but my desktop looks similar. The developers are French.

Read this before you waste the money on vista, I think the is just the start f a long process called "man I gotta go to that site again and buy this now"

Make a mac or learning Linux look pretty good right about now.

"the crystalxp vista looking shell"

Is crystalxp something that improves system performance by replacing bloatware from the MS XP os?  Like 98-Lite did?  Or is it just a different shade of lipstick on the same ole pig kind of a thing?

I just ordered, what I figure to be, my last two copies of XP Pro.  That should hold me for a bit.

Westy, I dunt think it is possible to avoid the ship known as M.S. Bloat.  Much like an icebreaker, once she gets moving, she is hard to stop, and when she crashes into something she just keeps on going.  Slowly, but moving nevertheless, in spite of what you want her to do.

Could you burn a disk image and upload it to your server, then post the activation numbers here?

Now that OS X runs on PCs I see no reason in buying vista. My next computer will very likely be a mac. If only HTC release an OS X version I would dump XP as well...

You mean XP runs on Macs (using Boot Camp), right? I've never read of anyone getting a fully functional OSX to run natively on a PC.

That is correct Rolex.

So buy a mac and run bootcamp withXP for the software and games you need.

My laptop is a Mac, Nilsen. I know, but I'd want a 21" iMac and there are many people not able to get Boot Camp running on that model. Boot Camp is not yet stable and both cores are not working on many models.

If the OS-integrated version (in Panther) of Boot Camp has most of the issues fixed and runs on 21" iMacs, I'll do that for sure.

(BTW, congratulations on Norway being the number 1 rated country to live in again!)

oh I see. I have never tried the bootcamp software because i have a Powerbook with the G4 cpu.

(thx... i think we "won" because as of yet we have not been exposed to PS3 and Vista :D . I expect we will drop down after they are both on the market here )

Uh, if you continue to run XP, there is no need to buy a Mac to do it.  Just keep running it on your current computer.  Seems a bit simpler to me.  :)

System requirements vary based on which version of Vista you want to run.  For the all out version of it, figure needing 3 to 4GB of system memory, an $800 video card, and a quadruple-triplematched-fortified CPU.

Then you can run the things your Pentium 3 with 256MB of RAM and a 16MB video card can run at the same speed.  Woot!

Of course, I am exaggerating a bit.  In a few years, the hardware will be available to allow Vista based computers to perform at the same speed as current XP based computers do. but with a truckload of restrictions.

I can hardly wait to hear the screaming when someone tries to make a copy of thier just purchased HD movie and Vista says, sorry, you cannot do that.  Between DRM and HDCP, you will be lucky to be able to burn anything on a CD/DVD.

As a related note I've been visiting [H]ard forums lately and people are reporting identical gaming performance with Vista compared to XP. Sounds a bit weird to me though.

Hehe... of course you're right. ;) I'm just itching for an upgrade since I have a processor inferiority complex - I only have one. I'll either put together a new Conroe box, or do the iMac next year, depending on what happens with boot camp.

I just loaded Vista Ultimate on an extra HD and installed Aces to see how/if it would work.

Aces installed just fine, but wouldn't run. This is probably due to the horrific lack of drivers for Vista.

Hopefully things will change once it's released and companies provide new drivers.

Wabb

P.S. Anyone else try Aces on Vista? I'd be interested in hearing about it.
