Title: Chalk another one up for Orcas
Post by: Red Tail 444 on November 30, 2006, 11:02:03 AM
Just about everyone with access to a 24-hour news channel has seen the home video of a killer whale attacking his trainer. The whale is seen repeatedly trying to submerge his trainer of 10 years—

To say that its actions were motivated by hormones is a bit like saying a lion's hunting instincts are motivated by his appetite.

The point is humans cannot predict, let alone control, these natural behaviors. The danger in thinking we can control these animals is injury, maybe even death. I'm no PETA fan, but watching shows like this or elephants wearing pink tutus and riding tricycles doesn't do it for me.

It didn't do it for these folks, either...

hey, c'mon, you can't blame this one on the orca:

Quote
A dead, naked body was discovered in the early moring, draped over Tillikum, an adult male. The man had hidden in the park after closing, removed his clothing and jumped in with the whale. This was Tillikum's second fatal incident, the first being the 1991 death of Keltie Bryene.

There you are, a Killer Whale, master of the deep, now humoring the aquatically challenged in a wading pool.  Smart to feign cooperation to get an endless smorgasbord.

Every once in awhile your superior sense of the absurd takes a break and you can't resist showing who is really top of the food chain.  But it's risky to attempt such a fine line between bestowing respect and inducing fear-driven retaliation.

The first Killer Whale to walk and drive a car will be the next Republican Vice President.

owning pitbulls and entering the water with an apex predator qualify you for a slot in the year's darwin award.

Killer Whales actually come from different families.  Based on the family, you get different behavior.

The families are differentiated by what they eat.  You have the fish Orcas, the seal eating orcas, and the dolphin eating orcas.

The seal eating orcas and dolphin eating orcas have no reservations in swallowing you whole.

The fish orcas are rather nicer.  Most show orcas are fish eating orcas.  But occasionally you get a rogue.

I once paid to have "dinner with shamu" at Sea World in San Diego. Basically we sat right next to the holding tanks and watched the various orcas swim around while we were served a crappy overpriced dinner.

Anyway.... while we were eating a little kid at the next table points and says "look a seagull". About 2 seconds later there was a few feathers on the surface and a tint of red in the water. The little kid screamed... it was the highlight of the meal.

Every carnivore's basic thought toward humans is, "What ever made you think I wouldn't eat you if I had the opportunity?"

Once in awhile maybe they should haul one of them up and out of the pool and beat it with a stick so they know who's boss.
