When you attack a bad guy you maintain a position behind but outside of his turn, you lag behind. In prop planes you would use this to keep up your speed or to gain back speed on a maneuvering bad guy.

Do a google search for:

Lead Pursuit
Pure Pursuit
Lag Pursuit

From Sodas article on the Trainer Homepage (http://trainers.hitechcreations.com) under Tactics -> Fighter:

Lag Pursuit

A little appreciated and under-used tactic, I don’t think most people understand how useful it can be.  The Lag pursuit has you follow outside the path taken by the enemy plane.  You will have to create a faster turn-rate and a higher speed in order to stay in position since the enemy is taking a smaller radius turn with a shorter path.  The beauty of the lag pursuit though is it tends to allow you to build energy since your turn radius is larger with a longer path, making it unnecessary to sustain as tight a corner and thus pull fewer G’s.  Lag pursuit also slows the closure rate on the target since you fly a longer path.  Another asset of the lag pursuit is it tends to put you in the low – 6 position where the enemy has a tough time seeing you (because his rear fuselage blocks his view) so doesn’t know when you are setting up to take an attack.

it is where you wiggle the cable of your cable modem in and out whilst chasing someone.

As I understand it.

Lead Pursuit

- where you point your nose ahead of the bandit, attempting to turn tighter and lead for a shot.

Purpose - shoot the bandit.

Pure Pursuit
- where you point your nose right at the bandit, attempting to maintain the same turn and flight path.

Purpose - stay close and tight on the bandit, forcing a mistake by the bandit.

Lag Pursuit
- where you point your nose a bit behind the bandit, attempting follow the bandit, but with less tighter turns than him so as to maintain or even increase maneuvering speed until ready to transition into a Lead Pursuit.

Purpose - stay on the bandit, maintaining speed/maneuverability, while he maneuvers frantically and loses E.

I've found halfway decent success with lag pursuit, likely because the pursued can no longer see me on their six, relaxes from the turn, and, BAM.

Course, it happens to me too.

I really have got to figure out how to finagle a TrackIR.

I use it alot to as it seems to reserve E a bit better. Also a form of lag pursuit would be when I follow a guy vertical and we are both stalling, but he's trying to hammerhead back down on me for a face shot. I slip to the side a bit and stay outside his nose as he's coming back down, cut throttle then roll in behind.
