Gorgeous aircraft.  EB-47s (electronic countermeasures versions) were at my first Air Force assignment at Lockbourne Air Force Base (now Rickenbacker) near Columbus, Ohio.

The 801st Air Division had 80 EB-47s there.

The EB-47 used a big drag chute to slow down after landing.  One pilot proved the EB-47 would not take off with that landing chute deployed (it got activated accidentally during takeoff).

Awesome jet actually, IIRC i saw a show on the military channel and one pilot said they had to be careful because the plane in level flight would go so fast it would rip the wings off! Due to its powerful engines. Or maybe it was not to apply to much thrust at once..not really sure wich

I remember the 47. It was a great bird and a heck of a transition into the pure jet age. I always thought it was very graceful and elegant.

If you get a chance, pick up Tex Johnstons autobiography. He's got alot of detailed mission info (test pilot for the B-47) in there. Great read.

I always like the B-47.  Probably was of the prettiest looking planes ever made.   I can understand why they kept the B-52 for so long but why did they get rid of the B-47.

Underpowered, small payload and the high speed stall was unforgiving, according to Tex Johnston.

Another point is that the deep penetration missions were pretty much considered to be one way given the short legs on the bird.

Ah yes, another good point. However even with a B-52 returning from a mission deep inside the USSR, its not like they'd have a landing strip to land on anymore...;)

i grew up in omaha near offut AFB (formerly SAC)

miles and miles of 4 lane interstate with no grassy area in between, just cement pylons ...  moved quickly for one big huge landing strip.
