Title: Adjusting Your Views
Post by: FiLtH on December 04, 2006, 12:47:18 PM
I've been flying with a few new guys lately who were unaware of being able to adjust your views from the cockpit, to make seeing the enemy easier.

Heres how I have mine adjusted.

Lets take a Spit5 out to the runway and turn off the engine for peace of mind.

This is the default view looking forward:

While looking forward, press and hold the down arrow until it makes the cockpit stretch out away from you as far as it can go. Now press and hold the Page Up key until it raises your gunsight dot (pipper) so its just at the border of the gunsight glass.

Some people actually mark their moniter with a marker pen on the pipper, then adjust the Page up view till it disappears, but leaves the ink dot in its place on your moniter. This gives a great view over the nose.
Now while you have this view, hit the F10 key to save the view. Now whenever you are in a Spit5, you will always have this forward view.
New Forward View:

For the Rear View:

While holding the 2 key on your number pad, press and hold the Page Up key to make your rear viw zoom way out. Now press and hold the left arrow on your keyboard to slide the view to one side. Hit the F10 key to save the view.

This will give you the best 6 oclock view so you can see enemies sneaking up on you.
New Rear View:

All the views can be adjusted this way. Don't forget to include the views while holding the 5 button at the same time and adjusting those views as well.
Example: High right wing view= 5, and 6 keys on number pad at the same time.

Now you have the Spit5 done. Do all the planes you fly the most at first and go back and get the others later. Get up and try it out. If you never did this before you should see a huge increase in your situational awareness, and ability to get deflection shots on the enemy planes.

Well done Filth. You may want to post that in Help & Training.

Excellent tutorial FiLtH.  :aok

If you use Track IR (http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/) (head tracking viewing system), all of the head movement you get from PageUp, PageDn, the arrow keys, etc in addition to the keypad view keys are accomplished by moving your head.  Therefore it is not technically necessary to set these head postions if you use TIR.  However, it is still useful to do so as you can temporarily override the TIR view by pressing a view key.  I still have my POV hat programmed with the eight position views in addition to an "Up View" (KP5) to provide the "lift vector view" and the 45 degree views by chording KP5 with the other views even though I use TIR exclusively.  Some years ago, I spent several hours meticulously going through every view of every plane in the game getting my head postion in that view set for maximum visability.  When I bought TIR, I thought that effort had gone to waste but soon discovered that I could mix the two together.  If I want to quickly check my six, I can turn my head around and take a look or I can simply pull back on the POV hat.  Of course, if I move my head, the view will change, but for the fraction of a second that I need, I can check that view.  Very handy.

Thought this might make a reasonable addendum to great posting.

That's so cool. How do you look backwards?

It's configurable.  I adjusted mine so that head movement to about the corners of my monitor is enough to turn my "head" all the way around to the rear.  Check out the videos at the Natural Point web site and you'll get the full feel of it.

Looking backward isn't too bad. It's not seeing the front view plowing into the tree leaves that gets me. :D

Good job Filth for explaining this!

I've suggested before that HT simply include optimized views as default for all planes and vehicles when you download for the first time. No one wants to look at their headrest to check their six. No one wants to look straight at a canopy frame. So go ahead and make the game downloadable with optimized view setup files. That would save newbies from flying around with poor visibility, and if anyone doesn't like every setting of the default "optimized" view then the settings can still be changed.

Just a suggestion.

Snefens has optimized the views on all planes and has the views available for download: http://ac-smolf.dk/snefens/views/views.htm

I dont know if those have all the latest planes, but that should get you started.
