I know the argument has always been that 2 countries won't work. That being said, with the complaining and the numbers imbalance, how much worse could it be?
So since we're testing stuff, what if we could try something like the following. And bear with some of the silliness, it's what husband/father types do while waiting for wife and daughter to finish shopping.
Imagine if you will the peacefully coexisting countries of pWN Land and zOMFG Land, on the shores of the Sudz Ocean.
One day on the border of the two countries, between the Hitech Mountains and the Pyro Peaks, a magical sheep is discovered, soon to be named the "Golden Skuzzy".
Both countries claim the Golden Skuzzy for thier own and war breaks out.
OK enough of the back story for this fabled war.
The Ground Rules:
-Two countries. 2 new names. No loyalty to a chess piece from the past getting in the way.
-Country cap on numbers. Say its 400 tops, 200 each side tops.
-No ENY. Jets enabled at the rear fields near the capitals. Fly whatever the heck you want otherwise.
-No maps with lines. Hopefully the mountain ranges steer people into the gaps. Also plenty of places for GV action. In theory I'd have a tank town either dead center or on one of the edges so the GV guys can shoot at each other in piece.
-The Navys are involved. With enough water and the coastline, those CV's become more important and all those 'end around' experts can try for their "Inchon Landings".
Airfields and V bases with the same ack as at present all over the place.
Have at it.
With only 1 front to watch, potentially the defenders will have an easier time and hopefully with a country limit on numbers, folks will see some point to trying to even it out.
After all, who wouldn't want to claim the "Golden Skuzzy" as their own?
Dumbing it all down is the key I think.
Map is purely a quick lash up to illustrate the point. It's not to scale and obviously I didn't place airfields and V-bases.

the sad part is 2 sides would work great... even better than 3 sides.. its just that alot of players are so very loyal to their chess piece that if 2 sides were implemented the ah community would get thrown into chaos..
-
In my Opinion Since We're already experimenting with all sorts of Wierd S***, it wouldnt hurt to try... ANd if iit didnt work with PWN land and zOMFG land then We go back to the way it is....
L0L BTW love the Narrations and the names :lol :aok
-
If I logged in and saw that my beloved pointyhattedhorseycastle icon was gone, I would slit my wrists. I'm willing to try anything, especially if it tries to improve gameplay for all, but I don't think a majority of that same 'all' feel the same.
I guess we've got the coad stuff for 2 country setups and maps in place, maybe HT will flip out one afternoon and stick something up in place of one of the lame war arenas.
-
I'm willing to try anything once, maybe twice. And if I like it, I'll make a habit of it.

i want to play for country C.
or we could all go to AvA, :lol ...no that would never work.

IIRC, HiTech doesn't like the 2 country system. Shame because Dan has a really good idea.
ack-ack
-
actually since the knights and the bish always attack the rooks at the same time anyways... just change their name to "bites" and let them stay on the same team. :)

Yeah. Sure. Okay.

that's just creepy, that's what that is.

People won't switch sides now to even things up so what makes you think that'd it happen with a two country system?
I can see it now. Every day you log in
ZOMGLAND=350 players
PWNLAND = 2 players
That'd be fun.
At least with three countries the two sides that have less players can gang up on the the side with the numbers advantage.
Thats the reason we have a three country system. In an indirect way it keeps things balanced.

If you guys remember the Old MA, all it took was for 2-3 large squads working together to make things happen on the map. Well, one of the reasons the old setup would get imbalanced, is that where the large majority of people flew for one chesspiece, and stayed there, A few of the squads would rotate and fly different countries every tour...from time to time, they would all happen to jump to one country at once. Then, you would have a large, old style MA that was out of whack by 50-75 players or more...and then, you had the steamroller.
I would think, that with 2 countries, The fights would be pretty large...If you had a 400 or more player cap, and the sides are roughly equal, then you are looking at + or - 200 people going into the same fight(or in a small area.) Now, with that same cap, But you split into 4 countries, you are looking at + or - 100 a country...this might open up some better oppurtunities for front lines to spread out. The fighting would be along more than 1 common front, so people would be a little more spread out. It would also hamper the 2 countries ganging on 1, because you will have a 4th state to contend with. Otherwise, the only way you can inhibit ganging, is to go with 2 countries.
-
I kinda like the idea, some state that people won't wanna move from their chess piece.
Will this "new test arena" idea have a way to play on Team A or Team B, then the next day go back to Bish, Nit or Rook? or do you have to play as A or B the whole time?
-
From experiences in another unmentionable game the two sides division can have bad effects in general atmospehere of the game. I think that is some kind of bad feature in human nature that the less enemies the deeper the gap between them. Maybe that is the reason why some game makers do not go with three, but with four or even five countries?
We could even see a sharp division in discussions on this BBS. PWNer: "Hell that dude knows his business, but I cannot agree with him because he's from zOMFG land." etc...
:p

Or we could just bring back the old MA and have 500 people on at night :aok

I'm only Loyal to my squad ...... and my Wife.

Well now that we have the option, why not run a month test and let the people decide. Try one arena with just 2 sides, see what happens. Make it a late 43 early 44 plane set. Heck we could try 3 or 4 different ideas with different plane set & capture rules in each. At the end of the tour the logs will show which have more potential.
-
Too much ZOMFG-coating loses the possible point.... :huh
-
I think 2 countries is a great idea .
-
I think it'd be a good idea if HT implemented a Testing Arena AKA LWOrange to try all the new ideas that the community dishes out..
-
We once had a Rook female give birth to a Bish baby from some indiscretion across fronts. We could tell by the pointy head. We took it and threw it into the volcano of the center big isle.
Seriously though, the whole loyal to the chess piece thing gets in the way of alot of fun we could be having.
-
That's my thinking too. The heck with the chess piece bit. Throw it out, along with the silly loyalty to it and start again.
Let people build up another silly loyalty to a name and work it so that the numbers balance better and the fun can be the same for all.
It's that silliness that makes me think dumbing it down is what needs to happen since folks can't seem to see very far past the tip of their own noses in terms of the overall play for everyone.
-
And as a BTW. This isn't meant as an AvA set up. No rolling plane set. let em all fly for both sides. Get rid of ENY.
The key is a cap on country numbers and one front fought over by two teams.

I think this is the part that requires magic. :D
-
Why have countries?
Just make a bunch of bases from which we can fly any plane we want to fly.
Also lose the hosed 'Rank/Perk' system.
All planes should be available to anyone, anytime, any base.
I remember the days when things were less complicated, and nobody cared about a few whiners..........gimme a break.

im all for it!!
*side note: since when is it the Knights and the Bish ganging the Rooks?

Funny, ever since the implementation of the "Newest System", Rooks have had 120+ which had more than the other two combined. Not to mention over the weekend, with all 120+ hitting Knights who had 40-60. Well, one rook was having a gv battle with bish, so 119+.
I'm now "the evil Rook that switches to help the outnumbered" instead of flying 202's in a LWA because other's feel the need to pad scores, and land 10+ vultchs.

love the idea!!!! the "keep it simple stupid" approach!!
the only thing i would add to that scenario would be, rivers. lots of rivers,
with pt boats on em!!! think of the mayhem they would cause!!!

This thread probably belongs in the Wishlist area of the forum.
Just how much game modification do you expect the programmers to do simply to test out an idea that I seriously doubt will be very popular?
I would vote for mojo7’s anarchy arena before I would vote for this two team Golden Fleece of HTC staff patronage proposal.
:furious :furious :furious :furious :furious

The last thing needed is "dumbing down" This game needs to be harder and more complicated. Make your brain work a little.

Yeah right, take a good idea then limit the plane set? Neither the early war or mid war arena's are doing that well right now. Hardly anybody in them and you want to limit plane set in another arena (if it were to happpen)?

oops double post

I don't think an RPS would fly around here either.
-
The whole point of this latest dumb idea of mine was to take all the reasons to grumble away from everyone.
No chess piece loyalty. No ENY. Capture to your hearts content.
But there is a country cap and only two countries.
-----> There they are. Go get em in whatever the heck you wanna fly, but you only have one front. You want a tank? You got em. You want a Carrier? You got em. Bombers? Sure. Fighters? You bet. Fly whatever, drive or sail if you want.
Considering the horde mentality, they'd probably complain about a country number limit though. "Why can't we have 400 vs 100?!? It's war!"

Come on, Tiff. You played that defunked game that shall remain nameless. It's not being loyal to a chess piece. The symbol has diddly to do with it. Az, Bz, Cz, Red, Blue, Green, chess pieces, etc.. If what you suggest was done, in no time, it would be "I'm loyal to the NorWesters and I won't change", "The SouEasters rule..NW's suck!!". Unfortunately, the majority of people like being herd animals and they like the idea of being "loyal" to their herd.
In past discussions with HT, he has said he won't restrict country country choices for his customers (and encouraging people to change countries...the ENY modifier...isn't a restriction.......it's an encouragement. :D). Of course, he also said that he wouldn't create separate MA's. So....who knows. Nice to know he is capable of being flexible. :)
Btw, while trying to find ways to take away people's reasons to grumble is a laudable goal. It is totally unrealistic. Were you to succeed, the folks in Whiner's High would complain about having nothing to complain about!!! :D
