Title: ***Alert- Bomb Wing Mission***
Post by: FiLtH on December 07, 2006, 06:41:24 AM
For those involved in Bomb Wing - (see other thread for info)

Friday, December 8th at 9pm et will be the first mission. Im sorry if its too late for some, but since this is an FSO off week it should be a good slot to do it. We will wait in the LOBBY for 15 minutes for late-comers.

Plan-   Everyone involved, from bomber pilot, to escort pilot, meet in the LOBBY at 9pm et. Thats east coast USA time. From there, we will take a head count and see which late war arena can support all of us as a group. If neither late war arena can support us, we will take it to the Mid War arena. ( We will tell players in the Late Wars if we are going there to provide a fight).

Once we are ready in the LOBBY, we will goto the chosen arena and be BISHOP. Once there we will tune to vox channel 166, and meet at a rear base to conduct a pre-flight briefing, select a target, and start base.

I'd like to be rolling by 9:30 pm et. There will most likely be a mission called Bomb Wing posted.

  See ya Friday night!

i not sure i wana bomb knits......i dont mind being a bish tho lol

god save the knit king! :o

edit: would it be a full strat war? like city/troops/aaa/hq etc? or base bombing?

a proper work out of the strat system could show people how bad NOT defending strat is......

Alot depends on if we can all get in one of the late war arenas. If not we'll go to mid war. We dont plan on being 30k, and if the opposition is cool about not bringing 50 262s, we will stay that way. If not we'll end up going higher next time. It may take a few tries to get it right. Usually does with something like this.

I'm in..but be forewarned.

70 people will show up in the lobby, get the briefing and then a third of them will turn tail and join the defending force just to have something juicy to attack.  I would fully expect many 262's and other cannon-armed vermin patrolling the sky high above the intended target.

I'm not worried about that possibility myself...just makes it more fun.
Besides, I'd prefer to fight my way to target anyway...but we will be well served if we can recruit some dedicated gunners to help out.  Don't wanna get jumped when I'm in the peeper gettin' ready to unleash iron carnage.

Probably see a 262 or arrado as a "trailer"... but p47N's and Ta-152's would be plenty to deal with.......

You are right Delta, but its about the only way we can do it with the arena structure. Im sure some guys will be there, but we wont discuss anything vital until we goto the chosen arena, and become bish. After that point if some still switch after a briefing, which some are bound to do, like you said...it will still be fun.

Im sure it will take a couple of these missions to get a feel for what we can expect. If we face all 262s, then next time we'll goto 30k and make them work for it.

Usually most folks enjoy the bomb runs, on both sides, and try to keep it balanced. After all they are alot of fun to intercept and if you frustrate the effort too much, they wont happen very often, or very openly.

heck...why not just call it out over chan 200?  Folks are going to know anyway so why not just get more participation and make it that much better?

Do you want it to be a milk run?

as long as they see it, a few might get in 262s

i know we had 6x262s in the air against a bish raid against our HQ once.... didnt really help but i killed 9 before i lost my tail. (i got pinged as a exited the rear of formation.)

Well I think anyone that takes the time to read an open forum knows the date and time. I like announcing the wheres and such in the AvA where a few of us in the past have alerted both sides, the location alt etc. But we are talking about the MA. Its a different breed of cat. I think they have all they need to know. Maybe we'll take 262s as escort :P

Amen.  Don't see that in the first mission, but if FiLtH reaches anywhere close to his original goals eventually, these runs would be able to shut down much of a zone's offensive capability.  Nice way to counter a "horde" in progress.

Arena caps will be the rub.......

Hey 96Delta!  L.C.A. cursing my name in Rook-land yet since I defected?

262's (or even 163's) not a real big concern if we have a decently tight and staggered (vertically and horizontally) box formation.   Massed interlocking fields of fire are a beautiful thing.   A buzzsaw in the sky.  A few escorts will help of course to keep them honest.  Boogie-man always gets the stragglers....

Dedicated gunners spread among the group would be a great idea.... expecially a good positon for new players that are not really up on buff operations.... gives them a ring side seat to observe and take part in the run, without struggling to learn to fly buffs on the run.

If I get the chance, I'll run a couple training flights in the TA or war arena tomorrow night well before launch time for any noobs I find that heard about this already.

If we do indeed up from multiple bases...and just in case we have combat losses...just in case :P    I think we need a few guys ready to fall in and take over. MGD is a squaddie and will be one, Ted, Delta you willing to be other 2?

I like the idea for Friday night.  Get everyone together in a tower, then switch to another base some distance away and off you go, and maybe it will prevent some from camping out at altitude just waiting on the buffs.
Should be fun either way!

Title: Going to try to recruit a gunner
Post by: 4deck on December 07, 2006, 11:50:11 PM
I got a friend of mine that does some gunning with me when im up. I'm gonna ask him tomorrow if he would be down with gunning with me for this flight. He wants to check it out too. I would say that if anyone knows of any gunners, they should ask em, and if so the ones with extra tail people, can run at the end o the line, if enough show up, then back and bottom would be a good place to place em in formation.

Cheers
Floatsup

Easy way to solve that problem is to pick the target AFTER the bombers are airborne. That's how they used to do it on many occasions. They would brief on several targets and once the bombers had launched, command would radio the formation with the target to hit. Filth is the flight lead (I assume) so once formed up, follow his lead and once he points the nose at a target, off you go.

with just me flying, in 2hours i can get city below 40% and 1 strat traget to 55ish...

the main issue is getting the rest of the "country" to relise theres a opertunity there to hurt them.

sure we might get troop factory down to 10% (making resupply about 1h50ish?) but if no one is porking troops whats the point?

2am uk time.... should be there. Bish right?

The plan was to make a nice formation. We succeeded.

Read the threads...everything else was secondary.

Thank you all who joined in the mission. I think we did pretty good. For most of the mission, we had a decent formation. As we figured, when you are trying to keep formation and gun, it eventually breaks down.

Since we didnt really know what we were going to hit before I created the mission, I simply packed on 250lb bombs since the strats were the anticipated target. Then we decided on HQ, and they just werent heavy enough to drop it.

Many of us dropped on MGD's call, and the pattern was right on target.

Special thanks to MGD, Delta, and Tedrbr for taking the lead, high and low sections. To everyone else, excellent work!

We started with 29 B17 elements, and I believe it ended up 30+ by the time we formed up. We had very little escort, but the guys we had were much appreciated. At one point in the film, the formation looked just like the pick that Ted posted of the B17 formation.

We had 1k separation between the sections. After seeing the enemy attacks, I think we could make it 500ft or less and it would further increase the firepower.

We ended up losing quite a few of us, which was expected with such light escort. However, the enemy lost a whole bunch of fighters..and quite a few 163s. The target was hit, and many got home.

Thanks for being patient in the beginning. (I promise to buy a new mic tomorrow)  It takes a little bit of time to get situated. We had no problem finding an arena to move to.

I plan on keeping a record of who attended each time. I like will post a pic showing the crew, and the number of missions flown for each pilot. I'd post kills and rtb/kia status too, but without individual aars its impossible.

Lets plan on a once a month mission for Bomb Wing. Which btw was close to the actual size of a bomb wing used in ww2, tonight.

Keep an eye on the General Discussion forum. Someone feel free to create a tactics thread that we can discuss how to improve our performance, on what we learned tonight. Practice flying real close with squaddies and people you fly with. Try to fit your plane inside your wingmans. Once you can do that and stay together, then flying 100 feet apart seems easy.

Thanks again all. And thanks to the interceptors who made it challenging!

PS the film is pretty cool!  I can't host it though. Or atleast I don't know how to :P

I thought it was VERY successful, it was a lot of fun.  I only wish there were more of these missions that were geared more towards realistic flying.
