The past year and a half I have become extremely interested in learning about survival situations. I guess it started after watching the show "Survivorman", but needless to say, I am hooked. I have taught myself some basics off the internet (fire, filtering water, snares etc...) but I would like to take it to the next level - wilderness survival. Has anyone outside of the military ever experienced a civillian course? Can anyone recommend a school in New England?

Up here in Maine, I think in Rangely, the Navy and maybe even the Army do winter survival stuff out there. I recall the Civil Air Patrol cadets talking about spending a weekend out there during the winter learning survival stuff. It must be good, the gung ho, know it all teens come back pretty humble.
I'll see if I can find out more for you about it.

just buy the macguyver dvd's and you will not only survive, but learn some cool shtuff.

The boy scouts have a lot of info in the official boy scout "field book", but my scout troop went to pendleton for our weekend survival camp so I didn't get a chance to do any non-military "survival training".
On the other hand, the scouting experience I had my whole childhood made USAF survival a heck of a lot more fun. Some of the guys in my group were in a state of near panic the entire 9 days we were in the woods, and as a survival instructor I had to convince more than a few city boys that life in the woods is all good.
I guess my point is to see if the local boy scouts do anything...

when i watch survivorman i think , i learned that stuff in the boy scouts.

Did you have Order of the Arrow in your area? I remember being taken out into the woods, and having a senior scout say "you sleep there". I was completely alone all night. Great experience.

They had order of the arrow, but I think the requirements to get it are different for each region and possibly each troop.
My troop was heavy into outdoor activity and public service... Easy to do in Southern Calif.

We were in So. Cal too. Spent a lot of time in the San Bernardino Mountains. Did you ever do the 9 Peaks Trail?

Fascinating, but, here's a question:
How are you gonna survive outside the reach of a wireless internet connection?

i was in the civil air patrol for a few years and there is a place called hawk mountain it is a search and rescue school but they also teach survivel it being a major part of search and rescue i belive the web page is hawkmountain.com but not sure

Never had wireless internet so it shouldn't be a problem =).
And I never did cub/boy scouts as a kid. I was always occupied with football, soccer and baseball from first steps to the end of high school.
As a pilot who regularly flies North during the winter and an avid skiier, I think a basic course would be very benifical, just in case.

I think we did part of the 9 peaks, but I don't really remember. Too long ago, too many beers in between then and now :)

Todays youth is so candyassed they watermelon twinkies.
I've been passing onto my 8 year old Son the stuff that I've learned not only in Scouts but Airbourne Recon stuff. He's short and small but he can take out bigger kids... Taught him joint breaking technics, pressure points, silent movements and soon cover/concealment, rifles, scopes and round trajectories.
Plus how to romance the girls.
No Fear He wants to become a Fighter Pilot.
He'll do just fine in this World.
