Title: Best/Funniest Christmas memory?
Post by: DiabloTX on December 08, 2006, 07:03:33 PM
There are a bunch for me to choose from but this is the one that I always relate when asked.

Christmas, 1982.  Earlier that summer Mattel released the Intellivoice voice synthesis module for it's core Intellivision game.  One of the first games released for the Intellivoice is "B-17 Bomber".  To say I was jonesing for that game would be like saying a crack addict likes to get high occaisionally.  At school, it's all I dreamt of.  I mean, think about it.  I could take my virtual B-17 out on missions, shoot down 109's, and bomb the hell outta whatever I felt like while having to manage the airplane's fuel and bomb load AND navigation AND piloting AND...ah, you get my point.

About 2 weeks before the big morning I was bound and determined that I had to play that game before the big day arrived.  Snooping around the Christmas tree one night, well after the parental units had gone to bed, I realised that one of my presents was in the exact shape and size for the game I so longed to play.  My mind went racing.  I couldn't just tear into it as much as I'd like to, the parents would see that.  Think, think, think....

OH YES!  In the garage, in the tool shop, second drawer on the right: Xacto blades!!!!  Yes, I was in business!!  I went out and got an unused blade (he'd never miss an unused blade, his xacto knife being gone would be noticed in 5 seconds) and took it upstairs with my present.  Slowly, carefully, hands shaking, I sliced the cellophane tape that kept the paper wrapping around my present.  I made only 2 cuts on the end, peeled back the paper, opened one end of the box and...out slipped the cartridge and gamepad overlays.  Holy**** I thought to myself.  Every night from then on until Christmas morning I played that game til my eyes couldn't stay open.  It was pure bliss, joy as it supposed to be.

The morning of Christmas of course I acted excited and happy as one could fake.  I came down the stairs, everyone gathering around the living room, I scan my loot...and my little present is not there.  After opening all my presents and not finding it, a small frown came upon my face to which my father asked me if everything was ok.  I said no, the one thing that I wanted is not here.  He then told me that everything was under the tree and there is nothing left.  After a few minutes of watching me pout he pulls out from behind him the little present, pointed to the excessive tape on one end from me reclosing it after every night and told me if I ever did that again my Christmas's from here on out would be much less joyful.

:D

Hehe I think most of us have done that Diablo, I don't think there's ever been a present I really really wanted, just things I kinda sorta wanted and were nice to have.  My mom shops all year so a Christmas list of anything semi pricey is an almost sure bet not to get it unless it's from dad.  The Christmas I remember most was when i was about 5 or 6, unwrapping a 5 foot tall polar bear(I was in the range of 4 feet at the time), bean bag chairs for my sister and myself, k'nex, and a very large Lego racing play set, and tons of other things.  I remember sitting on my beanbag chair watching Apollo 13 with my grandpa and dad, building everything in the instruction book out of k'nex.  Ah yes the days that Santa brought all the presents, good times.

I'd have to say though, you can't beat watching a little kid's face light up on Christmas morning.

well, being that my bday is dec 20th, i always got lots of medium to small gifts but always got one big one for my bday and christmas together..i guess that was my parents way of apologizing for celebrating my bday on christmas...anyways, 1989 christmas came, i seen the many small/medium gifts under the tree but didnt see anything that i would concider " big " under there, i remember wakin up many many times christmas eve night thinkin that my parents were makin sure i didnt see it cuz i was known for doin almost what diablo did but i learned to undo the tape without messin up the paper..hehe..anyways...wakin up many times i didnt see anything different, so christmas morning came, i went runnin into the living room and still....nothing different...i was sad...opened all my gifts and they were nice of course but nothing special, i always got cool stuff and nothing special still. my older brother got a new rifle and crap...but nothing big for me :(
so then my dad says, i need phillip screwdriver out of the garage, can u go get it, i didnt want to..cuz first of all i live in michigan its cold out, but also cuz i was bummed out...so, slowly i make my way out to the garage, i open the door and OMG!!!!!!!!!!! YAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! THERE WAS MY BIG GIFT....right in front of me was a brand new quad...yamaha 250..bright yellow....with big red ribbon around it....i ran back in the house excited and as i came thru the door, my mom stood in front of me with a brand new yellow helmet and yellow matching riding outfit ( yellow my fav color ) i screamed and hollar'd and called my cousins, they too had got new quads, so we all geared up and away we went...i was 14 and sooooooo excited...that was best christmas for me.

At was a cold and snowy christmas eve, Chicago, 1991.  My entire family was heading to XYZ to spend Christmas with the inlaws....Somehow I boarded the wrong flight, ended up in NYC, and used a "talkboy" to book a room at the Plaza hotel...The rest is history.  I believe they even made a movie about my experience.

One of my favorite Christmas stories is one that Daddog told about one Christmas when his whole extended family sat down for a big turkey dinner and one of the older people suddenly began having chest pains, I think it was.  Everyone left and went to the hospital leaving the little pet yip yap dog behind.

Fortunately, there was a good outcome at the hospital, and they all returned home to thier turkey dinner to find that while they were gone, the little dog had eaten his fill of roast turkey right off the table.  The little guy was so full according to Daddog that when they came into the house he was laying on his side panting on the floor and couldn't get up.  All the poor little guy could do was lay there and wag his tail ...

No funny stories to tell, all my Christmas's were uneventful for the most part.

My earliest recollections of gifts for Christmas were an Erector Set, and GI Joe action figure, circa 1964.

I remember my sisters buying a gift and wrapping it, placing it under the tree. I "peeked" and saw it was one of my favorite "gag" gifts, invisible ink that you'd accidently spray on somone, and it would disappear...I felt so guilty for discovering what that present was, I hammed it up on Christmas day feeling like an actor more than a brother. :(  Never peeked  at another xmas present again! :aok

This thread provoked me to post some old christmas photos, including Dad assembling that Erector Set for his young 4 year old son! ;)  These are taken at various Christmas's.

That's the kind of advice that's never needed Dred, sorta like "Take the car out of Park gear in order to put it in Drive gear".

Nice pics Rip.  Not everyone would be brave enough to dig into the past and post it here.

Say, are those toys made of real metal and painted with lead-based paint?

Ahhhhh...the good ole days.

And definitely don't use styrofoam cups...plastic ones are much better!

I don't know if it's my favorite memories or not, but a few years ago, I was going to LA to see my wife and met up with her at her office Christmas party.

I was suffering from the cross country flight, and on the plane I was told that if I took off my shoes and scrunched the carpet with my toes, it would help with the jet lag.  So there I was, scrunching my toes in one of the offices, a Christmas party happening next door, when all of the sudden automatic weapons fire and shouts in German above the screams of the party goers...  well as a New York cop, I sprang into action....

When I was in the 6th grade I got Monogram’s 1/48th scale: B-17, B-24 & B-29.  I also got a Cox gas control line P-51 and some other planes.  My entire wish list was model airplanes; that’s all I asked for and that was all I got.

We sat down for our turkey dinner and when Dad went to slice it, it let out a burst of steam and collapsed into a heap of overdone crust. Then our Uncles dog started gacking on a bone, and the cat started the tree on fire by biting through the wires.

  Was crazy!

Actually I have a pretty good Christmas memory every year.

I have Christmas Eve at my house where all the family comes over.
At some point we get all my kids little neices & nephews, couple grand nephews, and whatever other kids may be in attendance around and I read them "The Night Before Christmas" out of the very same book that it was read to me when I was little some 30+ years ago.

My mother saved it and when I had a child of my own she gave it to me as a Christmas Gift

Now I read it to all the kids.

Sometimes even the not so little kids will gather round for it.

I figure the faces will change but I'll be doing it for the next 30 years or so.

Also figure that at the rate my beard is turning gray.
I will very much look the part long before then LOL

Last year my kids got bags of coal and letters of reprimand from Santa, I kid you not.  They had been awful and were getting worse: talking back, not doing chores, not cleaning up, fighting, etc.  If you tell them you’re going to write to Santa if they don’t shape up, you have to follow through.  This year/season they have been fantastic, and we’ve had a good chunk of our Christmas shopping done 14 months ahead.
