Title: Editing the MBR... (gasp!)
Post by: OOZ662 on December 09, 2006, 03:11:29 PM
Well, after a whole lot of screwing up, I ended up with a computer that has one copy of Windows and two copies to choose from upon boot. I suspect that means that there are two entries in the MBR. They're both from the same Windows CD, so I wouldn't know how to tell them apart when editing the MBR.

*One Windows installed, working properly
*Waiting 30 sec or having to wait for it to ask for your choice = pain
*Want to edited the MBR (or whatever needs to be) so that it just goes straight to the working Windows
*Don't have any tools except Hiram's Boot CD and have no idea how to work an MBR editor; I'd like to learn.

DO NOT EDIT THE MBR.

Your problem is not linked to the mbr but more to the boot.ini file having 2 entries ....

I'll ad d more info tomorrow .

but meanwhile : DO NOT EDIT THE MBR.

It's not the MBR, it's the file BOOT.INI.  Make a copy.  Then edit BOOT.INI as an administrator and get rid of the line that you don't want to see any more.  Make sure it's the right one, or you'll be playing games with safe mode and who knows what else.

The only difference I see between the two lines is one is rdisk(0) and the other rdisk(1). Are they listed in the same order they are on the thing where you select one? If so, I can fix this in a second.

rdisk(0) is typically C:

rdisk(1) is typically D:

Well, seeing as D: is my "files and crap" drive, that must be the nonexistant one. I hope. :D

Leave both entries there and put the delay time to 1 sec. No need to remove one if it already defaults to the right one.

BTW the default is also listed i think so you can see which is the right one.

Neg, they were both exactly the same entry with only the above mentioned difference. The second one was the bluff, so it's all fine and dandy now.
