how do i set an avatar.

Hit the USER_CP button in the upper right corner of the Forums.

Under EDIT OPTIONS tab, all at the bottom you can change your avatar (upload your own or use one of the default ones).

An avatar needs to be a picture file (jpg or gif), 64x64 pixels maximum size and a max of 30KB filesize. Animated gifs possible.
