It's pretty simple. Please just post here if you fly the Lockheed P-38 exclusively or almost exclusively. I'd just like to know who all of the Lightning fliers are.
-
If I'm in the EWA or MWA, this is all I fly. I'll also fly it in the LWA's to just turnfight. Good plane, best of the bunch IMO.
-
38J and G
-
I think you'll be hard pressed to find any plane that I've flown other than the P-38 in 10+ years.

Lightning eh?
never heard of it....

G J L prettiest plane in the air. I married mine about 2 years and never looked back athough shes cheated on me with guppe and silat to name a few I still love her.

P-38 is my first love.
The problem is that if I start flying other planes or running around in GV's, I lose my touch. This tour, I'm off GV's and just flying P-38's.
I like them all, but you can't beat the J model especially with olive drab skin.
More skins!
-
Most of the time unless there's a squadron type thing going on.
-
Unless I'm taking off of a CV or in a mission, I'll be in a P-38J.
-
Not yet Slash, workin on it.:D
-
Main ride unless getting kinda bored and take a perk plane up for a ride for a change.
How can you not fly something with 2 engines.

Wait. You - married - my lady? We're going to have to fight over this, you know.
Ack-Ack, what is your identification in the game?

It's currently "Aerial," although I am trying to get it changed to "Aetherius" due to all the "Little Mermaid" crap I get. The reason why you don't see any statistics in current tours is because I'm doing the freebie thing. I simply cannot afford paying for anything to do with entertainment right now. If you really want to see my statistics, look at Tour 80; that was my two week trial. Oh, and I was, uh, strafed a lot.
I'm actually looking for good P-38 and Me-109 pilots for some friendly duels in my eight player server, Blue Sky: Maximum Realism. I had hand surgury about two months ago, and now that I'm up to 100% efficiency for the first time in years, I'm eager to fly. Unfortunately, I've been having a terrible time dragging any of the "famous" P-38 pilots from the main arena. I can't say I blame them; though lag-free and using realistic settings, my server is not exactly glamorous.

Yep, the Butcher Bird is really sweet when it explodes into a nice and pretty fireball. Of course if you can find one that isn't running fast enough to shoot down.

fly 38's everywhere. into horde, outta horde, into trees, into water, and land in-between:) once in awhile i'll up a spitV, a6, ki, 109, just because they are fun as well, in a different way.
-
I fly it a lot.
I'm not very good in it though.
I suck in it actually.
I suck in everything actually. :(
-
90% of the time that is my ride and it is what I do best in, but I don't consider myself one of the better P-38 sticks. Just don't get enough time online.
-
I used to fly the 38G VERY often and got pretty good in it, buit latley I've been upping some spits and such just for a change of pace and quick base defense. I'll be back in the 38 soon though. Only one I fly really is the G.
-
Ive tried to fly it on occasion.
-
i LOVE the 38, but being a noob i'm still dealing with this HUGE learning curve.
-
I fly the 38 when I want to do a buff run. I wish HT would lets us have formations of 38's for level bombing.

I thought it was a bomber, though? I mean comeon, it has two engines. Anything that has two engines has to be a bomber... why no formation??
:huh :cry

P38G
Is there anything else? :)
-
I would fly the G a lot if not for that horrid armor glass. I dont know if its just the way I fly, but when I reverse and set up for one of those really close snapshots as they pass in front of you, its EXACTLY where I naturally set the enemy plane up for the shot. I want to like the G but I can not come to terms with that awful glass.

I don't even notice it anymore. It's interesting that when i get in an L or a J the view bothers me cause I'm used to the G. Just took time i guess.
And I like those snapshots you refer to :)

I got absolutely Murdred tonight. It was a blast! I hope to see more of you guys in Blue Sky: Maximum Realism.

Well I'm still a noob at this game, but I've always liked the p-38. I've been flying it, pretty much exclusively with the occasional P51 run. However the more I fly the p-38 the less I want to fly anything else.
My only complaint about the P-38's is the engines seem to get knocked out very easily.
-
Is this for the P-38 therapy group..... Yes my name is Ledpig and i fly the P-38 Lightning almost exclusively . (cries):cry I have a problem, i ask all you lovely people to forgive me, sometimes i cheat with the F-4u Corsair (cries) :cry :cry
Ledpig < ==== sinks back into addiction......:(

When i started this game i sought out the best pilots in the game and tried to duel with them, They killed me everytime, but you know what, i learned something now i don't get killed so much and have more fun. I wish more noobs would do this, they might have more fun in the end too. A wise man once said: Getting killed is the easiest way to learn
P.S. I still suck :)

Crap Sugarland, Tx, that's like 30 miles from me? I'm from Houston. Oh and i'm 28 so i think everyones old, though i'm narrowing (gasp) on "maturity" myself :( :cry

Well you've got me beat, old timer.
-
I do, because it requries less trim and I like having two engines. I can survive onone.
Also, I like its high alt performance :)

But also be advised. I have now idea what I am taling about :D
I also have very many wierd thoughts about this game :noid :noid

That is not natural.

I took a break from the P-38 early this year early this year, and then took a break from the game completely for a while. I've only recently started flying the arenas again, and have only a few hops in the P-38, as I am really rusty, and never was that good to begin with. If the racing schedule allows (I'm swamped with engines to build) I'll try to get some more time, and I'm going to head to the TA for some serious refresher courses. I know some of my P-38 buddies would like nothing more than to give me a really good thrashing for hours on end.
-
I'm just east of Houston myself...

There may be a slight technicality involving any possible initiation of Clerick... See Section 12 Item 9 Paragraph 2 of the SAPP Indoctrination Procedures Manual. That in itself is a minimal requirement and we have no idea of his past with sheep.

There's been a lot of reports of missing sheep in the Rochester area. That might be an indication.

So what can you all tell me about the P-38's best climb speed and angle? The Pilots Manual has a chart for various weights, altitudes, and power settings, but I'm not sure if the Aces High II P-38 has the same climbing ability as the real P-38.
Back in Pacific Fighters (terrible game), I discovered that the P-38L's best climb speed was about 180 M.P.H. However, the P-38 in Aces High is somewhat different. In Aces High, I estimate that with a light P-38L my best climb speed is about 175 M.P.H. But I'm unable to outclimb, long-term, the better Zeke fliers (they always end up far behind me but slightly above me), so I know I must be doing something wrong. Should I be climbing slower, or what?
I have the same sort of problem with my zoom climb. In Pacific Fighters, I determined that my best climb angle was the same angle that my ship was at when I was climbing at best climb speed - somewhere around twenty degrees. But again, in Aces High this "feels" too shallow, and doesn't get me above ships like the Hurricane and the Zeke - ships that I should be able to outclimb. What am I doing wrong?
-
Sounds to me like you are describing a typical climb meant for long term altitude gain. In this area fighters such as 109s perform much better. When people say the P38 has a great climbing ability, it is typically meant vertical ability to hang on its prop. Here is where you will see it's true advantages. It has no torque, and two powerful engines, which allow it to stay in a nose up position longer and under better control than most single engine fighters.
-
Right. In the game I came from, the long-term climb was the only way to outclimb ships such as the Zeke. If you both started on the deck at equal energy states, by keeping your angle shallow you would eventually end up about a thousand feet higher than him by the time you almost lost sight of him behind you. A combat turn or a Immelmann would then let you reverse and re-engage with a 1,000 foot altitude advantage.
In Aces High, however, this doesn't appear to work. It seems that either the Zeke climbs better than the Zeke in Pacific Fighters, or I'm doing something wrong. Should I be able to out-climb, long term, a Zeke if we start out with equal energy states? I'm not talking about the steep hammerhead rope trick.
Here's the picture I used for my P-38 lessons (don't laugh, I really was "the P-38 man" in Pacific Fighters, mostly because no one flew it). The drawing is not at all to scale.
-
You wont necessarily outclimb it long term. It will be around the same actual climb, but the P38 will be going faster so will gain seperation in the long run. At higher altitudes a P38 should outclimb a zero like you're talking about.
Also depends on which zeke you are talking about
-
Hmmm ... in Pacific Fighters, the higher you got the harder it got to do this maneuver. I told my "students" to try to drag the Zeke down to the deck, turn a few circles with him to blow his energy, then go to step one in the picture.
I tried this with a very good Zeke pilot in Aces High the other day, and although I went all the way up to 20,000 feet he stayed with me (although, as you said, horizontal seperation increased). I finally gave up and started close-in dogfighting with him.
-
Diving to the deck isn't a bad idea, the P38 can retain E better than the zero and would be able to regain more alt than the zero. That is of course, assuming the zero followed you all the way down.
-
Care for a few friendly fights?
-
sure
-
Excellent! Check the eight player servers for Blue Sky: Maximum Realism. I'm throwing it up right now.
[edit]And a fine time we had in the sky! Though we never did get around to the Zeke versus Lightning stuff. I was having too much fun. That was some excellent flying, Raptor. If ever you get a joystick, I don't know what I'll do. You'll be able to knock me down with one hand tied behind your back - literally. You know, there's a good reason real airplanes have a stick or yoke and not a mouse. I salute you, sir![/edit]
-
If you're following this thread, you've probably seen this. But in the case that you have not, it would be a great shame for you to miss this. I've watched it many times and it never fails to bring me great joy.
http://p38whitelightnin.com/gallery/vid/LEFTY-384K.WMV
As you watch the beautiful display Lefty put on for us, remember that he risked his life in a B-17 a little over sixty years ago. It was his generation of Americans (and you Brits, Ozzies, Canucks, and the rest) who are responsible for us being able to do what we do. I have a hunch that if they were as complacent as my generation is, we would not be able to own computers because they cost many Reichmarks. And that would probably be the least of our worries. Salute, Lefty, and thank you.
