or rather Z key zoom works sometimes and sometimes not... any hints are appreciated.

The Z key is the toggle. The "[" and "]" keys do the zooming in and out after you toggle with Z. If the Z key isn't toggling the zoom then I can only suggest your keyboard is at fault, not the game.

when I hit Z, the gunsight (or whatever im looking at)magnifies 10 or so times bigger... the [ and ] keys only work in outside views .. what Im after is a way to get "closer" to the sight IOW magnify the target so I can see more detail . Hope Im saying this right.

From F1 (cockpit view) use the head forward/backward motion to "zoom" further then gun zoom. That would be the arrow up/down keys by default.



One side note id like to add to zooming in this far: Make sure you dont loose track of the rest of the world (ie your SA - situational awareness). Target fixation can get you killled quick.
