Title: Great Heisman Ripoff
Post by: Choocha on December 14, 2006, 07:46:12 PM
College football is a complete fraud.  We all know that.  With the BCS doo doo, and confrences like the Big 10, which are inferior, play less games, but still get the #1 spot and the heisman.

Look at this kid from Arkansas and tell me he shouldln't win the heisman:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FCfZoPGEFA

He's doing that against top 10 opponents....in the best conference BY FAR.

good one,

check out the rutgers boys and count the hurdles.

Ray rice is a sophmore, and will be a serious heisman contender.

Some very nice playing there.

Im with doobs. But there is a bit of prejudiced there as well. ;)

Remember the Name Brian Leonerd and hope your team takes him.
Damn good back and TEAM player.
Not to mention a real class act

He'll go on the first day of the draft. the only question is to whom

Half of all the All-America picks came from the Big-10, that means the other half came from all the other conferences combined. And the Big-10 is inferior? You'll see how "inferior" the Big-10 is to the SEC come January. Heck, I'd bet on Michigan to beat Florida and they're the Big-10 runner-up.

OH and BTW Troy Smith pwn joo all!1!1!111111!:O

McFadden is................

fast :)

He is outrunning the fastest defensive players on some of the fastest teams around. But again, he is only a sophmore.   Next years race should be interesting.

Oh and Dace, The top 2 teams in the country may very well be OSU and Mich.   And obviously Wisconsin is very good, but the rest of the Big10 is not.  Top to bottom, the SEC is a nightmare.  The best SEC team may be LSU and they lost 2 games in the conference.  The toughest defense against us this year was Ol' Miss, they held McFadden down most all day.  And they are possibly the worst of the SEC teams this year.  No one strolls through the line like that against these kinds of fast defenses and takes it to the house that much, its crazy!  I mean theres a play like that in nearly every game Arkansas played.

USC and Mississippi are the only 2 games I can think of that he didn't bust out in one way or another.  And he was only about 75% against USC.  The key is blocking though, as has already been mentioned.  The O-line has been awesome this year, and the fullback is a converted tailback, and PO'ed about it...defenders pay the price for that. :)

Smith getting the Heisman was just a formality IMO.  As long as OSU kept winning the award was his to lose.

Dace,

What a joke that is. Please tell me you did not think that Charles Woodson who won the Heisman over Peyton Manning was a better player????

The reasons that the Big 10, Pac 10 and ACC gets more publicity is the tie in with ESPN and ABC. Along with the fact that the higher density population centers are in those three conferences and they have more votes in all the polls and in the Heisman voting. Those are the only reasons.

Big Ten is inferior.

Give me a break.  Somebody sounds jealous.

Wait until January 8 and say that.

How does an inferior conference have 2 of the top 3 teams in the country (3 in the top 7)?

When Michigan stomps USC and my beloved Ohio State Buckeyes spank the over-rated Gators, you will change your mind.

Don't get me wrong, McFadden is an amazing football player.  But lets be realistic, he is only a sophmore.

Lets not forget that the Buckeyes now have 7 Heisman trophys (tied for most ever), plus the only 2-time winner.  I guess that means we have been inferior for quite some time.

The Big10 had its day, no doubt.  Say during the 50's, 60's and 70's.  The game has changed and evolved.

That said, OSU and U of M are awsome programs.  No doubt.  They both could win the SEC.  I'm talking about the other 8-9 teams in your conference.

Just sorry.  Wisconsin is above average then the rest just suck bad.

The Big10 is really just the Big2.

3 good teams do not make a monster conference.  Try running in a conference with 12 good teams and see how well you sleep at night.

The BIGTEN plays good football.  OSU should beat Florida, if they dont we should never hear about how great the BIGTEN is again, forevermore ;)  Just a joke, I love these debates. :) (I'll take Florida and the 8 1/2 points in this one!)

I'm taking USC and the points over Michi-cant.  Dont really care either way though.

Arkansas can beat Wisconsin, question is: will they?  We got a bad record in bowls for some reason.  I thinm its because we travel so well, that we get into bigger bowls than we rate.  This year, we rated the bowl we got and I expect it to be a whale of a game.  I'm picking............um yeah, Arkansas!

I'll take Tennessee over Penn State too.

Theres 3 SEC vs BIGTEN matchups that should see a 2 - 1 advantage for the SEC.

Agreed, I love these debates.  Great lockeroom banter.

Some valid points about top-bottom quality.

Wisconsin is decent this year but not great.

No doubt the top of the Big Ten is awesome, unfortunately this year we do have some lower quality teams.

However, most arguments I hear about the depth of the SEC are flawed since they just beat up on each other and use those wins to further their strength of schedule argument.

When the top SEC teams start playing top programs around the country at the beginning of the year, they will get more respect.

Consider the fact that Michigan plays ND just about every year.

OSU has played Texas the last two years, at Washington next year, at USC in 2008, USC at home in 2009, and in Columbus vs Miami (FL) in 2010.

Playing and winning versus quality competition outside your conference makes the program better.

Troy deserved to win this year, mcfadden is in the running 2007.

OSU and Mich will destroy their opponents come January. Michigan especially is pissed off, and has something to prove. they'll win by at least 4 touchdowns.

Post by: BlkKnit on December 15, 2006, 11:45:35 AM
good points about out of conference schedules, but that knife cuts both ways.  The Big Ten must go outside for good competition ;)

Arkansas played (and beat) Texas at Texas in 2003, lost to them by 2 in Arkansas because of a bonehead fumble near the end in 2004.  Got clobbered by USC in 2005 and 2006, but the 2006 game, man, love to have another shot at that one.

Its the SW Missouri States that kill strength of schedule, mid-majors would fit the bill well enough and not hurt SOC so bad.

That type of scedule is typical in the SEC but better at many of the schools each year:
Georgia vs G Tech
Fla vs Fl State
South Carolina vs Clemson

BlkKnit,

Good point about "must" go out of conference for competition.  Never thought of it that way.

Hard to believe that I didn't see it that way-not.

I guess all that Scarlet and Gray blood running thru my system has skewed my objectivity-;)

haha...I really meant that as a joke, everyone should have to go out of conference against a good opponent IMHO.

Anyway, just realized, Arkansas has lost to a Nat Champ game participant for 3 out of last 4 years (I think I have that right).  Thats almost as good as kissin yer sister. :p   Maybe Michigan shoulda played Arkansas, then they might have gotten in. :huh

When he can't function anymore.  Ninety percent of the coaches in the college community don't amount to a third of the man that Paterno is.  Combined.

The biggest hit he took wasn't from getting old, but a helmet from a 300 pound player.  Something that would have blown any of our knees out.  Yet before that, he'd still run out on the field and scream in the ref's face.

For God Sakes Michigan puts freaking lights in your stadium.  Its not 1920 anymore.

Big10 was great when they had leather helmets (I think Joe P was in his mid 50's then).

That was cool, I like the one with the hurdle in it better.

But, to answer your question, yes, he can get the tough yards.  Did you see the play against Auburn where he stiff armed a guy who flew back about 10 feet?  Many of his most impressive plays are only 5 to 10 yards, but I figure thats true of any top back at this level.

McFadden was injured coming into the game against Wisconsin....a sprained ankle...and then injured his shoulder during the course of the game.  As evidence, on his single long run in the first quarter he was caught from behind, which hasn't happened all season.

Bye the way, who bribed the refs? :D

And I would certainly like another look at the call on the "missed" field goal...preferably one from behind the end zone looking toward the field....cause from the original camera angle that kick looked good.

Also, Arkansas doubled Wisconsin's offensive yardage, even tho they played with only ten men in their offensive lineup for the entire game.

Actually, this was one of the best matchups of the bowl season, and one of the best defensive struggles I've seen all season.

Hey Musty,

Let me help you, turn the sound off and play your own music instead.  Mcfadden is the best back in the SEC since Bo Jackson.  Not my words, ESPN said that.  He was hurt in the bowl game.  Arkansas's best full back was also not there because of an injury.

such things are a bit skewed Sox.....just like my opinions ;)

I find that pretty funny, the Big Least is the top conference in the country?

Underdogs win too many bowl games, counting bowl games to judge the best conference just doesn't do it for me.

You gonna tell me Boise State is better than OU?  For 1 game, yes, but lets see the results if they played 10 times.  My money is on OU for at least 8 wins (I might even go 9)

In my not so impartial opinion Arkansas was better than Wisconsin, but maybe Wisconsin had an off day.  I know Arkansas beat themselves in several ways.

As for the SEC, I'd probably say LSU is the best team (or most talented anyway) with 2 tough losses that should not have happened.  I'd also say that Florida may not be better than Arkansas, they lost to Auburn, but I'd still put them higher.
So, if I was ranking the SEC:
1.  LSU: lost to Fla and Auburn, I still haven't figured out why.
2T.  Arkansas: Lost a tough one to LSU and shoulda beat Fla  WIll have very high expectations next year, if they live up to them could see them in nat'l title hunt, if not will have some disgruntled fans.  Very likely will finish with 9+ wins and NOT win SEC west.
2T.  Florida: Lost to Auburn, got some breaks, awesome defensive speed, offense looks spotty.  I just dont see how they are 2nd best team in the nation, but the record is 12-1, so they are.
4.  Auburn:  Over rated?  maybe, lots of talent, need better O-line and RB's.  Needs more on field leadership.
5T.  Georgia:  This team is better than thier record, should have contended for SEC east crown.  Probably will next year.
5T.  Tennessee:  Not as good as thier record IMO
7.  Kentucky:  Not sure about this team, maybe as good as Tenn. and Georgia but lacks respect as a contender
8.  South Carolina:  Another team that could have done better. Will be a contender almost every year, but may not ever win the east.
9.  Alabama:  aaaahahahaHAAAHAHAHAaaaahahah ahahahaha
10.  Vanderbilt: On the rise, but can they stay there?  In position to be looking for a bowl berth every year and to actually be legitimately disappointed if they dont make it.
11.  Ol' Miss:Fired a good head coach a couple of years ago, dunno what these people have against themselves lol
12.  Mississippi State:  Just aweful lately, but they'll be back

Take all this for what its worth.....nothing, but its fun to mull over and argue about.
