Title: What's Your Fun Gun?
Post by: Halo on December 16, 2006, 01:02:10 PM
We've had many gun threads that have touched on favorite this or that, but maybe not this variation:  What is your favorite fun gun and why?

Not necessarily the biggest or baddest or cutest or teeniest, just the one gun you have the most fun with, every time, guaranteed -- the gun that brings a grin to your face, the one that never lets you down or disappoints you, the one that feels so right it's like a good friend.

My fun gun is the Ruger Single Six I just bought.  Had its granddaddy forever; this is the grandson with both .22 and .22 WMR cylinders.

The .22 cylinder will fire any size or type .22 cartridge -- no fuss, no bother, interchangeably if you prefer.

Especially with the 4 5/8-inch barrel, it's exquisitely balanced.  Feels as if it has always been in my hand.  Ultra safe with the new Ruger mechanism that allows six rounds to be carried, and even no-damage dry firing -- unusual for any rimfire gun.

The single action Single Six is utterly predictable and reliable.  Does exactly what you expect every time.  The hammer has two positions: down ("all the way forward") or cocked.  Nothing in between.  No intricate safeties challenging the shooter.

"The loading gate can be opened only when the hammer and trigger are fully forward.  Opening the gate immobilizes the trigger, hammer, and transfer bar" (unique trigger safety mechanism).

No fancy sights.  Rear sight adjustable with a pen knife screwdriver.

No feeding problems; no ejection problems -- the manual long rod WILL eject anything.

No need for after market products like different handles, sights, mechanisms, or other embellishments.  Nothing improves this original design.

Easy and convenient to carry in the field or tote to the range.  Inexpensive to fire all day with any size .22 you want.  Quite a bit more lethal with the .22 Magnum cylinder, although each magnum shot is four times as expensive as a .22 LR.

Challenging to hit something at any distance, but accurate enough to do some game or dissuade an aggressor.  Shoot dime-size targets at home defense 7-yard distances, or try for silver dollar-size targets at 25 yards.  If you can hit consisently with the 4 5/8" barrel, you can do well with most other guns too.

Feels just right in any situation: admiring it, firing it, loading it, ejecting shells, carrying it, cleaning it.  Probably more like a pet than any other gun.

Doesn't need anything extra ever except a nice leather holster so it can rest in style between outings.  Who, me, anthropomorphize a gun?  Well, yeah, maybe this one.  If I were into gun naming, I'd probably call this one Trusty.

I bought a SW 41 and put a old c-more on it just for fun. Man i have a really good time shooting it at the steal range. What i really like is i can buy a brick of .22 for $8 and i dont need to spend 3 hours reloading to shoot the next day. Its crazy that it will shoot better then my sti at 30 yards. Fun gun and its a very pretty and well crafted gun just looking at it.

Think i am going to purchase a custom 10/22 our build one. I am really getting back into the .22's just for the fun of shooting. I have six long guns in .22 but i think that a short 10/22 with a red dot could be fun for bowling pins and the steal range.

Definately build an ultimate 10/22 don't buy one.  It's such an easy design to work with.  1 bolt holds the stock to the action.  In fact I'd say the 10/22 is easily my favorite/most reliable/most used gun I have.  I can't give a gun more accolades than to say It would be my main gun WHEN the Zombies arrive.

Can I pick three????

In this order....

1)  Springfield M1903-A3------tack driving .30-06
2)  Winchester 120 12ga-----my first and still favorite shotgun, action is smooth as silk
3)  M1 Carbine----------Fun and accurate for "higher power" plinking!!

I would also have to say my Ruger 10/22. I have more parts and add ons laying around for that thing I had to get a new oversized hard case for everything. I have 4 different stocks (standard walnut, Droganov Sniper, Bullpup coversion, and a really nice thumbhole laminate with oversized glass bedded barrel channel), almost 2 dozen mags, a bi-pod, tactical lazer, reflex sight, 4X scope, rail system, flash hider, mussle break, spare heavy barrel, extended bolt handle, extended mag release lever, and the list goes on.

Depending on what I want to do with it I can configure it anyway I want in just a matter of minutes. I can make it look like a standard 10/22 out of the box or turn it into a full blown target race rifle on a whim.

If i were to buy one i would buy a custom one with all the goodies. Was looking around and i think i could get a nice custom job for around $400. Its always nice to build one but its cheaper just to buy a gun someone shot 500 times and is looking to fund a new gun project. Good thing with the .22s are that you cant shoot out the barrel and their pertty bullet proof.

My family bought a ranch and we are having the fence guys make us a shooting range after they complete the high fence. Took a trip out their to work and flaged off the area for 5 foot burms on the side and a 8 foot back stop. I think its going to be nice but its going to be interesting what targets i am going to make. Think i am going to go all steal and i have a good friend that makes custom gates and iron work for a living. He has a complete shop and all i would need to buy is the steal. Always dreamed of a really nice covered range and its going to happen this spring.

I probaby have most fun with my shotgun shooting clay pigeons, but after that there is nothing more fun than plinking with the .22 rifle.

All guns are fun, I used to compete in bowling pin matches with a .45 and .22 pistols, with a bunch of guy I work with.  That was a blast too.  Did it some with a .44 magnum, that was fun just to watch the pins fly when hit.

Interesting many prefer the M1 Carbine and Ruger 10/22 -- similar design, something very nice about the way they feel and handle.

Marlin .22 rifle is the one that gets the most use.

When I'm in KC with the TAS guys it's my OU shotgun because we have a great afternoon blasting clays out of the air.

For a big gun, I like shooting my Garand.

My two all-purpose, light-weight, easy to shoot weapons are a Rossi SRS 92 (Winchester 1892 clone) chambered in .357 mag w/16" barrel and a Marlin Camp9 with six 20 round mags.

Both are outstanding "house" guns.

The Rossi 92 weighs 5.5 lb loaded, while the Marlin is about the same weight and size as the Ruger 10/22, but being chambered in 9mm, it offers decent knock down power (I load Winchester SilverTips or Remington Golden Sabre +P). Likewise, I prefer SilverTips in the Rossi as exposed lead HPs will distort when left in the tube mag for more than a few hours.

Both rifles are great for an afternoon of plinking.

My regards,

Widewing

depends on mood.   the gun must be an accurate example of the breed tho and be dependable.   I like a gun with some heft to it and made of metal.   If it is finished nicely and machined well those add to the experiance.

For a plinking rifle I like the .223 class like the mini 14 or ar15 family.

For longer range and more fun I like the bolt action battle rifles and the old Garand.

Handguns... most are fun.   don't much like the plastic ones tho.

Dont have one anymore but I'd go with a 45 LC Colt Single Action Army copy (Uberti anyone?).  Of course an original Colt would be best if you can afford one.

.75 caliber Brown Bess Flintlock Musket (replica). A 10 pound monster with a 42 inch barrel. A lot of noise, a lot of smoke, and about 2 ounces of lead with each shot.

I'm sorry guys.  It sounds pathetic, but my recent fun gun of the last 6 months is my Winchester 1000xs pellet rifle.  haven't chronoed it but its advertised at 1000 fps. its a .177 pellet.  If you live in an urban environment,  you need one of these.  with a 4x scope you will take names at 25 - 50 yards.  racoons, squirrels, rabbits.  I use everything I kill.

Your pellet gun can kill a raccoon?  Either my pellet gun isn't as good as yours, or we have huge raccoons.  I'm leaning towards the latter...

I think i had the same rifle. Is the trigger something like 10lbs, i bought one for the house and then returned it after the first time i pulled the trigger. I hope they fixed the trigger because it was a nice rifle for the price. I had a beeman as kid and that was my best purchase ever. It finally broke in 2002 and i have no idea what the pellet count was down the barrel. We would shoot dimes off a fence at 40 yards with it.

ALL of my guns are my favorite fun gun. Only those that belinged to my Dad are not fun toys. The locals call me a recoil junky. I only own two guns that aren't magnums, unless you count Dad's stuff.

i haven't been shooting for a while but, i'd  choose an L1A1 SLR ( FN FAL) which has a real mans recoil :D

for a bit more firepower a Bren is nice with a 7.62 conversion

another option would be a Lee Enfield MK III

I guess the funnest gun for me, when I first got it, was a reproduction Sharps 50-70 carbine.  This is a falling block action and the cartridge looks like a small artillery shell.  It's not limited to black powder, you can use smokeless powder.   I had to make those rounds, couldn't buy 'em 20 years ago.

The rifle doesn't kick at all, about like a .22 and is not much louder if not about the same loudness (with smokeless powder and medium loads.)  Killed my first deer with that rifle.  I guess what's fun about it to me is it's like a big .22 .  It's a lot of fun to hunt with, or was for me at the time.   Don't think I could see the sights for hunting nowadays.  They're little 'ol small sights.

FXI, this is an improved version of that rifle with a better trigger and a better scope if you bought one with it - made in Turkey.   i'm going to work on the trigger to lighten it some more when I get time because its still a tad heavy.

Lazer, I haven't tried shooting a coon with this rifle, and probably won't, but with a heavier pellet at 25 yards with good head shot placement I think you could take a coon.

LOL Laz,

I find the M1 shoulders more naturally for me.

It also has character that the M1a/m14 rifles do not have.

Plus, since we are in Commiefornia, I can’t get 20 round mags, so the M1 only has 2 less rounds per loading, and it’s easier to load.

I'm surprised there aren't any AK47 shooters.

Back when I was looking to buy my 'fun gun' the AK47 was in my short list. It lost out by reason of accuracy for varmit hunting.

Still, AK47...a good solid weapon, was cheap (i'm not sure today), ammo is cheap and plentiful, parts and accessories plentiful.

Yeah, sometimes it's tough to choose just one fun gun.  Just as in golf there is a best club for a particular situation, so the fun gun choice invariably involves what particular shooting is preferred.

I also really like several different guns, but my favorite is the Ruger Single-Six .22/.22 Magnum because it best matches my favorite shooting situation: inexpensive plinking at short ranges.

In my suburban environment that means home made targets at an affordable indoor firing range.  Tool + Situation - Cost = Fun

Now don't go having too much fun with that equation.   :O

cost?   I like 22's but I allways seem to shoot up a brick of em... $10-$15 worth..

I reload so 45 and 44 rounds are about $4-$5 a box of 50...  I shoot maybe 3 boxes of 44s at a time these days before the dreaded flinch sets in so the cost for shooting 22's and 44's is about the same for me.

I do like shooting 22's tho... just not as much as centerfire rounds.

Come on i just bought bullets and powder for 1000 rounds of .44 the bullets were $49 for just lead and powder was $29 of titegroup. I dont think that the powder will last for 1000 but its a start. I can buy a brick of federal at academy for $7.90 with tax. I reload and just order a conversion kit for my Dillon 650 for .44 and 30 carbine. Any way you look at it nothing on earth is cheaper to shoot than .22. I am looking at some $ for everything i need with my Dillon to reload 1000 of .44 and thats not my hunting rounds. Brass is hard to find but i have a friend that has a couple bags of once fired. Need to go and buy a box of some good pig killers for the spring.

Also we had a range close in central Texas and their are no public outdoor range in my area that i can just go and shoot after work. So that makes it harder for me to test my loads. I have some base figures from a friend that shoots .44 for years but like anyone that reloads i would like to try something new.

Its all making me worried that our sport is going down the tube.

Annual membership fees at our indoor range are going between 50% and 67% next year!  Amazing how inflation and cost of living supposedly usually go up in single digits while specific costs in various areas often jump by significant double digits.

I bought a membership at a local indoor range for $265 for a six months membership. Just got back from the range and it was so crowded and made me feel sick because of the guys shooting larger caliber rifle next to me. Loaded up some .40 for my glock and i had about 300 rounds i was going to shoot to make sure i liked the load. Well i shot about 2 boxes and got the hell out of their.

I think i am just going to shoot at the ranch but its two hours away from my house. Guess its time to do some really long sessions and make it worth the trip. Nothing like shooting 1000 in one sitting.

At first I'd say with cost and such being what it is, my Ruger 10/22. Then I thought of all the great times I had out shooting my buddy with my .45 USP against his Berretta 9mm.

Then I remembered all the really fun times. Like the time down on the river when me and my buddy was trying to figure out how to down some old trees for firewood. Neither one us checked to see who had what before we left and we soon realized we didnt have a saw or ax.

We had about 400 rounds of 12 gauge ammo between us though.

Needless to say it was a sight to behold with two guys shooting trees down and cutting to size with 12 gauges.

Him with his Benelli M3 Super 90 and I with my M1 Super 90. Why we even had contest to see who could empty their magazine, while cutting the tree down, all before the first shell fired had hit the ground.

So my fun gun is my Benelli.

FXI...   the cost for 44 and 45 is as I say.   The biggest cost is the lead.   even at 50 bucks a thousand tho.. you are talking $2.50 per box... add a buck and a half at most for primers and you still have a buck a box for powder.    There are 7000 grains in a pound.   8 lbs is about a huundred bucks..    a load of 12.6 grains of AA #5 in a 44 mag will get you about 1200 fps with a 250 grain semi wadcutter.  It is only twice as much for powder if you use WW296

I have a couple thousand 44 cases (they last a long time) and maybe 14,000 45 cases.

I also like plinking with 44's because I don't leave brass around.   Slob shooting angers people against our sport.

I never said that the price of 44's was the same per box as 22's I simply said that since I shoot so many more 22's to get my fix that it ends up costing about the same.

This is my favorite fun plinker gun. A Ruger 10/22 modified in a Krinker Plinker. :D (http://[img]http://www.hunt101.com/img/437232-big.jpg)[/IMG]

It's great here where I live in Minnesota. The "woods" is my backyard. I can open my window from my kitchen and release tension.

I think i am just going to shoot at the ranch but its two hours away from my house. Guess its time to do some really long sessions and make it worth the trip. Nothing like shooting 1000 in one sitting.

That's about how far I have to drive to shoot at a good public range. There are a few private ranges a bit closer (but not really that much) I may try to get into.

What I do is make a day of it. I bring two battle rifles with 100 - 200 rounds and a pistol or two. I just got a 16 gauge Remington 11-48 from my Dad, so I may add some skeet to the mix. The biggest drag is the lack of friends that are interested in shooting, so it ends up being a solo experience a lot of the time. Few of my friends grew up around firearms, and while many show some interest the distance makes it harder to get them out for the day.
