Title: worst food that you have ever eaten
Post by: JB88 on December 18, 2006, 07:08:52 PM
once upon a time i was having thanksgiving dinner with the lovely mrs. 88's family.  in this case it was at her great grandfathers house and i was quite happy to have the opportunity to break bread with such old timers and important members of her family.  (some have since departed)

the fare was traditional southern cooking with lots and lots of fried foods (including a deep fried turkey which was delicious) and casseroles and okra (which is the second worst food in the world) along with  various types of local bean dishes.  nothing too unusual of out out of the box for a thanksgiving dinner.  (having grown up in nebraska)

well, having filled myself full of the other goodness (aside from the okra dishes ...okra is slimy and absolutely disgusting) i came to the point where it was time to ask myself if i wanted to imbibe one of the delectable looking desserts that they had layed out on the dessert table before me.

cakes, pies, various types of jello w/ fruit molds...and there it was...sliced, cleaned, golden pears with a hefty dollop of what appeared to be a custard of some sort placed in the bowl carved out in the center of the halves where the seeds had once been.

i love pears so i took one and brought it back to the long table with me and asked mrs. 88 if i she would like a bite before i tried it.

"no.  i am too full, go ahead..."

so i did.

it was'nt custard it was mayonaise.

so there i was...a mouth full of pear and mayonaise nearly about to relieve my body of the fried foods and the okra and the various regional bean dishes when her great grandmother asks..."how do you like the pears?  i made them myself."

few lies have escaped my lips that were as difficult to conjure up as that one was...i still have nightmares about it to this day.

(and then there was that time with the chocolate covered beets that an ex girlfriends mother gave me for xmas as revenge for not eating her borscht....ew)

the topic is the worst food that you have ever eaten.  whats yours?

First of all, you are crazy. Mayo in the center is exactly how you are supposed to serve pear halves. Yummy!

The world's worst food is, without a doubt, scrapple.

Mine happened just about 35 minutes ago. I got a fresh beer out of the fridge and went out the back door with my dog. I put the can down an dplayed with the dog.

I then brought the can inside and placed it on the window seal as I went outside to look at my motorcycle.

I came back inside, grapped the beer and took a mouthful. What ever was in that can tasted like piss mixed with sulfer. I ran to the kitchen sink and spit up this crap. I poured the beer into the sink, and some dead flys came out of the can along with the "beer"

When I was out back, I grabbed and old beer can that on the BBQ. I through up and still can't get that tatse out of my mouth.

Does that count?

You should shut your window.

LOl, I'm not even kidding. I wish I were. The beer that I thought I brought outside the first time was actually in the kitchen the whole time. I still have this rancid taste in my mouth.

I didn't throw up until I poured the crap out and saw the flys in it. Just nasty.

Humus-to-go is probably the worst ever, but okra ranks up there.

I hate with a passion, runny eggs.  Scrambled, fried... Doesn't matter, that stuff needs to be cooked through.

So you thought the beer on the sill was new, but it was really old and you put the new beer next to it or something?

Actually, the worst thing I ever ate was a drink as well.  I was late for a Monday A.M. staff meeting but needed a cup of coffee.  I stopped in the lounge and grabbed a cup.  I was in a hurry and took a good swig before checking it out.  No one had made coffee that morning.  The stuff I drank had been on all weekend and was burnt and dark.  Eight hours later I still had the taste in my mouth.

Nuke, that's no so much "worst food you have ever eaten" so much as it is "handsomehunk not paying attention move of the year" award candidate.

:aok

Mine would be about 15 years ago I was dating a girl and we went and visited her grandparents.  The next morning the grandmother made breakfast and I was really looking forward to it.  What it was was scrambled eggs cooked to the point of having no moisture, bacon burnt beyond belief, toast with no butter, and.....tang.

Was like eating cardboard and washing it down with liquid Tide detergent.

And while we're on the subject; why do you damn yankee's feel the need to ruin perfectly good food by putting ketchup on it?  French fries I get.  Ketchup on eggs or on macaroni and cheese?  No effin' way.

I didn't explain it very well, then my connect freaked out and I couldn't edit my post.

I got a new beer, went out back and put it down to play with the dog. I placed it on the BBQ ( I thought).

Then I grabbed what I thought was the same beer..... but it was an old one ith god-knows what, plus flys inside of it. That is the can I brought inside and placed on the window seal (sill, hehe) and drank.

The actual fresh beer was never on the BBQ. It was on a table out back.

Getting old sucks.

1st. JB88,  vegtables like Okra and squash should be fried, tastes great, cornmeal batter and fried.  None of the boiled stringy crap...  My wife is from Georgia, her mom tried to get me to eat it boiled, no way...all her brothers were like ohhhh, you cant tell mom your not gonna eat her prize squash cassarole,..

Worst food I can remember... 8 years old, grandmothers house in Phoeinx, Ham, green beans, boiled potatos, and other stuff (long time ago dont remember the entire menu) .. my plate is passed up and I ask for ham, green beans and the potatos.  My mom hands my plate back and I said wait I want some gravy too.  "On what?"  "The ham and potatoes"  My mom pours on the gravy and hands me my plate.  I dig in, take my fork and cut a piece of potato, its tuff, i'm thinking in my little 8 year old brain, boiled potatoes are supposed to be soft, I'm thinking some one didnt cook the potatoes right as I put a big piece in my mouth and bite down,..OOMMGG, blech,, I make all kinds of faces, start to spit it out, my mom "dont you dare spit that out!"  My uncles and grandparents are just laughing their tulips off.  I chew and swallow it as fast as I can, trying not to taste this vile stuff.  I finally swallow and ask what it is,... "Turnips"  2nd would be brussel sprout, just smelling them cook makes me sick to my stomach..

I don't mind turnips, I'd prefer to not make a meal out of them but that's life.  In fact that is what they remind me of, is a raw potato.

Not sure which was worse -- mental block causing me to forget the proper names:

In Chicago I was invited to a Mexican friend's house for dinner where I was served some kind of "traditional" soup -- made from the stomach lining of a pig, from what they told me afterward.

In Bahia in Brazil they have another "traditional" food some friends wanted me to eat.  It was a boiled bean curd, cut in half, with yellow mustard and shrimp.  Now the shrimp might not sound all that bad, but these are the shrimp that are too small to be sold -- they boil them live, and just spoon this stuff on the bean curd -- shell, legs and all.  I was picking the tiny legs out from between my teeth all afternoon . . .

Quite obvious that no one here has ever eaten K rations. Or Kim Chi that has been fermented in a unwashed diesel drum. Then there are those rice and fish rolls from the Philippines that they throw up on the roof of the hooch to dry and ripen (read rot). How about the curdled sour cream and fresh blood pudding from Mongolia now that is truly disgusting.

I think this describes it . . . (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caruru)

Note that the black-eyed "pea" is a type of bean, ergo bean curd.

I think I recall it being called something else but it sure sounds like it irrespective of the name.  the nasty oil they fried it in left a slick texture for a while.  washed it down with a liter of antartica. the curried goat left a bad taste even after copius amounts of the equally nasty red stripe.  curried goat still wins it for me.

VEGEMITE!  We had a chinese gift exchange night a few nights ago with the sailing club.  I ended up getting a small lava-lamp look alike and a tube of vegemite from an australian girl.  The vegemite is so gross.  It tastes like sea water brought to a paste with sea sand.

It was a fun party gag though.  Emphasis on gag.

Biscuits with sausage gravy is great! Okra is excellent fried, but I won't go near it boiled.

The worst food I have ever eaten was at a truckstop buffet in Gallop, New Mexico. It was a brand new place that just opened up and I had passed up several other places just to eat there. I walk into the diner and there is a 20 foot buffet with everything you can imagine. I grab a plate and got some salsbury steaks that looked particularly good along with a big mound of potatoes and green beans to go with it. I sit down, cut off a big bite and BAM! It's liver and onions, not salsbury steak. It was all I could do to keep from hurling on the spot. I did'nt have an appetite for a week.

The mess hall at 29 Palms, CA is where I have had two regretfully unforgettable meals.  I can choke down liver that is prepared properly, with lots of onions.  But the stuff they "cooked" there had the consistency and appearance of a dusty boot sole.  I'm betting the boot sole tastes better.  It did teach me to get to the mess hall within the first hour of it opening, though.

The other bad one was the first time I ate greens.  Being a pasty yankee, I had not had the opportunity to eat greens (collards, turnip, or any other), but had wanted to try them.  Although they called it greens, which was their right as it was the proper color, it was    nasty.  It tasted like someone had emptied the lawn bag into a vat of boiling water.  I was positive from that point on that the southern boys were absolute morons for raving about greens.

It took about seven years for me to try them again.  This time a friends mother-in-law prepared them.  They were the shiznit!  Southern cuisine regained loads of esteem at that meal.

hmm. Tough one.
Despite what many think, Haggis is quite okay. (The missus and me actually made the Scottish version at home). So, since my country is renowned for gross recipes, such as charred sheepheads, rotted shark, dried fish, and our own blood-sausage, - they're really not all that bad.
Then we have sour whale-fat, and that's where I go breaking. yeachh.
But the top candidate is probably Welsh rice pudding. (maybe it's called Englsh rice pudding). It's the rice pudding being systematically burned and it's a total stopper for me. yeaccchhhh.

If any of you guys eat sushi regularly then you have propably tried something called Uni.  it is, from what I understand a sort of a delicacy in Japan.  It has the most disgusting texture, something like a large bunch of mucus sliding down your throat.  it has a disgusting taste too.

on a surf trip and was ona small Island off bali, the father of the family we were staying with had got a couple of octopii off the reef and offered to share them with us and I accepted.

Now i'm retty partial to a nice bit of squid, or those little Octopi halves you get in fish curries, but what arrived for our dinner was something else.

I resembled a brown stinking pile of cow poop, the only recognisable thing were the little round elastic band like sucker rings.

It looked like cow poop and it also tasted remarkably (or so I would imagine) like cow poop.

did i stop eating and push it away?

Nope as the little expectant faces of the family sat around me as they shared thier food meant I couldn't so I just had to tuck in, I was so close to spewing so often  :-D

Another (but actually nice dinner) I have had on this Island before was simple fried fish, nothing wrong there I hear you say, except you'd pay $1000's of dollars for these reef fish for you aqaurium if you bought them in your local pet shop :-)

Tangs of various sorts, trigger fish, Angel fish, the odd clown fish, was funny eating something you would normally consider a pet :-D

this was sausage, biscuits and gravy I don't know if it's the same thing.  let me preface by saying I have a cast iron stomach, have travelled all over the world in the US Navy and later conducting business and have eaten just about everything any human would consume including various insects and worms eaten raw.  I always ate local foods wherever I went, eschewing the familiar for the unknown.  sausage, bisquits and gravy, a white gooey substance of nasty whitish/greyish pork based gravy with chunks of sausage poured over two bisquits served on a plate.  I ate this mess at behest of a friend, we went to some restaurant in the panhandle near destin, fl. where he lives, derry's if I recall correctly.  the stuff smelled fine but it went down far less than fine, though I kept it down, to me it truly was nauseating, something about the texture and the grease.  I generally dislike southern US cuisine.  in fact let's extend that to US cuisine, oh hell let's just say all northern european cuisine as well.  truly unpatable stuff.

vulcan, I've eaten the duck eggs with the embryos outside of olongopo in the phillipines and washed them down with san miguel beer, I think the beer was worse than the eggs, they not being bad at all.  the eggs are a great source of flatulence and I drove my shipmates out our sleeping space that night.  :D

Liver goes beyond just tasting bad, they should make a riot controll agent out of it.

Their are two types of people, those who suffer an instantaneous stimulation of the wretching reflex when tasting liver, and those who like it. It must be some type of genetic resistance to it.

One of the worst "foods" I've ever heard of is baboon that's been left to rot in the sun for two weeks.

I have self imposed guidlines of what I won't eat.

No organs.

Nothing from an animal that has more, or less than 4 legs.

Nothing that has a larvae stage in it's life cycle.

I've yet to eat  a vegetable that I didn't like.

When my kids were younger I was on a constant quest to find foods that were disgusting to them and delicious to me. Oyster is a great example. Your kids will never eat your oysters off your plate. They hated avocados for a while, I never tried to convince them otherwise.

A man's gotta eat.

Mine also comes from while I was living in Japan.  We were having dinner at a friends house one night, and they wanted us to try some of stuff in a little glass jar.  It looked like fish guts, but I thought to myselg, "naw, even the Nihonjins wouldn't eat fish GUTS, right?"  After I gagged down a taste, I asked them what it was.  They told me it was called "shiokara".  I said "'scuse me while I whip this out!", and whipped out my always with me pocket dictionary and looked up the word "shiokara".  Sure enough, the dictionary said that shiokara = salted fish guts . . .

As far as sushi goes, I liked most of it except the ones with the salmon eggs on top.  Yup - salmon eggs just like the ones you go trout fishing with!  My youngest made in Japan with American parts daughter used to love those things - she'd gobble them up like they were candy.

Yup, "biscuits and gravy" is sausage chunks in gravy over bicuits.  It's definitely never pretty looking.  Done right, it is very good.  I will concede, that when done wrong, it can be very bad.    But you could say that about most foods.  Your one of the only people I have heard of that disliked it when introduced to it for the first time, so I'll just assume you were served some crappy gravy from a mix instaed of made from scratch.

Dunno where or when the sausage thing happened with flour gravy.  The original flour (white) gravy was made with bacon drippings.

Proper flour gravy has a very creamy texture to it, is just off-white in color, and bespeckled with pepper.  Served over homemade buttermilk biscuits, and ya got yerself one heckuva meal.

As far as worst thing I have ever ate goes;  Hmmm.  Difficult to answer.  I hate so many things.  Any vegetable with more than 7 letters (English spelling, single word) and green is pretty disgusting to me.  Sushi is a pukable commodity as well.  Then there are the MSG laden things, sure to evoke grimmaces and excess flatulence 15 minutes after eating it.

The one I'm familiar with is made from the country/breakfast sausage drippings.  I've seen it made with bacon, didn't like it as much.  Off-white is about right.  If it's just plain white, it's a mix and not as good.  (And, yes, lots of pepper.)

Oh... just remembered..

I stopped at a restaurant in Big Sur once. Nice place with the nuevo cuisine and all. I was feeling adventurous and ordered a chicken and garlic pizza with goat cheese.

It tasted pretty good the first time ... problem was I was sweating garlic and burping garlic and tasting garlic for about 3 days.

Never saw a single vampire though.

Worst thing I ever ate....

Blood Sausage....  We had it every Saturday nite as a kid growing up.  My Dad loved it.

Makes my stomach curl just thinking about it.

I like bisquits and gravy, including the sausage style. Then again I also like SOS, otherwise known as creamed chipped beef on toast. If a couple over easy fried eggs are put on top it's even better! YUM!!!

I've got a "grease tooth" so I like bisquits/gravy, and SOS.  i have always loved kieshka blood sausage - the kind with barley in it, cold, with black pumpernickle bread - also very greasy.

I REALLY can't stand liver, i actually gag.  I don't like heart (like deer heart) either because it has a livery taste/texture that reminds me of liver and makes me want to puke just as much as liver due to my conditioning.   Ughh.

Hey, you said you would try just about anything.  I did not say I would.

I am pretty conservative about my food, and anything which causes nauseau from just looking at it would be off the menu.  :D  So,... uh, I'll pass.

probably the smart way to go about it.  the curried goat thing was at a jamaican couple's home in mandeville and the meal was specially prepared for me.  the smell of the goat cooking alone left me apprehensive but like a good trooper I ate it.  then I did my time on the penalty box.  mooks are probably a little tough and stringy, probably be better off eating shoe leather.  :D

I've had goat, lamb and horse. Frankly the Goat was good, the lamb a bit too greasy and gamey. The horse was done ok but was a bit stringy. The goat and horse had a decent flavor but not quite as good as a good cut of beef. Lamb is very dependent on the age of the critter and how it's prepared. The best I had was in Mexico but it's still not something I go looking for. I tried mutton once and that was plenty. It's not to be repeated as long as I'm not starving.

Pizza Hut pizza with stuffed crust... Enough to make me hate all things even remotely Italian in origin, for months on end. It's been 3 years since I ordered from Pizza Hut, and I'm still not to fond of Chianti.

Back when I managed a Mercedes repair shop one of the mechanics, who is Mexican, would bring in breakfast tortas that his mom would make at home.  They consisted mainly of eggs, cheese, bacon, and nopalito (skinned, sliced, and cooked cactus) or some variation of those ingredients.  Being told this I was very skeptical of how it would taste.  It turns out that nopalito became one of my favorite mexican food specialties.

sausage gravy has to be made out of a cast iron skillet. It just doesnt taste as good made out of anything else. Kinda has a flat taste to it. Just made some over the weekend. After a few good sized helpings and half gallon of milk I couldnt move very well. Slipped into a nice food coma and didnt wake up till morning.

I was an exchange student.  I was in Bahia while traveling with a few other exchange students and a few locals.  Never made it to Brasilia -- avoided Rio de Janiero like the plague (host familiy was afraid I would be kidnapped) -- but did manage to see Sao Paulo, Oro Preto, Belo Horizonte, Slavador and many points in between in my travels.

But I "lived" in Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul, where I became well acquainted with the Churrasco.  Unlike the cuisine discussed in this thread, I strongly encourage any carnivore to find a good Brazilian Churrascaria (there are a few in the States).  Nothing quite like having huge chunks of various meats brought to your table on a spit - over and over and over - until the buttons pop off your shirt.:aok

That's great! I remember some exchange students back in '64 and '65 in Fortaleza. That's where I lived just before I moved back to the US. I hadn't been back to Brasil since then until Sept, 05 when I met my fiancee' back in Fortaleza. We had been sweethearts there in the early 60's.

Thanks for the reply :)

Mark

P.S. Forgot to mention that Fort Worth has a pretty good Churrascaria called Texas do Brazil.

I can't think of any particular grouse and disgusting food item at the moment, but usually it comes from a country near by: Mexico. Each time I have to spend hours on a chair hoping my internal organs will not explode after a visit to their style of garbage-eater for money, aka. restaurant. No wonder their country is so messed up, just look at what kind of poise they call food. And I'm not a picky eater; I enjoy sushi, fish-eggs, and such. But Mexican food is just sickening.........

That looks like it might be a good place to eat. I would hate for you to not at least try it. I have not been to one that was bad, they all were good, but some are better than others just like any restaurant. If you drink try a Caipirinha ;)  It is made with Cashasa, an alcoholic drink made from sugar cane, a distant cousin to rum.

Careful with those -- drink a couple sitting down, you won't realize they have knocked you on your rump until you stand up and promptly fall on it . . .

A "Caipivodka" will do in a pinch if you can't find Cashasa.  ;)

Reminded me of another "bad food" moment . . . desperate for more alcohol, and short of limes, a buddy tried to make a Caipivodka using tangerines as a substitute.  The result was less than stellar . . .

I think that would be a caipiroska IIRC.  anyways far too sweet for my liking but they are very popular drinks.  if they offer a feijuada on saturdays I recommend to try it but be sure you can take a nap afterwards. :D

I know we called it Caipivodka, but I wouldn't doubt if there are regional variations of the name (think Soda vs. Pop).

Ahhhh . . . . Feijoada . . . . :aok   Never quite understood the usually accompanying Farofa, though.  Too much like adding sawdust to me.

The farófa is an aquired taste but my kids like it and they have never been to Brasil. It is best on top of the feijoada that is best on top of rice :aok

Salvador, Bahia was the farthest north I got.  Never got to see the Amazon at all either.  Then again, 90% of the Brazilians I knew hadn't seen it either.

As much as I've enjoyed the hijack -- I think it is well past bedtime for me.  Maybe I can catch you in the arenas later this week and we'll trade stories. :aok

One last food item -- the north seemed to prefer the chick peas over black beans.  Black beans, I love.  Chick peas, not so much.  Especially not when made into a curd and deep fried in palm oil . . . oh my!  Full circle! ;)

This thread takes the prize for among the Most Disgusting.  Ugh, can hardly bear to think of foods I hate.  Things like that are best put far out of mind, although need enough memory to never touch the stuff again.

Lots of awful looking stuff I know just enough about to not even think about let alone taste.

Having qualified that, the more traditional and civilized foods that I don't eat include:

liver
grits
hominy
beets
sweet potatoes
any raw meat or seafood
