Nath has the right idea, but here is some more detail:
There is a great utility in Windows 98 called "msconfig". You can start it by clicking the Start button, and choosing Run. In the text box, type "msconfig" without the quotes and hit enter. You can also access this utility by navigating to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information and choosing the System Configuration Utility from the Tools menu.
Next, click on the right-most tab labelled Startup. Here you see a list of every program that starts when you boot your computer, and a check box for each one. You can stop any of the programs from being run by unchecking the box. It's best to try these one at a time, and then restart Windows and make sure everything works OK. There are some things you generally want to keep running, for example SanRegistry, TaskMonitor, and SystemTray.
I have an article up on my site about it here: http://users.andara.com/~sconrad/system.htm (http://users.andara.com/~sconrad/system.htm)
Sometimes programs also get installed without your knowledge, things like advertising clients that you don't want or need. You can get read of those easily with this tool: http://www.lavasoft.de/aaw/index.html (http://www.lavasoft.de/aaw/index.html)
It works great.
Well, that should help you get it things cleaned out. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
