Flame away at me for this.

But, Bono and David Gilmour have donated 10's of millions of English Pounds towards charities.    David Gilmour made every other "Live 8 Act" feel guilty when he donated the 1343% increase of Echoes after their reunion to Bob Geldof's cause, everyone else then did the same.   Gilmour has already said that he "plans on leaving his children with a small sum each, and wants to have them EARN their money, as he did.  They will not get a free ride after I pass on."

Bono has never changed, sold out, his message is the same as it was then.   He deserves it, just as Gilmour deserved the CBE in 2003.  They both genuinely care, which I believe to be an amazing quality that never lost their way on their "way to the top", most lose their morals "the bigger they get".

That's fair enough Masherbrum. Bono has been consistent over the years. Even in Ireland, where we tend not to take our celebrities seriously. There is a grudging admiration. It doesn't mean he still can't get slagged and he will get slagged for this honour.  Despite what the article said it's not as politically sensitive as it once was.  The relationship between the countries has never been so good.

Unlike a lot of celebrities who snipe from afar. He tackles the people in power head on. It means he can stroll into the Oval office and berate the incumbent face to face. I seem to recall GWB had to bang the table to get him to shut up on one occasion.

He could have been a politician had he not been a singer. But not in Ireland he'd be too straight for that!

I was never that impressed with Bono, always suspected he is more about publicity than heart.  I also think he takes himself too seriously.
