Picked myself up an edition of 'The Strike Wings - special anti-shipping squadrons 1942-45' by R Nesbit which has this startling photo in it, taken by Wg Cdr F E Burton (hope I'm not doing a copyright infringement here).
I'm guessing it was a head on situation, on a Beaufighter TFX, so pretty brave of the German facing 4 Hispano's. The pilot of the Beaufighter was 'temporarily blinded by dust and splinters' and if it were me, screaming like a banshee, but managed to land safely back at base. Incredible.

Edit, on further reading, could have been 20mm AA fire from a vessel based gunner
-
If they were on an anti-shipping mission as the book title might suggest, I'm guessing that 20mm came from a ship mounted flak gun.
-
as he flew away the flak gunner screamed "h4x0r!!" over 200
-
Thats a good un Pooh :lol
-
HOLY ****!!! :O :O F***ING HO n00b!
-
if that had been a 7.7mm he would have had an insta-pilot wound.
good thing that it was only a 20mm.

:lol the gunner probably called up the enemy and said turn off your deflector sheilds.

That's a lucky pilot that didn't lose his head.

Dont know about the rest of you but on landing I would have asked for a new windscreen and a new pair of jocks.........

Would make for an interesting landing

Bloody Luftwaffe HO dweebs. This is why the RAF brought the Hurricane IIC into service, so that these dastardly Luftwaffe chaps couldn't pull that kind of damn Hun trick any more.
-
lol i would hate to be these pilots...
-
I would hate to do their laundry

Interesting rear view mirror on that spit - not seen one like that before
-
If the Beau above is the one I'm thinking of, the pilot was wounded in the face, chest and arms by splinters from the windscreen.
He and his nav made it back from the Norwegian coast though.

Bit of a giveaway that it's a B of B Spit. They were all a bit makeshift then since they didn't come with them like they did later one when the more usual mirrors become evident.

doesnt appear to have the blown hood either.
