Title: Mem upgrade glitch
Post by: flakbait on December 26, 2006, 09:43:55 PM
I've already got a gig of Crucial DDR400 in my rig. Runs like a champ, very few problems. Running a few memory-intensive programs, though, causes a lot of system snags. Especially when flying in LOMAC with some of the details turned up. Frame-rates are fine, but the snagging drives me bonkers. Which brings me to the problem: Crucial doesn't apparently make DDR400 with latency of 2.5 in a 2.6v stick. Which is weird, because the 1GB stick I've got has a part number that matches the stick for sale both on Newegg and Crucial's site. However, the CAS is listed as 3.

Would it be safe to snag this stick anyway, or should I mix brands? I know brand-mixing should only be done very carefully, if ever, so I'm not thrilled at taking that route. But I'll take it if needs be.

Thanks in advance,

You can mix brands. It's best to get sticks with the same timing. If you download and run CPU-Z, it might be able to tell you the actual clockings based on reading the hardware itself. I had 2 sticks of ram, and one of them let me see the clockings, the other wouldn't. Once you know, then you can get a second stick with the same timings.

Might go with everest more in depth info:D

I ran CPU-Z and discovered why my timings weren't matching what the spec said they should be. My CPU runs at 333MHz instead of 400 (older Barton core XP-series). Which brings up two other questions.

Can I...
A simply crank up the memory FSB to match DDR400 spec and say to hell with 1:1 timing

or

B buy a stick of PC2700 and save a few bucks, since the timing would match anyway?

What would the side-effects, if any, be from doing either one of these?

Thanks again, fellas!
