I was especially happy to see the buff crew able to make a safe landing after the midair with the cessna.  Anyone know the story behind that?

Is it?  Aviation accidents aren't always fatal (in fact, they more often aren't).

Amazing thing that buff - was carrying a nuke cruise missile on the right pylon. Poor Cessna though. Lot of cold catapult failures though.

Sobering collection.  Sometimes everything going fine, then poof, disaster.  Lots of carrier and training mishaps, but those are among the most filmed too.

one that made me sad was the poor guy that ejected too low (looks like an A-5 Vigilante) about 7:25 in.

My favorite is the carrier landing that missed the wire then ejected and the plane just flew away...

I was a fan of the A6 that boltered, crew punches out and the aircraft climbs up and out.

annnnnd sluggish beats me to it.

My father was on a S2s.  He was very stunned at the video of it going through a wave.

Apparently it is flying off the HMCS Bonaventure.

The plane flying through the wave was astonishing.

What happens to you when you eject and land right in the path of the carrier? Let it run over you and hope for the best? I can't see them shoving it into full speed reverse and stopping that quick.

Exactly what I was wondering.  Seems to make more sense to use the slanty runway.
Title: cessna.close call
Post by: chancevought on December 29, 2006, 05:44:44 AM
the cessna close call footage was actually from an F-16.  It was at night and did nearly hit cessna, however no contact was made. The B-52 footage from unrelated incident.  It was during testing of first LANTIRN pods.  dont remember the acronym, somethin bout targeting Infra Red bla bla bla.  First saw that footage at Avon Park Weapons Range back in 1990.
Had it been a b-52 impact, I would put my money on the tail surviving against a flimsy cessna...jus my opinion tho.

wow alot of creepy stuff....

first thing, seems alot from carriers, and a bunch of times landing where the plane doesn't stop.

for me, the spookiest thing is bailing out, and being in the ocean directly in front of a moving aircraft carrier :O  i get spooked by deep water first off, second a giant ship with propellers that will just suck you under if you are near the boat. man that sucks.

second, i never knew that big giant white concord looking plane really flew... was it "operational" for a long time?

XB-70 never entered service, but 3 were built if I recall, and one was lost in a mid-air collision with a camera plane.

Mig-25 was built to intercept it, I think I've read, which explains the Mach 3 sprint capability.
