Title: Help Channel Translation aka clueless noobs
Post by: tedrbr on December 28, 2006, 01:57:21 PM
I suspect that most veteran pilots have tuned out the Help Channel, save for a few looking for an occassional laugh, looking to pick up some strategic info mistakenly placed there, or the few would-be helpful souls (identified by their thinning, graying hair....clutched between their knuckles....).

So, some of things you've been missing since HT started advertising on "DogFights" and similar shows that have been attracting the play-online-for-free-trial-bunnies to AHII.

how do i fli

:huh
Translation:  I have not taken any time whatsoever to look at any AHII related website to learn anything about this game I just downloaded for free, and want to start playing right away for instant gratification and prove how 733t I am.

A plea in which the hoped for response is "W,A,S,D, and SPACEBAR to fire"  like most FPS out there.  It's simple.... nearly a reflex reaction these gamers would often be seen performing in their sleep.

Appropriate response:  "Hit ALT-F4 for the help page"

whats th best plane

After all, there has to be a bestest, fastests, mostest powerfulest, uberest plane that dominates all others for the noob to pick, right?

how i go fast

Translation: I'm a PS twitch-game player and even though my indicated airspeed is in excess of 300mph, it seems slow to my video-tweeking mind.  Where's the afterburner and hyperdrive?  Where are the spawned upgrades?  It's taking too long for me to get anywhere and my limited attention span is not up..... to......ohhh........shiny things.........

what is fastest plane?

Translation: After all, I'm totally unaware of flight characteristics such as roll rate, accelleration, climb rate, E retention (what's E?), turn rate, firepower, or the what the effects of any plane at various altitudes could have on that plane's capabilities.

Okay: "Try a 109K-4 in a steep dive from 10K.  WEP on."

how i make tank go

Translation:  No I have not read anything about setting up controls, and have no idea that vehicle operate in Mode 2, which tends to install as blank, and I should at the very least copy mode 1 to mode 2 in order to get the blasted thing to move.  Others do get this far, but don't realise that these vehicles have manual transmissions.  Or that E will start the engine.

Sadly, I stopped tuning in to the help channel a few months after it was introduced. You want to try and be helpful, but really for the most part there's not much you can do unless you want to take them to the TA and walk them through most things. My thanks to whomever does still tune into the help channel with the intent to answer questions, but I don't do it myself anymore.

If someone asks me for help on a topic, ill help them the best i can if i have the time.

You have to love the new players tho as they sneake up on your six and o so cunningly shoot a perfect salvo up your rear end. I try to fly perfectly straight so they cant miss. Always helping them I am.

Most of them don't know there's a website, why don't you enlighten them?

This thread should be a sticky because it's a perfect example of weak TROLLING.

I mean come on look at the title----Help Channel Translation aka Clueless noobs, uh thats why they are on the help channel.....

At times of holidays like Christmas I don't tune in to much.....most won't bother after the 2 weeks free.

Normal working weeks is good for training newbie's because they had a genuine desire NOT time to kill until holiday is over.

As for school Holidays:rolleyes:   It's best for just stopping them blobbing the whole plot:huh

I gets um to type .radio 1 2 this makes their text buffer default to country ////////////

On rarer occasions you find people with a genuine desire to progress... even if they turn out to a channel 200 freak at least their in it to win it.

The ones that do know about this BB prolly read how everybody treats everybody else and just don't want to take part in it.

"how i make tank go"

The other one is rockets. People always want to know how to fire rockets. The problem with the help channel is that most people who have played the game for a while have mapped the controls to their joystick, and so they can't remember the keyboard buttons for secondary fire etc.

This gentle ribbing is part of the process of growing up. Aces High is not a friendly game. It is not Darfur is Dying or The Sims. It is a game in which you have to hunt down and destroy the other players; blast them out of the sky and off the face of the earth, repeatedly, until they learn. It is a game in which middle-aged men fight against children and vice versa. It's not Little Computer People.

I tune to the help channel on a regular basis although I don't pay much attention to it. Once in a while I catch some of it. Most of the time it's new people telling other new people what thier doing or telling others where to meet. Some of it is just new people being new and trying to introduce thier self to the community on the only channel they currently know how to use. Sure, some of it is giving out TOP SECRET INFO that is going to be the down fall of thier country. Some need to be directed to the training arena or the help page via the clipboard.  But once in a while it's some one that really has a valid question that only takes a quick reply to have them on thier way.

What gets me is a kind reply can usually take care of every thing that comes across the help channel and yet there is a vet/new person portraying to be a vet that wants to reply with a smart remark that does nothing in the manner of helping.

I don't tune to the help channel but when I hear those "how do I raise my gear, how do I raise my flaps, where are the dive brakes" questions I just tell them to go to set-up, keyboard map at any time if they don't know the control keys.  Usually I get a thank you and no further questions.

Guilty as charged :D

I used to try and help people out when I played...  These types of games are TOUGH and if it weren't for patient folks many years ago I certainly wouldn't have stuck with it.

Then again I don't even know if that's so true...  I started off on AWIII and had about a year worth of playing offline in the missions before I ever set foot online.

I still stunk, but at least I knew the buttons.  I wonder if any of the old trainers noticed less of the basic basic questions back in the day than now?

Okay, driving vehicles and the different text boxes are valid questions. I came here and read up before my first venture into AH, and the two things I couldnt find mentioned were:

How to drive vehicles

How to permanently switch channels.

Fortunately I was also smart in going to the training arena before the MAs, but really, tanks arent self explanatory, and it took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to permanently select one channel instead ofhaving to click the icon next to it. Granted,a ll of the others, especially which plane is best I answer with either alt + f4, alt + tab, shift 5 times, or just calling them impatient little children and telling them to read the instructions. However some of the one you mention ARE valid questions.

If a total noob is being too retaded, I have fun.

One sent me a join request in the tower. Since I cant fly the tower, I just upped an IL-2 then accepted him. We took a slow flight around the AF.

Then theres the one that ask for gunners about once every 10 seconds. Those are my favorite to drive insane. I spawn a goon and type the sccept message. We go off on our merry little way and since he dont have a gun, gotta be bored outta of his mind.

Then Alt+F4 is my answer to the ones that wont read the help section after being told by about 4 people

easier solution to annoying noobs, not the standard noobs but, rather the type that annoy you till you want them dead.

And remember.. squelching them just allows them to annoy others.. so consider it your civic duty to handle this stituation  yourself.

First repeat their question back to them.

Then begin with a long answer that almost but not quiet answers their question.

at this point they will reword their question.

Now is when you strike... answer thier question with words to the effect of delete your account and go back to playing xbox "hello kitty island adventure"

The response will usually be foul.
report them.
AHII is cleansed again and you have done your civic duty.

I took some lancs up, and was getting lined up on target, when the PLIN*PLING*PLING starts while im in scope mode. Well I really dont have too much time to fart around, so I put a request for a gunner. What a mistake. As Im calibrating, I hear the guns going off. I jusp back to the pilots position for sec, so I can go outside and look around. I see rounds going out the nose. WTF no targets there. I get on the mic, hey dood what are you doing on range. No response. THe little bastage emptied all my ammo in every gun and split. :furious.

Theres another time, and I think I got it recorded, we were under serious attack, and it was late, so I just upped some buffs for target practice, when i get this request to join, ah wtf why not. Well this dood didnt have a mic, so I start yelling get out of my plane, he didnt so I just augered. reupped. Then got another gunner with a mic. I think we took 3 out in 2 mins

:aok

Cheers

you know for the first time in my AH carrer i felt bad shooting someone down...

some guy with like 40 sorties under his belt, 2 lands, 1 or 2 kills and the rest deaths comes into an undefended base (about 2 AM CST) in a hurricane 1 and starts strafing the town.

i PM'd him he might want to try a different plane for that role, 'd then i had to log for the night...

i felt bad and for a minute or 2 almost switched to rooks, and was going to look him up and try and help him... but it was 2AM + and i was really tired.

for all the time i have been in AH i do know there are many many out there with no clue about alot of aspects of the game (i mean just things like what convergence is, salvo and delay, what different ammo loads do on certain planes, information you can get on the map and how to read it, some of the simplest things many vets take for granted "everyone knows that")

I believe he is saying, why help someone who doesn't take the time to help him/her self. If they don't take time to get the minimal basics..... then come online.... doubtful they'll stay long. One question is not bad... but step by step questions, not even knowing hardly one control in the game..... well they're out of luck where I stand. I am in the main arenas to fly, drive, float, kill and be killed and have no time for hand holding. Now if I am in the TA and they ask for help, I'll gladly spend all the time needed to answer any question one might have. There I am not saddled with the SA and such that is required in the MAs.

In short, if they don't care... why should I.

Heh... had one of these moments a couple of weeks ago in the MW.  My new player was on channel 1 doing the Napoleon thing.  You know...

"I'm up in a P51-D with bombs and rockets.  Anyone want to help?"

I was already up in a P38J with tanks ... hmmm, he's not on my side.  Just out of curiosity, "Where are you heading?"

"I'm going to bomb A9!!"

Well, I had just upped from A9... isn't that special... "Where are you coming from?"  Note:  other Bish were in the process of explaining radio channels etc.

"I'm coming from A60!  I'm going to hit A9!!"

Sure enough, tiny dar bar a sector away.  "Give me your exact position and altitude, I'll come and meet you."  Note:  other Bish were now being adamant trying to explain the use of proper radio channels.  Alas, without success.

"I'm about halfway there!!  Anyone wanna help?"

"Don't worry... I see you, I'll be there in a second."

As he spiraled in, I too felt the pangs of a guilt ridden conscience.  Therefore, I changed countries to try and help his fellow Bishops educate this individual.  Alas, he still would not listen and soon logged.  Nine year olds... who gives them a credit card in the first place? :D

Seriously. I often wonder that. Im 14, but I had to make a freiking powerpoint to my parents about the positive aspects to convince, and THEN I still have to pay for my own account, which makes sense, but all these kids arent even paying for it themselves! Their parents pay $15 a month for them to fly around in a La-7 and annoy people. At least by paying for it myself and actually having to work to get my parents to LET me pay for it, I dont take Aces High for granted.

Actually, I tend to recommend the site:

http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/ (http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/)

more than any other.  IIRC, it also links to both Dok Gonzo's fighter comparison site  and Soda's  fine aircraft website.   Probably should also link to Hammer's Netaces.org, or at least accesses much of the smae information.

It also has a downloadable AHII Quick Reference (version 2.03 last I saw) sheet.

Shuffler really hit on it though.  I have little use for people unable to make use of any small part of the resources available to them by showing some small bit of intiative, especially while still sitting down.   People that need spoon fed.

more than any other.

How to drive vehicles

How to permanently switch channels.

Fortunately I was also smart in going to the training arena before the MAs, but really, tanks arent self explanatory, and it took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to permanently select one channel instead ofhaving to click the icon next to it.

This is true.  Not only did I have about eight years of aerial combat simulation before I tried Aces High II, but I read all of the official documentation before going online.  Quite a few of the features are completely undocumented, and not intuitive either.

Anyone know how to set it or if you can set it so the rudder will go to defualt position after you have finish using it without having to manualy set it back to the middle position?

No, but mapping it to an axis (preferably pedals, or barring that twist or rocker) will make it much easier to use and center.

If your using keyboard for rudder controls, A and D are left and right and S centers rudder again.

Some guys & girls have it tuned and try to anwser the questions. What i kind of miss in ah is a hotbutton pad where you can put fixed text messages on so you could put together elaborate anwsers to the 12 most frequently asked questions and dont have to type it all over every time.

Also the fastest non perked plane in lvl flight  is P47N. That is also my default anwser after the 163.

Need to climb to 32k first, but the altitude wasnt asked was it?

Schutt, you can use Macros for that (Saitek or CH software to program). Then you can answer with a simple click of a JS button :).
