Title: USS Johnston vs. Yamato
Post by: RightF00T on December 29, 2006, 09:27:54 PM
Anyone watching this on History Channel show Dogfights...didnt think they did naval battles.

Its the tale of the epic battle of a small TFG vs a heavy Japanese cruiser group(including Yamato)  Some amazing CGI and explanations.

Dogfights : 08 - Death of the Japanese Navy  Airs on Saturday December 30 02:00 AM

In one of the most amazing yet lopsided naval battles in history, a mighty Japanese fleet led by the Yamato, the biggest battleship in the world, versus Taffy 3, a small U.S. task unit of tin can destroyers and baby flat-tops. The U.S. fleet is made up of ships too weak to fight and too slow to run. David battles Goliath in a fight for survival, with the lives of thousands of American soldiers in the balance. We will recreate this famous battle using state of the art computer graphics. Viewers will feel like they're in the battle, facing the enemy.

I watched it ...

I've heard of the battle before but this was the first time I've seen any detail about it.

I'm not surprised the captain of the USS johnston was awarded the medal of honor..

Just read a new book (Sea of Thunder) that includes the Battle of Leyte Gulf with that super battleship Yamato surging toward the hopelessly outgunned beach support ships.

Yeah, the USS Johnston was amazing, as were many of the other defenders before the Yamato group turned back thinking surely Halsey's task force would be upon them soon.

Yah, I love that show I like Vietnam era battles and all but I've only caught 1 or 2 WWII battles, whoever does their CGI is amazing.  I love how they stop the action and show you the exact manuevers and position of each plane before going on, it really gives a great feel for how much pressure these guys were under.

"Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors"

A must read for this battle.

I actually learned a few maneuvers watching Dogfights. During the fight over Hanoi they were showing a Cruisader pilot doing the "lag" and how to split 2 wingmen in formation. I had been doing this on my own in the MA without knowing it was a legit ACM.

The "Crossing the T" maneuver goes back to the days of sailing ships. While not as effective against modern ships, it was still enough to make the IJN break off their attack against the carriers. Gutsy move.

I can't stand the "Dogfights" show because it always assumes I'm an idiot... After every commercial I have to sit through a recap, they reuse graphics nine million times...

"Joe Blow is here.... 725,000 zeros are here, in the sun"...UGH

However, I will admit, the show about Yamato was presented much better than the air battles they do... This one wasn't as over produced... There were fewer annoying recaps.

I only knew the raw basics about this fight before seeing this episode, and I really felt they treated me well and taught me something... I hope this is where "Dogfights" is headed.

However, if they are going to do sea battles, lets see them take on one I already know a lot of detail about... Give me Bismarck.  That would be a great episode if done the way they did Yamato.

After seeing a fight I know more about, I would be better able to judge how well it was presented.
