Title: Very slow speed collisions - brushing wings
Post by: Benny Moore on December 31, 2006, 06:59:59 AM
If two aircraft are flying close to each other in the same direction, one at 220 M.P.H. and the other at 222 M.P.H., a collision will have the net speed of two miles per hour.  This isn't really enough to scratch paint.  It's fairly well known that the Royal Air Force gently collided with V-1 rockets to nudge them off course, and there is at least one account of a fighter nudging another fighter whose pilot was unconscious (to get him down to thicker air).

It seems to me that the game engine already has the capability for slow speed collisions.  We see them when we run into things taxiing.  I don't know what kind of problems are involved in trying to apply them to two players over the Internet, but is there any chance that we will see this happen, ever?

im agree. In the best simulator the collisions must be better

I watched Dog Fights on History channel and it was F-86 fighting Mig-15 in the Mig zone, and this pilot and his wingman where chasing a russian pilot and he took them back to his base in China, and they managed to shoot the guy down as he was trying to make a fast ditch landing, but AA had shot the F-86 Leader's wingman. The Wingman didn't have enough fuel to make it back over the sea to bail, so the Leader slowly moved his nose into his wingmans nozzle and pushed him all the way to sea. Then he unlocked his airplane from his wingman, and the wingman bailed out. When his wingman fell into the sea, he got tangled up in his cute, and the rescue helocopter was a little late to save him. But it was a nice try by the Leader to save his wingman from being captured.

Yes, its true

Here, you touch or get close to a b24, you clip your wing
we need something better

Don't get that close, easy enough.

i have collided and not taken damage.

a number of times i have scraped my plane on the ground and not taken damage, even in full flight during an ecounter.

i have also brushed wings with an enemy plane, seen little puffs of smoke like hit sprites, and niether of us took damage.

it is already modeled, the problem is that its very unlikely.

planes colliding with each other generaly do so at more than 2mph.

Watched the same episode...at least if the history channel got the information right...that's what happened.

How can it be right?  An F86 air intake is right on the nose... If the nose was in the tailpipe of another plane it wouldn't have airflow!

I think some old veterans lied to History Channel.

I don't know enough about jet engines to make a qualified statement myself but I seem to recall reading somewhere that on occasion one jet could be used to "jump start" a second by parking it in front so the exhaust fed into the air intake  on the 2nd, that the force of the exhaust was enough to get the turbine blades rotating or something to that effect.  If it is a myth it seems like a popular one @ least.  (again the example I'm thinking of was stationary on the ground if I recall correctly)

It does seem unlikely, but perhaps the engine was off.

Seems like you guys don't really know what the nose of a F-86F looks like.

See how the top part of the nose of the F-86 curves to a point, then comes the air intake. Compare that top pointy part and fit it to the nozzle of the plane. You would still have air flowing into your engine.

I dunno, jets are very finnicky about the airflow... Even with that little protrusion you're going to obstruct about half of the intake.  I still think its a little bit of 'enhanced' story telling on the part of a pilot.

(Not like us pilots ever tell tall tales or anything... no... never...)

i agree, sounds a bit like Scott in the freezing snow....

"yeah, this is what happened, but sorry, my wingman died so only I can tell this story."

Then on the otherhand Germans modified the FW to ram planes...I want that!

Are you thinking of the suicide squadron the German Luftwaffe had? They modify early version planes, then take them up and while the regular guys floated on a B-17 six o clock getting his A#$ chewed up, the suicide squadron would come in head on, or from top and just ram B-17s. Is that the kind of ramming your talking about? :D

or basically just the kinda flying the bish at 24 were doing lastnight..first the gv raid...then the bomber raid...then the pony raid...I almost expected to see 100 shored pt's sitting on a hill after the 4th failed wave.
