I've been thinking about starting a small squad. 3 guys min, 5 ideally and maybe as many as 10 max (only if it's difficult to get 3 or more on-line at a time). It would be primarily a Spitfire fighter squad but not nessesarily exclusively so. Here's what I'm looking for:
1. Already are or are willing to become a Bish.
2. Primarily fly a Spitfire although I'll consider Typh and Hurri pilots as well.
3. Consistently rank in or near the top 1000 overall.
4. Consistantly manage around 1 K/S or better.
5. Willing to fly in any/all arenas.
6. Willing to also fly some buff/attack missions and do some ground missions from time to time.
7. Usually fly evenings U.S. (prime time).
Here's other misc. info:
1. No formal squad nights. Just some guys who would like a good wing man from time to time.
2. No obligations to fly together. Do what you want when you want but if it's convenient then do it.
3. No ranks or any of that other silly stuff.
4. No need to change CPID.
I know I'm asking a lot so if it doesn't happen then oh well. Thought this might be easier than asking eveyone individually.
Post here if interested or look me up in the areans.

Except that youd have booted me from the Squad after the first tour, because of the K/D > 1 rule RT :)

yeah eagl, if that's what you're looking for, come and fly with us mate, easy going fun, big bunch of guys just flying and fighting together. i'd say most of the squad are excellent pilots, well above the average skill level.
if you don't get much interest, i'm sure you'd be welcome to fly with us on our channel, see how you like us, and we can toss you an invite ;)
knights, channel 171

Change the name into 71 RAF Squadron and i'm in :D

We would have NEVER booted the sweetst German Freulien(sp) from our squad. Besides....Schutt would have killed me anyway. :lol :D

rofl, nah. I just not been in MA much RT.
I hope to have a little more online time on the weekend, and I do not plan on spending it all in the TA. I seriously need to knock some rust off. That is if you guys are willing to take a LaLa dweeb alongside ;).

Thanks for the (sort of) invites guys. I appreciate it.
I was invited to join a Rook squad last night. I've just always been a Bish through good and bad. It was the country I was originally assigned to when I first logged on and have never changed (except for 24 hours one time). Same as in AW where I always flew as an AZ through both good and bad.
Don't know why that is but it just is.
If I ever think about changing I'll keep it in mind.

Best of luck, truthfully your describing the 71st (except we're really a hog squad:)).
I've flown for 12 yrs or more across at leat 3 sims with multiple squads and these guys are the best by far. Thats not ment to be derogatory to anyone else I've flown with but a realization of just how hard it is to find the right balance. To me finding that fine edge where you have just enough organization to be a true "squad" without the (IMO) excess regementation. I think your idea on numbers is a bit low. Whats great about the 71st is we have enough members that you almost always will find a few on line and often we have 10 or more during "peak play".
To us every day is usually a "squad" day. At the same time Red, Bat and the other "senior" leadership do a great job of balancing "suggestive balance" and free will. Most of our squad hops/missions are "spur of the moment" and are a logical extension of what we (both squad/"country") are already doing. Very little if any rigidity exists yet we often run sweeps of significant value combining both high surival and combat success.
On multiple occasions I've participated in sweeps were we've had a 100% return rate and a group total of 50+ kills per mission. I've seen RT,Bat & Ted land 15-20 combined kills 4 or 5 hops in row while actually supporting both offensive/defensive operations in a highly contested area (in jugs no less).
This is not ment to "hijack" your thread in anyway....every "side" should have a squad like the 71st. My suggestion would be to consider the following...
1) K/D is meaningless....the quality of the people make the squad.
2) Rank is meaningless...how well you work togeather determines your impact. Besides, I want a guy more interrsted in mixing it up with me then saving his rank:)...
3) plane type is secondary, we are a true "spit squad" but we fly sweeps in just about everything (mostly allied but not always). I'm primarily a hog driver and you'll find RT and bat in D25's a lot of the time...
The goal is good people flying togeather for fun with the goal of making an impact. Focus on that and you'll build a great squad you can be proud of....
All the Best

humble,
I appreciate your thoughts. Back in the days of AWI I was CO of what was probably the biggest squad in the game with almost 60 members in 3 "wings". Maybe some of you old-timers remember the Red Barons of AZ land.
Since coming over here I've resisted joining a squad or forming one. I did join one for 2 weeks but didn't agree with their tactics/strategies, their regimentation, etc. Even the Red Barons were too regimented (my fault) but that seems to come with the bigger squads. I've just wanted to do what I want when I want without HAVING to feel an obligation to my squad-mates.
That said I've always had the thought for a very small, mostly Spit squad in the back of my mind even since the early days.
As to ranks and K/S those are just there to say that I'd be looking for people with some experience. I don't want to be a noob-herder/trainer even though I'm sure most are fine people and some will grow to become aces.
The problem as a loner is that I rarely have a reliable wing man. I pick some up from time to time. A year or two ago TwoDogs5 and I had a fun night taking on about 6 enemys in a turn fight and defeating them all. Just last camp I winged with SG (who must have switched over from Knights for a day or two) in the EW arena and we landed about 3 dozen kills between us in 3-4 sorties (he in a Hurri IIC, me in a Spit V).
It's that combination of experience, skill and communication that I'd hope to find, not nessesarily a number.
I'm not the greatest pilot in the game but I know a good wing can pick my game up and I'd hope that I could do the same for my wing-man.

I "grew up" in RR#2 (JG26) on AOL back in 92(??) flying Aland before moving to FR (aland). A bunch of the guys I flew with (Yes, Stick, Laghead) joined the 327th steel talons and I tagged along. I left AW in 1999 when +Moss told me about AH....
We seem to have alot in common in that I tend to fly as a lone wolf. At the same time I do appreciate being in a squad. 70% of the time I feel like I'm "driving by" the rest of the 71st....3 or 4 of them are RTBing as I fly out or visa versa. That is however always my choice...all of us (even me) will meet and form up for group sorties. Ocassionally I'll get teased but all in all my wanderings are well tolerated.
We seem to have a wide mix of styles. There is a subset (of which i'm a card carrying member) that I affectionatly call the "suicide brigade" since we can invariably be found low, slow and tangled up regardless of how we started. We also have the "smart" flyers as well as a mix of baby seals, toolshedders, furballers and a couple of very formidable "aces". I decided long ago I didnt have the drive or mindset to form a squad. finding one that offered all the benifits with none of the BS was just blind luck. It sounds like your just looking for a good wing more then anything else. I'm sure there are plenty of bishops to hook up with. If you ever come knight for a day I'd be happy to fly with you.

Hi BaldEagl,
What Humble (Snaphook) wrote is pretty much right on the mark.
As CO of the squad I find it hard to make people "Follow Orders" so to speak. It almost seems childish in a way to have such a hardline in a game where we pay money to have fun. I have been involved in that type of squad when I first got involved in Online Flying. It didn't take long until I knoew that I wasn't in the Military anymore and didn't need to take orders from some make believe General. I got Paid when I was in the Navy totake orders. I wasn't about to pay to take em.
We in the 71st are a loose group. We have prolly 40-50 guys now. Not all of them fly as much as a few do. There are about 10-15 core flyers that fly relativly a lot. Then we see some for about a week then not for a month. This is fine to.
We run fighter sweeps a few times , then all fly here and there. Someone will holler there is a good fight someplace and we all get there asap. We have a lil structure set up for our squad where we give medals for certain things. But believe me when I say that a few ion this squad whom don't have a medal can hold their own with MOST. They just fight a bit different than others.
We have all kinds of styles here. BnZ. TnB. Combinations. Those who are pretty dang good. Those that are really good. And , those that try harder than most and are working to get better. As CO I don't care if your good or bad. IF you want to have fun , chat a bit , tell a few jokes on climb out , or just rib one another , then This is the kind of squad IMO that you need to promote.
We can do anything or do nothing but midless furball. We can up 5-25 spits on a fighter sweep , or Run some ponies to a bomber intercept.
We've got a great bunch of guys here.
I understand you may have an invite to someplace in Rook Land. Thats cool. But , if you ever need some advice , or what nots just PM me in game or if your ever on Knights , jump to channel 171 on vox and talk to us.
We'd love to fly with ya anytime.
-
Hehehe, RT. You dont know how spot on you are. I really do miss you guys!
Batfink, remember that HMk1 sweep i talked you into one night? 5 or 6 HMks against a double red dar upping at their base.... LMAO, we all died but we certainly mixed them up good before we did.
Or that Typh sweep? Where Steff tried to explain me BnZ tactics on climbout? Id never flown anything that got faster then 300 mph before....
BaldEagle, if your looking for a wing... someone to fly and fight and have fun with, go pay the knights a visit for a week or two. Hop on channel with those guys, no strings attached.
When im Bish, id be happy to wing you, too. Im not much of a survivor in the MA (I think id be part of snaphooks "suicide brigade"), but id be happy to try and clear your six.
-
"Not much of a survivor in the MA" ???
ROFL!
I seem to remember finding you in a target rich environment a few months ago. You in Hurri, me in a spitty (both MK1's IIRC). You are one of the best wingies I have ever had the priviledge of winging with.
If i recall right we put a few scalps in the old pouch, and you were ahead!
Don't let her snow you folks... Schatzi ......the force is stong in this one.
cheers,
RTR

We'd take you back in a second anytime.
Looking forward to you maybe flying with us next weekend. Hopefully we will have a big turnout and have some big fun.
Thanks for the compliments. WE feel like we helped you along in your humble beginnings and here you are where your at. We kind of take pride in that ya know.
Take Care and cya up......
Oh and if you see my Jug....leave it alone:lol

Hehe, always room down in the muck for one more...besides you already fly my 2nd favorite ride (hurricane mk1) :):aok

I was considering coming over to have a fly with you all last night. Instead I got my first member in my new squad.
I relaxed the British fighter rule (I spent the entire night in an FM2 afterall) but otherwise we've got a start.
We both picked up our games last night averaging 2 and 3 K/S on the 3 sorties we ran together (both in FM2's).
We're currently tagged The Loners because that's what we are/were. That might change, who knows.
Maybe one day we'll come over and give it a go with you guys. Sounds like a good group.
Schatzi, from what I hear about your combat skills I'll take you as a wing any day. In fact if any of you ever decide to venture into Bish land look me up and we'll fly a few rounds.
And as to the suicide crew or whatever it was, I think I already have a membership card. I've never met a fight where I was so outnumbered I wouldn't take a whack at it.
Thanks all and if anyone else out there wants to join us we will all have priveledges to sign new players.
-
Cool deal Bald....
As I said...look us up anytime your flyiing for the knights.
Best Wishes on your Squad and look forward to meeting you in the AH Skies. :)

New updated info.
Here's what I'm looking for:

3. Consistantly manage AROUND 1 K/S (or better) in a fighter.
4. Willing to fly in any/all arenas but mostly a LW squad.
5. Willing to also fly some buff/attack missions and do some ground missions from time to time.

Thank you.
Im currently still lone wolfing the MAs (and not planning on changing that). In other words, im one of those no-loyalty freelancers that keep forgetting which team they are currently flying for and whom they should spy on ;).
Seriously, im usually switching around on teams to wing friends or to be on the country with lowest number. If im on Bish, ill look you up :) I can do the "suicide" perfectly :).

This would be a very true statment in RedTops case for SURE.....Havent flown Bish...won't be flying bish.
Might as well add that a couple of players on Rooks will keep me from them as well.:lol
-
They let me into the 71th and i refuse to fly spits so its pretty relaxed :)
Great group or guys (myself excluded)
-
Woohoo! We're up to 3 members. Good guys and decent pilots too.
Winged with our newest member tonight and he landed 7 of his 37 kills tonight in 2 sorties (I take no credit for this)!
I on the other hand safely ditched 3 unflyable planes in the middle of furballs and landed 1 on the runway after being vulched. Not exactly what I had in mind about picking up my game but I guess they were all better than dying.

Can't seem to send you PM:huh
Looking forward talking to you....
Joined this game to fly SPITFIRES.
I'm still in the learning CURVE !
I don't give a HOOT about POINTS(arcade side of this game)
Been playing for 3mths and consider myself an average pilot.
Love flying disciplined missions (fighter and escorts)
Enjoy following team rules of engagement....
Open to constructive critics
RADIO discipline is a MUST between good pilots
On missions, pilots agree to same skin colours(what a sight!)
Would like to:
1) chat with you
2) Spend some time flying formation with you(s)
3) Once capable of flying formation, proceed with missions
4) Before being tested if we can handle many enemy planes, I would suggest we try few scraps in MID-WAR where we have at least access to SpitIX... This way we will know if we are ready for larger heavier fighting situations. If not, we adjust accordingly.
If you like some of the above and would consider testing me out, give me a shout.
Phil
ps. check out my signature !
:aok

Phil,
What's your in-game handle? Mine is the same as here. I'm usually on-line after 8 or 9 PM CST evenings for an hour or two and most weekend evenings/nights.
Everything stated in my updated requirements post is what we look for having dropped the mostly British birds part. That one requirement would probably have kept our band from forming.
We now have 5 members including myself. We fly anything and everything but we always try to take off with matched planes, rotating the flight plans, plane selections and mission leads among us. If you're up for learning new planes through combat this is the squad for you. Most of us land multiple kills in planes we've never flown when together.
As it turns out, EA3B has a preference for Spit's so he and I will fly them together often but we've recently flown F6F-5's, FM2's, Hurri IIC's, FW-190 A8's, FW-190 D9's, F4U-1A's, F4U-1C's, P-51B's, P-51D's, Spit V's, Spit VIII's, Spit XVI's and others.
We're all pretty experienced so diving into outnumbered situations together is where you'll often find us.
Our wing tactics are loose but coming together as we learn each others abilities and tendancies but our communications skills are sometimes outstanding which is the key to wing play. If you're interested I had a couple of posts in the Help and Training forum in a thread called (something like) Real Life Wingman Tactics that pretty well sums up my philosophy on the topic.
If you'd like to wing with us look any of us up. The squad is The Wingmen.
BTW, I don't use PM on the BBs.
-
BaldEagle,
I'll try to find you in the arena one night. I've only been on AH about 2 months. Used to fly AW long long ago. I'm a confirmed Spit dweeb. Seafire if I have to take off from a carrier. I'm interested in learing/practicing some wingman tactics. Don't have quite the kill/sortie ratio you were looking for, but I tend to make some bad decisions when flying alone.

Carwash, welcome aboard. Had fun last night. Looking forward to doing it again.
Phil, I've got PM enabled now if you still want to talk/meet up for a fly together.
