On behalf of the 68th Lightning Lancers, we regret to inform the AH community that Bill "68KO" Bundesmann, passed away yesterday. He was 37 years old.
He founded and commanded the 68th from it's inception here in AH. His loss to us is overwhelming. He will be dearly missed as a great squadron CO, a great friend, and a tireless and respected member of our AH community. Further words cannot express our feelings at this time. Go with God KO, and Semper fi! <>

My deepest condolences he will be missed

Oh my god..... I cant believe it....... Just a couple weeks ago, i was flying with him on a sunday event. I'm sorry for the loss. He shouldn't have died at a young age. Atleast we know he's in a better place.
-
Holy...ouch. What happened to KO? I have to know..he's younger than me, and I used to enjoy the heck out of flying with him. Used to crack me up on the big Lightning Lancer missions...

My most heartfelt condolences to his family both related and the 68th Lightning Lancers. May you all be granted solace in this time of grief.
-
Very sorry to hear that. 37 is too young to go.
-
Im truly stunned by this. What happened Hall?
-
Lord of all, we praise you
for all who have entered into their rest
and reached the promised land where you are seen face to face.
Give us grace to follow in their footsteps
as they followed in the way of your Son.
Thank you for the memory of those you have called to yourself:
by each memory, turn our hearts from things seen
to things unseen,
and lead us till we come to the eternal rest
you have prepared for your people,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rest well Bill and we'll see you soon.....

My deepest sympathies to his entire family. <

At this time details aren't well known, thus I wouldn't feel it appropriate to post about that. I do understand the desire to know, as something like this always serves to make one consider one's time in this world. All of your thoughts are much appreciated. Once I know I'll post in general terms, so as to be respectful as possible to those affected.

My condolences to his family, offline and online. <

This is truly tragic news!
To 68th Lightening Lancers I can only say that your Commander was well respected and always brought honor to you and your squad. The virtual sky will feel empty for his passing.
To his family I extend my personal condolences as well as the deepest condolences of all those here who flew with and against Bill. He was a fierce and extremely fair competitor. Your loss is felt by us all!
Bill, may you always have clear skys and smooth air!

I really dont know what to say!! I have known KO for a couple years, flown with him in many scenarios, snapshots, and in the MA.
My prayers go out to his family!! He is now flying as Gods wingman!!
If any memorial flight is planned, let me know asap!! I will be there!!
:(
-
Big huge
to him! Sorry to see ya go. Only flew with ya once, but that cant have bin more than a week ago! Jees!
-
Really sorry to hear this. Deepest sympathy to his family and to his AH friends.
Can't say I knew 68KO much at all, but I did fly with him on occasion in the Snapshots. And in one of the more immersive ones I flew, he was prominent.
Escorting 26s in Spit IXs to bomb a target in France. MacMaw and his 3 26s had been hit hard by 190s. He'd dropped down damaged and was hit by a single 190. KO and I dove down to try and clear him. Not soon enough for his second drone, but 68K0 got the 190 so MacMaw was still flying. Damaged but still headed for the target. But he was alone and on the deck.
Without thinking about it, we both stuck with MacMaw and took him into the target and all the way home. It really sucked me in as that's what the Spits were doing in 1943. 68KO seemed to know the score too and while rat-racing with the 190s and 109s would have been more fun, getting MacMaw home was the job and we did it.
Screenshot from that flight of 68KO and I covering MacMaw home on the deck over the English Channel.

What a tragic loss for his family, friends, and our community here. Since I started playing this game and became a member of JG44, we and the 68th have always flown together when we got the chance.
I am proud to call 68KO a friend even though I never had the chance to meet him in person. I have flown on his wing more times than I can count and his presence in this game always made it more enjoyable.
This truely is a very sad day for this community as we have lost one of the more honorable players of this game. He was always a class act and will be sorely missed.
68KO, Your personality, and honor will not be forgotten. May you rest in peace brother:cry
-

This is tragic news. I remember when the 68KO and the 68th came into AH several years ago. Its always tough news to find out about someone in the AH community passing who has been around.
It's even harder since 68KO and the 68th contributed to the AH community as well such as their active participation in volunteering in organizing AH Events.
68KO, my friend. My sympathies and condolonces go out to his family and friends. I hope that they find some small measure of comfort in their sorrow in knowing how much he will be missed in even the AH community.

To fallen soldiers let us sing
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the Mansions of the Lord
No more bleeding, no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
Just divine embrace, eternal light
In the Mansions of the Lord
Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard though the angels sleep
Through the ages safely keep
The Mansions of the Lord!

I still am in shock, and filled with much sadness. I will truely miss KO(keep hoping its a hoax, though I unfortunately know it's not) he did much to help make this a better game. I've known him many years, he was the one that brought me and eventually my squad into FSO. He truely lived for this game and the people in it, I know myself and our squad will deeply miss him. I considered him a true friend. Hope to hear the words again one day from him "Thanks for joining the 68th's mission"
I will truely miss ya Bud

High Flight by: John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of the earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered
wings
Sunward I;ve climbed, and joined the tumb-
bling mirth
Of sun-split clouds-- and done a hundred
things
You have not dreamed of-- wheeled and
soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.Hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with
easy grace
Where never, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of
God.
May he rest in peace

I didn't know the guy but it's harder for families & friends to lose someone suddenly. With long term illness it's hard but you're prepared; I don't know the particulars of what happened but I hope for his families sake they have faith. The faith that was taught me when I was young was to rejoice at the passing of a fellow believer because what they lost isn't as precious as what they just gained.
My sympathy, sorrow & tears for the family & friends who deeply feel the loss & a congratulations to 68KO on his new life with happiness & joy no person on earth can comprehend until their day to walk with the Lord is bestowed upon them.

The sticky post said KO died from cardiac arrest. Does anyone know if he had a known underlying heart condition or was it sudden and unexpected?
Many of us are in that age zone where we are at increased risk of heart attack and if any one persons passing can provide insight and perhaps some type of warning then it is a useful bit to pass that info along. He was so young to have died from heart failure. If anyone finds any info on what happened with KO could they pass it along I wonder?

I'm really sad to hear about this, christ, he's the guy who helped me out when I first joined AH, he noticed my flaps were not raised up properly and instead of giving me a hard time, he took time out to explain to me the use of flaps and to remember to raise them etc.
I still can't get to grips with the fact he's not here now.

I haven't the words to say or the heart to say them with! It is a terrible loss for all who knew KO to have suffered. As XO of the VMF 441 I would like to offer our heart felt prayers and toughts to his family and friends in this tragic time.
The lord is my shepard; I shall not want. He maketh me lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runith over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and i will dwel in the house of the lord forever.

Not to sound uncaring, but there are far too many tears and not enough stories in this thread. KO was a member of that rare group of people who was a true gentleman in everything he did.
When I was looking for work this summer (hate it when I misplace that) he set up a fund to keep me flying. After I got another job and was probably making more than him he offered to send me more money just to make sure I was covered. He didn't care about landing kills, he cared about the squad and the mission, and would not hesitate to dive (or climb) into a fray to help a squaddie or pretty much any other Knight who needed a hand...
...in fact, I remember one night long ago we were in a nasty dog fight. KO was flying a C47 when he got an SOS from a straggler about 10 miles away. He changed course to help. Using his .45 out the pilot's window he shot down Drex and Leviathan before he clipped the wings off Fester with his vertical stab. Two grunts in the back engaged three other aircraft with tommy guns and M1 carbines through the open jump door while KO, wounded, tried to nurse the now stricken aircraft to the nearest freindly field...
Really KO had a knack for trying to eat trees in the C47, especially when the town was in sight and the nearest barracks six sectors away. He tended to spend more time chatting than flying some days. I'm not sure he EVER landed a P51 without at least a dozen holes in it, even if he had to use his own 45 to put them there, but he by gawd had fun and he made sure everyone else had fun, too.
He was one of a kind.
I'll be spending more time in the P51 now. That was my favorite Dweeb's favorite aircraft. What he lacked in skill he more than made up for in humanity, though, and the rest of us would do well to learn something from him.

WHAT???
I didn't even know this was possible???:lol
So, you can shoot your .45 while you are flying a C47?
You can now be one of the goons in the back, and shoot a weapon?
I have been away too long, much has changed.:)
If anyone would have know about these things, it would have been KO.
Maybe we should start a "KO stories" thread Yes? no?

KO story
I was the last of the 68th(when I flew FSO with them) in FSO, in a P40E.
got back to friendly field with KO in the back seat watchin, but the friendly field had 4 zero's over it, told him I was going in, he told me to go for it.
with him as my extra set of eyes I shot down all four zero's, he was going nuts, laughing his *** off. I always tell that story to squaddies, and used to say go ask KO if ya don't believe me, but that can no longer happen.
a lot of fun times were had with KO
and the 68th
and let's not forget 68falcon, who I know is suffering more than anybody

AUTHOR: John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (1922–41)
QUOTATION: Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

This is some very sad news, it sucks that real life can be so cruel, maybe in the virtual sky of Heaven he can just re-up and laff his arse off as it always seemed he did, here's hoping he can.
68KO was one of the few people in this game who tried to make it more interesting and fun for everyone, his snapshot events were always fun to join in, whether there were 10 fliers or 50 - he still made his best attempts to make it worth our while to join in the event and play our virtual war battle. This game community will sorely miss him, I am sure there are many players in this game who didn't know him, but still benefited from his sharing nature, he was one of the few guys that had fun - which is what this game is meant to be - I cannot remember ever seeing 68KO fill up the all country channel with any derogatory remarks or taunts, we all can learn from his example.

I remember a while back, must have been over a year ago by now, JG44 decided to put together a HQ bombing run. We went up with about 12-15 bomber formations with escort and started climbing out. All of a sudden Knuckles or Doobs, not sure which, comes up on VOX and says, "Hey just found out the 68th is hitting our target in a few minutes, do we want to go hit something else?" Well after a brief discussion we decided to press on to the target just in case the 68th weren't able to make it.
About 15-20 minutes out we see the enemys DAR go down. WTG 68th is flashing scross the text channel. Then 68KO pops up on text and is telling us that his guys are bailing over the HQ and are going to shoot the goons with their .45's as they come in to re supply the capital. Well we're all laughing at this but they end up doing a pretty good job of it.
Just when we are lining up on target the HQ comes back up, 1 minute later, bombs away from JG44 and down it goes again. Fighters are climbing up to us and KO is now on our vox channel asking if we need him or any of his guys to join up and gun for us. He's laughing like a little school girl because of the 1-2 punch we just gave them and is having a blast running around on the ground with his .45 shooting at goons landing, trying to re supply.
Even though we didn't plan it that way it always seemed that whenever JG44 put up a big mission like that the 68th would also be right there with us with their own mission. We'd plan it on the fly and go kick some serious butt.
KO always knew how to make the game fun for those flying with him.

Rest in Peace my ole friend!
After the demise of AirWarrior myself and several other C-HAWKS finally found a new home in AH1. As the CO early on we struggled to recreate what we missed most about our beloved AW, community, comraderie, etc...
One night this happy go lucky, almost giddy with enthusiasm, voice comes through my headset on private chat. "Hey Goose, why don't the C-HAWKS hook up with us (68th) and lets do some damage!" Well we did just that, that night and many more nights thereafter. We always loved covering the 68th Lightning Lancers' Lancaster raids into the full red dar bar! He truly was and will be a pillar of this community as he has always broken down barriers between groups and squads, and all "just for fun!"
In his memory I hope that we all realize what an important part of each others fragile lives on this plane we all are.
I have been away from AH for awhile but will make a return for the Memorial Flight in his honor.
(stands and Salutes!) To 68KO, his family, and his Squad! I'll miss you bro!

It was just a couple of weeks ago, that the 68th and JG 44 boys went on this 5-6 base run ala 68KO. It was typical KO all thought out to the last detail targets, rides, load out, always down to the last detail. We were very successful that evening. Always begining with "Thank you for joining the 68th mission." How I am going to miss that............. Just the same I know KO would want the tradition continued. I will certainly always be available for a 68th mission. Just like KO would want it.

Pilot divine, and Lord of all on Aces High
Thine are the starry squadrons of the sky!
Lead us whose wings for freedoms sake now soar,
Into our hearts thy faith and courage pour
Set Thou our course whose trust is laid in Thee!
Oh Thou who chartest all eternity!

He was tons of fun to be around and quite a CO, im shocked.

I met 68ko online about 3 years ago when I first started flying events. He and the Lightning Lancers took me in, showed me the ropes, and treated me well.
Later, we served together on the command staff of a couple of scenarios, and had a good time together. He was witty, and dedicated to the game.
I'll miss him.

And I think this is one of the best fitting tributes to him. I think, as a possible tribute, maybe to have a section of the HT site, under the Community section, set aside for our departed players. Because stuff like this shouldn't be lost in the blackhole of the BB - ever.

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Cant keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that’s learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Cant keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapor trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There’s no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Cant keep my eyes from the circling skies

I just read this thread and had no idea. I enjoyed taking my squadron up against the 68th many times in the AvA arena and I got know 68KO from flying with and against him many times. These are the things that put it into perspective for me and I am praying for his family. Godspeed 68KO you will be missed.

KO was like my hero back in 2002... I was 11 years old that january and he excepted me into the squad like I was as big a person as some of the senior members... Even after I was out of the squad KO was always kind and would never hesitate to fly with me... always saying I was a good stick but I had a mouth on me! Being the 11 year old anti social I was at school I could not find a better influence in an online community to help me branch out. I am 16 now and love school. thanks KO!

> to all of you that remember KO and for all the kind words and thoughts.
Goose, you are correct! when KO and I first flew together we were in AW first MAWs then MOTLEY ACES, 68KO was MOTKO and I was MOTBG.
About 7 years ago(shortly after we formed the 68th, I Moved from Texas to Maine, during that trip I stoped by NJ to meet KO(Bill) irl. Bill and I became very close talked on the phone every day. Three months after I moved to Maine My wife at the time began an affair and I was then going threw a nasty devorce. Bill called me every day just to make sure I was ok, and yes we flew everyday. Then I moved back to Texas. On the way back down My kids and I stayed with Bill and his family for a few days in 2003. We were treated like family from Bill and his wife Sue and the kids. We went to see the U.S.S. New Jersey and had a great 4th of July with them. I am actually older then Bill was and It does make one think of their own mortality. I find it very difficult to fly... knowing that I'll never hear Bill on the radio or see him off my wing.

I've been away from the game a little while. I am completely shocked by this news. I flew along with 68KO in a couple events--he and his crew were a pleasure to fly with.
My sincerest condolences to 68KO's family and friends. I will carry this "empty" feeling for quite some time, now.

GAWD I remember that sortie well... 68KO and You were GREAT Guppy!!! Thanks for the screen shot... That is now my puters background.
I feel bad that I missed the Memorial Flight..new job and all...yet I wish I could have been there. 68KO was a great stick not to mention a great guy, always there to help and teach.
My deepest Heartfelt condolences to his Family and all of those he had touched in life. I seen the film of the Memorial Flight and it brought many tears to my eyes, a chocking lump in my throat.
Eternal Father, strong to save / John B. Dykes
Verse
Eternal Father! strong to save,
Whose arm doth bind the restless wave,
Who bids the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea.
Verse
O Saviour, whose almighty word,
The winds and waves submissive heard,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep,
And calm amid its rage did sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea!
Verse
O sacred Spirit, who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
Who bad'st its angry tumult cease,
And gavest light, and life, and peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea!
Verse
O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe'er they go,
Thus ever let there rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
Amen my Brother...
I will forever miss you.

I am not a normal forum reader and just read this topic. I may have said something online but in any case I wish to extend the condolences of the Marine Air Wing to the "6-8" and to KO's family. I personally enjoyed working with Bill on joint squad missions. KO was a driving force in many Knight resets. But he was first and foremost a good leader and friend to many members of Aces High. He will be sorely missed.
