Title: Geforce 7800GS+ gfx errors
Post by: Keiler on January 03, 2007, 08:28:52 AM
I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe MoBo, AMD64 3000+ CPU and 1gig ram.
Previously (and now again!) installed gfx card Radeon 9600.

I installed the card (see title) according to the manual, but everywhere, and I mean from the beginning of the boot sequence (i.e. also in BIOS screen) I have lots of artifacts, strange symbols etc.

Are there any known issues with this combination? I cannot get it to work. My PSU has 480 Watts so this cannot be the issue (only HD attached, no other devices which could guzzle up THAT amount of power) and manual states 450W min for 7900 class.

Old gfxcard works fine again.

Any help? Could this be a defective card?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Matt

Did you uninstall the 9600 drivers before installing your new card?  It is a must do thingy!  First go to control panel, add/remove software, select your driver program and remove.  Reboot and do not let winblows install but cancel.  Now you run Driver Cleaner Pro (a freeware program) and select the type of vid card and clean.  Then install your new vid card's drivers.

Hope this helps.

All the Best...

Does this even affect BIOS? I mean even in the BIOS screen it does have artifacts and weird symbols.

Thanks for your help!

That actually sounds like a card running hot or damaged. But then again, im not an expert :).

It sounds like either heat, power, or just a defective video card.  Heat is easy, just open the case, put a desk fan nearby blowing into the case area around the video card.

I think it might be power. I never closed the case during testing. I found out that eventhough its an AGP card, it has a PCI-E power connector. Before you laugh ( :D ) it came with an adapter cable which is supposed to be plugged to HD power cables, you need two of them with now other connection, though.

As my PSU has a separate PCI-E power cable I will try that and see what happens.

Thanks for all your help!

I had to get a new power suopply when I went from a 9800 pro to a 7800 gs co as the 12 volt rail didn't provide enough amps

Same motherboard and card as you.

Had slightly different problems but all were fixed by going into the BIOS and setting the "PCI latency timer" to 256.
