Smoking...Been three days now and i'm on the verge of going nuts...I'm going cold turkey (no gum, no patch etc...). Ever since I quit I have had a splitting headache that seems to get worse every day. I feel very comfortable with my self control, and know I don't need to go back to cigs, but can anyone give me any tips for coping with the process...Especially the physical part of it.:furious :cry  :noid :O

Cav,
I'm quitting also. I'm also going cold turkey. Today is Day 3. I spent the first 2 days with monster headaches and blurry vision. I have just tried to stay busy, and telling myself it won't be so bad tomorrow. I am already feeling less physical agony, and will see this thru.
I'm 33 going on 34. I have children now. My father is dying because of smoking (2 massive heartaches attributed to smoking). I don't want to die from Cancer.
I'm here brother.
-
I quit when I turned 30 . Good on you to do it .
I used "Life Savers" in my pocket . I could reach in to get a cig and get me a life saver :) worked . I am 53 and still not smoking .
I did quit the Life Savers when my teeth started to hurt :P hehe .
In two years you will wonder why you ever smoked :aok

Just passed my four year anniversary. Cigarettes are an addiction. Once an addict, always an addict. The cravings will gradually fade, but never completely go away. I still find myself in situations that trigger an almost overwhelming urge.
To stop smoking is a decision that you have to want to make; to go into it half-hearted means to fail. Quitting was one of the hardest things I've done and one of the things I'm most proud of. If you have kids think about them; do you want to be around to see your grandkids? Do you want to make them watch you die a slow horrible death? Good luck.
To people who refuse to quit I say kill yourself with a gun: It's cheaper and much quicker.

I love smoking.
I smoke about a pack a day of Camel menthols.
That first deep long drag after dinner or when you wake up from a deep good nights sleep is the best!

-
Keep it up, Cav. I had quit for short periods (couple of weeks/ months here and there) but when I truly kicked the habit I went cold turkey and had the resolve to stick it out. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Stay strong and Hang in there!

It'll be 7 years for me in April. I took the drugs (Zyban) and it was a relative breeze. I still have urges, and I actually smoked a cigar while drinking on my bud's boat last year. I was deathly afraid I'd pick up the habit again, but I didn't. I still go hang out in the smoking area here at work just because.
-
thanks guys....metally its not the tough...Physically is a whole different story. Like I said, the headaches are unbelieveable. This is my third time quitting, but first time really going into it 100%. As most of you know I am a civil pilot right now, and attempting to make a career in military aviation. My family has a history of heart condition, and I know if I continue to smoke, I will end up having a heart attack before retirement, grounding me, civil or military. i'm in it 100% this time.
thanks cav

when i went cold turkey the side effects lasted about week and a half to two weeks, then your body will start feeling good and food will taste good again.
it just takes will power. stay with it.:aok
-
The first few days/weeks are the hardest just stay with it. It's mind of matter.
-
I've only quit drinking soda so I don't know the half of what you're going through, but I support your decision to quit 100%.
-
Cav58d,
Post a picture of yourself as collateral. That way if you start back up we will photochop the heck out of your pic and poke fun at you.
You could also vow that if you start back up you will fly nothing but the P-40B for a month.
-
Today's the 7th day without a smoke for me. Not that I've made any resolution to quit but I've been really sick for the last week and cigarettes taste funny (as do all things now) and the thought of smoking makes me queasy. So I'm going to ride this and see how long it lasts. If I make it to the 2nd week mark I may just go all the way and quit for good.
ack-ack
-
Cav Good luck man.
I quiet Chewing tobacco about 5 days ago. Along with you I been having splitting headaches. Keep stronge brother, we will make it threw.:aok
I do feel better about myself for stopping. I am getting less and less the urge to do it each day.
-
I tried to focus on the good things that will come when I successfully broke the addiction. That should be at about 3 months. Try to notice how fresh the air is and how deep you can breath compared to when you smoked. That was really the clincher in my case..that first deep fresh breath of air. Also, it is important to realize you dont just 'quit smoking'. quitting smoking is 1000's of small battles, each one has to be won. Every time you rationalize 'just one wont hurt' or after that big steak dinner or at a bar or party. Each battle has to be won. Even 1 drag is a back breaker and the whole process starts again. Good luck.
-
a year and a half ago I was smoking 3.5 packs of camels per day.
I used the patch and sunflower seeds.
best of luck to you
-
It's been almost four years since I quit. Day three was the toughest for me and then it the physical craving started to get better. Once the withdrawals are over, your home free as long as your mental attitude is committed to never, ever have even one drag ever again as long as you live.
Every day I'm thankful that I am a free man at last and will never be a slave to nicotine again.
Hang in there, your future self will be eternally grateful.
-
I am in the process of quitting after a 35 year 1-2 pack a day habit. My cardiologist prescribed me Chantix. It blocks the recepters in your brain that nicotine gives a buzz to. You take it while still smoking, and it weans you off the nicotine. Then all you have to do is break the habit of picking up a cig. Next week is my quit date.
Right now I'm down to 2-3 cigs a day and have no problems unless I drink alcohol, then the craving is massive.
-
Ive never smoked. Find it totally offensive. Grew up with parents that smoked (3 packs each a day)from the time they woke up to the time they went to bed. A studmuffin was burning in every room of the house at all times. They never stopped. When I asked for a window to be opened in the house or the car they refused. Of course in the 50's everyone smoked. It was hell for those of us (the minority) who couldnt stand it.
Times have changed and smokers are being forced by legislation to be courteous. And Im glad.
To this day I hate cig smoke. And even worse I cant stand the smokers who believe they should be able to smoke at the expense of those around them.
I >>S>> you all who are trying to quit. And I respect those of you that smoke and show courtesy to those who dont.
-
Cav and RPM, best of luck to you in quitting.
-
Hang in there cav and rpm. If I can do it then you guys can.
Take it one hour at a time. If you can do that for a few years then you are home free. The older you are the fewer years you have to endure it :)
Oh it gets better very day, just think about your families when it sucks the most.
-
While i'm at it, I might as well just give up drinking...At least for a month or two...I don't see how there is any possible way I can get drunk in the next couple weeks and not go crazy for a butt....
-
When you get a really bad craving pour yourself a tall glass of icewater and drink it.
-
Good Luck Cav and RPM, I quit over 2 years ago, the first 2 weeks are definately the hardest, after that it gets somewhat easier :aok

drink water. lots and lots of water.
(and then drink more.)
the quicker you get the toxins out, the faster your body can begin recovering.
hang in there. if you have gone this far you have what it takes to make it permanent.
keep it up!!! way to go!!!!

Plus peeing all the time will help keep your hands busy.
-
oh yes. you will pee lots.
i was a two pack a day'er. 3rd day was the worst. after two weeks i began to stop thinking about them every 10 minutes or when i got up. after a month i stopped thinking about them every day.
a few months and i could smell them on my clothes and understand why others found them so totally revolting.
i had to kick somethings butt. smoking got the hit.
-
I've always been a fan of "spicey V8". I just went to Stop & Shop and bought a 48 pack. They will be my new butts. I'm really glad I am going forward with this though, and I appreciate your support.

In adition to drinking lots of water, DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING WITH CAFFINE IN IT!!!! Caffine can and most likely will trigger a craving for a smoke. Alchohol should be avoided as well. Sport drinks are ok, but ice water is the best thing. In addition to flushing your system it will also help maintain your weight or even help you loose a little weight. Keep a big jug of water in your fridge and add ice before you drink it. As it enters your system it cools your bodies core temp and causes you to burn more calories trying to warm back up.
Best of luck to you guys trying to quit. I did for a couple of years and then started again. Pretty stupid thing to do and I need to quit again since I have already had one heart attack. Going to try Zyban this tima around and see if that will help. I have my appointment with the doctor in 2 weeks so wish me luck.
-
Yea looks like its getting on time for me to try to give it up also
I dont even enjoy it anymore. Between that and the prices $6+ per pack here in Jersey. Its getting to the point I cant even afford it anymore.
Thing is. it never seems ot fail.
Right when I think Im about ready to quit.
someone pesters me or tries to lay some sort of guilt trip on me about smoking.
And for some reason as soon as that happens. It just makes me want to smoke more.
I dont know why. but it does.
I guess maybe cause I know it has to be in my own time and on my own terms.
And if I do it I do it. and if I fail I fail.
but its gotta be on MY own terms
I just hate whe people pester me about something. It just makes me want to do it all the less.
-
BTW
WTG Cav and the rest of ya's who Kicked it

Dreidlock, I totally agree...Smoking, and even moresoe, the military. Whenever anyone tells me how stupid I am too smoke, or how "I really don't want to go into the military....just not now" blablabla, it pisses me off to no end. I try and kindly tell them that I appreciate their concern, and their single comment will suffice, but most of the time they continue to try and lecture me, and it is the most annoying thing on earth.

Hmmm, or maybe treat yourself to your favorite beer or drink after your successful 1st week. Smoking while drinking is one of hardest habits to break and the booze makes you weak. IF you go into it realizing what the battle is gong to be, you can start to train yourself. Dont go to a party after your 3rd week off of cigaretts without practice in the booze-n-cig divorce.
-
Been a year for me, and I have dreams of smoking. Cigarettes dancing around my dreams like efelumps and woozles.
On the bright side:
Once you get to the point you can drink a beer without a smoking fit, the beer is 100 times better.

heh, I'm exactly the same way, it still pisses me off that there is a special "waiting on the short bus" area for smokers at work now.
"Quit smoking now" commercials drive me to distraction.

I quit about 10 years ago. I relapsed about three or four times after several months, and once after about a year I think. After the third time, I was certain that nicotine is addictive. I quit without patches or any aids, which probably would have helped.
Good luck with your quitting and don't get discouraged if you relapse. Part of my issue was really understanding nicotine addiction. It's subtle. I remember dreams about smoking for at least five years after quitting.

Day four and mentally i'm holding up extremely well...I have no mental craving for a butt what so ever. Physical effects are still very strong though. Headache is still constant, and I find I am now constantly hungry. I'm doing like everyone said and consuming massive amounts of water and V8 juice to crave the hunger and clean out the system. Furthermore, I did a complete clean out of my car today. Took me a couple hours, but the inside looks and smells like it's right out of the dealership. I think this is important to me because this is a place I would ALWAYS smoke, and changing the routine may help.
thanks again

Day four for me too. Been smoking for twenty plus years. But I promised my Grandson I would quit, and when the urge becomes strong I think of him. It helps, alot. I've cleaned my office top to bottm, and my car, to get rid of the smell. I'm looking forward to this summer being smoke free. You can do it Cav, just gotta stay focused, and get out of the routine. I've found that when the cravings strike their hardest, If I settle myself and perform deep breathing exercises, it helps tremendously.

Went to buy some smokes the other day. 4 packs came up to $20.61.
WHAT????
"The state added a buck to every pack, sir, starting January 1st."
Ok, fine, I'll take 2 and smoke them very, very slowly.
I figure it's my incentive to quit.
Yeah I know, a chick**** excuse, "money", but it's better than nothing.
Good luck to all, I'm right behind you.
-
I'm right there with ya Diablo. I refuse to give "lower taxes, smaller government" Rick Perry and the Republican Party an extra dollar out of my pocket.

Whatever works. You don't get extra points for style when it comes to quitting. Just get it done.

First real gain I have seen is that although my wallett is empty four credit card recipts, it reamined about the same weight with the 20 bucks I won on a scratch off today and pocketed instead of buying butts with...whoooa hoooooo!!!!
I'm also noticing my heart rate start to drop. For the past year if I lay flat on my stomache (on my bed), with my ear to the bed, i'd always hear the deep thump thump thump of my heart. Now when I do that it has noticeably dropped which I am happy about.
When I finally get the balls (mentally) to go out drinking and not smoke, two more benifits will be......1- No more butt breath. Only beer =)
2- Cologne will actually last
-
Go for it gents.
Friend of mine tells me that keeping a running total of "Dollars not spent" was a pretty powerful motivator once he got over the initial stir-craziness.
Whatever it takes, guys.
