Title: Anti Virus New McAffee Security center
Post by: DREDIOCK on January 03, 2007, 08:25:17 PM
Get this notification my wifes machine that she is able to get the New McAffe security center. So I figure why not. might as well have the newest and see how it works on hers before switching mine over.

Word to the wise.
Dont do it.

DLed and installed no problem.
Actually works fine.

Cept she started complaining about how slow her system was suddenly running.
This didnt surprise me as she managed to get some 57 proccesses running through various crap she installed for her camera and printer and the stuff she uses for scrapbooking.

So not knowing what each did I fo rthe next couple hours went through one by one and started googling everything.
Kill this one off. Stop that Service. Set the other one to manual. etc etc

Lotta HP stuff I knew she didnt need inasmuch I I just recetnly bought the exact same printer/scanner/photocopyer (HP PSC 1610) Damn nice printer actually

Anyway so I do this and that and finally whittle it down to 44 processes.

the entire time CAffe pops up udating this or that or asking me about changes I've made to the registry etc etc.
Finally Im like. enough of this and I uninstall McAffe and figure I'll go back and get the old version. Which. in the end it seems you cant do. You can only get this new "security suite" or some crap like that

Anyway. I reboot and when the Destop screen pops back up in now record time I just for chuckles hit Ctrl-Alt-Del

28 Processes!

I reinstall Mcaffee thinking maybe there weer double entries or something as I found several entries in the uninstall.
Re boot
44 processes again.
Uninstall
28 Proccesses.

The New McAffee crap  has 16 processes?????
the old one only uses 8 that I can see doing a quick count on this machine

So I cuss a bit and the dogs run and hide and my wife looks at me like I lost my mind. "Screw This"

So here to the boards and this forum I go and do a search

Seems many agree on AVAST being pretty good

So I DL. install no sweat.
Reboots
32 Proccesses

Hell of alot better then 57
And one Hell of alot better then 44

could get it down even lower but I decided to leave some stuff there so as toi make it easier on her to load pictures and stuff without clicking software

Anyway. Hers is now the test machne to AVAST.
should it work well there. The other two machines will be getting the same treament

McAfee, Norton, Symantec, all have become worse than the viruses they are supposed to protect you computer from.  It is a race to see which company can finally take full control away from you, the user.

Afterall, if you remove control of the computer from the user, then there will be no more viruses.  Ta-da!

Avast is good, if you're going to pay for one get Eset Nod32, hands down the best AV I have ever used. It protects the best in independent lab tests & uses less of your PC's resources.

still using Fixit utility's here ... adds 2 processes is it ... ( 3 if you leave autoupdate on )   Uses trend micro definitions still and doesnt interfere with gaming .

I use Antivir and it seems pretty good to me. Also use the symantec personal firewall. Both nice and reasonably light-weight processes that just do what they're suppose to and not every other thing that it doesnt.

Eh.  Ya'll just wait.  ;)

I've been very pleased with AVAST for well over a year now however the testimonials for NOD made me curious so I installed it.  I've been trying it on one PC at home for a few months and so far I like it for the reasons Brenjen mentioned above.

Ok Question.

How to you schedual a scan time.

On the other machines I have them set up to scan daily at 4:00 AM

I do see that option there with AVAST

I run 22 processes with a third party software firewall, Epson printer drivers and antivirus installed (Avast). My laptop runs 33 processes but it has the eye candy bricopacks from crystalxp.net installed. The enhancements add a couple extra processes and there are a few proprietary ones I didnt care to remove.

Just for comparison a F-secure antivirus installation will add 16 extra processes alone + cause really irritating stuff like scan network and drives without reason. The users with latest F-secure installed experience random 'busy' state icon behaviour just sitting at desktop. I can't think of anything more irritating than working on a document and having your pointer flicker at 'busy' state intermittantly.

As a sidenote and warning: few days ago I used the 'starforce driver remover' utility on my sons gaming box. Reboot and boom: No ethernet and applications crashing on RPC errors. XP repair didn't do anything, had to format and reinstall.

Luckily I always partition OS on its own partition. Having learned from that I d/l:ed the no-dvd patch for SHIII and swore never to buy a starforce game again. You know the lamest thing about SF is that some of the current demo installations secretly install it. Nothing beats installing a game demo and having level 0 permanent hardware driver replacements as a result. :aok

I've had good luck with AVG Free.  It doesn't update automagically.  I despise the big AV packages, they trash your machine.

Personally i use Mcafee version 8 with no probs at all, but like all av software it is becoming more and more intrusive you can download a full working updateable version of v8 from most torrent sites or phazeddl u only need to upd8 the virus definition files and not the main program, to find out which processes you can disable safely or set up a profile in windows so that u can switch the processes of for gaming just google black vipers site, it has a tested list for different scenarios on your services.msc interface....its good reading and works a treat

Unless you are actually surfing the net you dont really need av running, i only use it for scanning downloaded files or if im surfing etc.....all ok so far lol

which is down from the 34 which is down from the 36 which is down from the 38 about a year or so ago.
Im getting better at this as I am learning exactly what does what.

Iif and when I switch to AVAST I figure Ill be down to about 26. So Im not all that far behind you

I currently havent had any problems with the version I have on this machine.
But I also use
Ewido AVG anti spyware. Which I I like alot as its picked up a couple trojans McAffe didnt and gotten rid of a trojan McAffe saw but couldnt get rid of.

Its free if you dont mind running it manually now and again after the trial period.
or you can buy it outright

Ewido AVG (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)

Also has a micro scanner you can use.

Skuzzy hit the nail on the head...they are all resource hogs and at best are only mediocre at protection.  I've used AVG for many years and I install it on all of my clients machines...I've never had a virus or trojan problem on any machine where it's installed.  That being said, good habits are the best protection...stay away from those less than reputable sites and never touch a P2P...all will be well.  Note: My AVG free updates daily automatically.

I run XP Pro and after boot have 26 processes running including AVG.  When I game I turn the AVG and some others off and run only 18 processes.

A good tool for seeing whats running and why is msconfig.
