I'm going to test drive one of these tomorrow...(http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/images/smilies/icon9.gif)
Depending on the trade in value they give me, I might be a new owner as well....
I had a chance to spend 20 minutes checking one out offroad earlier in the week....fell in love.

Autoweek stated that very thing in this week's issue. It is thier long term tester and some of the editors love it, others hate it.

:rofl :rofl :rofl
I have many reasons to buy this one, but I have just as many reasons to hold my current car:
Reasons for a FJ:
-Can transport the dog, kids and wife.
-Automatic...wife can drive it (she hates my stick in the BMW, but that's kind of a good thing...cause she never drives my car!)
-Can pull the boat, I won't need the 10 mpg Truck for local boat towing operations.
-Plenty of room in the back (Seats fold down in the rear) for my photo business when I transport the tents, tables, samples and photo equipment.
-I only commute 2 days a week, so gas milege (18 mpg avg.) is not an issue.
-Mileage is getting up there on the BMW.
Reasons to hold the BMW 330ci:
-Dependable as taking a crap the same time every day.
-Great gas milege
-with a tune up, new shocks, new brakes, I'm good for another 90,000 miles.
-I love this car, and the way it drives. Steering still feels like its a new car.
-I still get "looks" and people asking if its a new car.
-My garage has a 4 ft. BMW emblem painted in the interior stall with a carpeted garage.
We'll see....if they don't give me what I want for a trade in, all bets are off...
-
I just paid my 60th and LAST $492 a month payment on on Xterra (had nuthin for trade-in)....I plan to drive it for another 10 years or so--love the thing:aok
-
Rip,
One other thing Autoweek had to say about the FJ was that it required premium fuel.
Something to think about.
Hope you fully enjoy whatever it is you buy :)

A Toyota? Are you going to work for Airbus or something? The Gods of the Blue Oval will smite you.

Its recommended, for towing, or mountainous offroad. Not required. Besides, I already use premium (Required) in the Bimmer.
Thanks Mark!

I like the FJ, but here's another opinion from Car and Driver:http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/10776/2006-hummer-h3-vs-2006-jeep-grand-cherokee-laredo-4wd-vs-2006-nissan-xterra-off-road-4wd-vs-2007-toyota-fj-cruiser-4wd.html
I'd be torn if I were to buy another SUV. I'd have to drive both first. I do like some of the improvements they've made to the 2nd generation Xterras, expecially the Offroad edition with the locking rear diff and the throttle mapping.
That said, I think this FJ looks bad ass.
Rip... FWIW, all the reasons you listed for the FJ can apply to the 2nd gen X, but I hear the X has more room and is easier to enter/exit the rear seats.
I don't think you can go wrong with Toyota or Nissan. After 6+ years, I have no complaints.

Oh... and be sure to get yellow. :aok
-
I guess that is a design you either love or hate. Im afraid its abit too Teletubbies to me so i belong to the latter group. Im sure its fun to drive around in tho. :)

Dont care very much for the paint scheme but that is pretty sweet. They all have white tops correct?

If you're going to spend that much money, why don't you just get the real thing?

A Land Rover Defender is easily twice as expensive as a Toyota FJ.

I think they all have white tops, but not all have that white panel on the side.

This (http://www.latechsupport.net/offroad/Videos/ParadiseExcursion4/FJvsTree_2.wmv) is not the way to drive an FJ.

I just want you to know that the car you are looking at is quite possibly the ugliest car ever. Far surpassing anything gremlin could put out. But where gremlin's ugliness passes into hilarity, that thing does not. It's just painful to look at.

Rip, I think that what Laser meant to say was, "I reject your reality and substitute my own."

I've been browsing through the site that hosted that video (http://www.latechsupport.net/offroad/Videos/). It's lots of the same sort of driving. The guy has three things going wrong for him in most (if not all) of the videos. Wrong tires, heavy pedal, and he's wheeling with the wrong people. The FJ (and the Xterra for that matter) are not in the same class as Jeeps and Land Cruisers. The vehicle cannot do the things that they can do. Trying to push it past its envelope just results in damage.
-
Landrover defender 90 is about 20-40k depending on year and miles.
Unless you're talking about buying a brand new one and having it shipped from over seas. Shouldn't buy brand new anyway, let some other sucker take that hit first.
The old FJ40s were seriously usefull 4x4s. At first glance the looks of the new FJ make me skeptical, it really looks like they're targeting the SUV consumer.
I just can't picture that vehicle beating around africa loaded with UN or NGO personell or game wardens or something.
-
Sandy,
Totally agree with your assessments about "the right tool for the right job". You have to know the limits of your vehicle, and if you don't have some after-market suspension parts, you're probably gonna break something if you go outside that circle of what your vehicle is capable of. I learned the hard way with my 1976 International Scout.
Incidently, here is the update:
I test drove one (again, this time on road, not offroad like my buddies rig) and the thing is pretty peppy. The advertised 0-60 was 7.6 seconds but it felt MUCH quicker than that to me. Doing 70 mph felt like 50 mph. Very smooth ride.
The dealer wouldn't give me close to even a fair dealer trade in for my BMW. I put it up for sale in Craigs list, and I have two people interested within 4 hours of posting. One is coming out Tue to look at the car.
If I sell it within 7 days, I'll order the FJ Cruiser (or have a dealer find one within the area from other dealerships that matches the customized vehicle I want) If I don't sell the BMW, I'll just keep it for another 88,000 miles.
Oh, and I would prefer a stick but the wife whine rating was 9.5 (she can drive a stick, but prefers auto) so I succumbed to deciding on an automatic. I really like the fact that you can lock in the rear differential when in 4WD.(basically, posi-traction)

I'm only spending $12,000 for the new rig (after the difference from what I expect to get for the BMW) What you're talkking about is a $60k+ vehicle with that Landrover!

No way do you get anything for 1200.

Is it by chance, yellow?
If not, take it back.

"Sun Fusion" is my choice.:aok I absolutely HATE yellow (or "Sun Fusion" in this case) except when it comes to 4WD vehicles. Just a personality quirk. :)

A most excellent choice. :)

Hehe... let's compare 12 year old apples to 12 year old apples. :)

doesn't look like any in those vids are using mud tires.

BUT, that D90 is quite possibly the most capable 4WD vehicle ever to grace Planet Earth. A shame the Airbag constraints ended US Imports in 1997.
FJ's need HEAVY MODIFICATION to go off road. The lifts alone approach $2,000-$3,000 for accommodating 35" tires which seems to be the target lift these days.
The resale on the D90's are also probably greater than any other vehicle built in the last 25 years.
-
Don't get me wrong... I'd love to have a D90. :)
-
The D90 would not even come close to what I need.
I need an SUV. Big enough to carry the dog, hunting gear and a couple of boys. I need a daily driver for grocery getting and commuting twice a week. I need something I can drive in the snow, have the ability to pull a boat and get better mileage than an F250 460ci engine.
A D90 is overkill IMO.
Anyway, the FJ really attracts me, both price, and its exterior/interior looks.
I've already got 4 people interested in the BMW and will most likely sell it within the week. Then I'll drive my truck for a few months while I shop around for a replacement vehicle. It may or may not be an FJ Cruiser, but I hope it will be.
-
I can say the same thing about Jeeps. I keep looking at them, but they can't come close to carrying the amount of stuff I put into the Nissan... unless I go with a Cherokee, and I'm not interested in those at all.

When all is said and done and the money goes down, can't beat silver/titanium/gray/dark gray for serious vehicle.

On the other hand a dark grey vehicle tends to blend into the background and be harder for the other drivers to see.

My wife said "Buy any color you'd like, its your honey...but I can't stand yellow". I want her to like the color, and titanium (silver, gray) was the only color we could agree on. She liked the black cherry, but my arthritis started murmuring just thinking about keep that color in good shape.
The titanium will be easy to care for, compared to a dark color.
So..Yellow was my primary choice until she told me how she felt about it, so I went to my 2nd choice. :aok
-
When it comes to visibility, the most invisible to me is dark green. In shadows or at night, harder for me to see dark green than even gray or black.
It's interesting too how some designs and colors go much better together than others. We had a 1997 Olds 88 that looked great in teal green but awful in white or silver, colors that we usually like. Some colors just go better with certain designs, but I can't figure out why.
