Hey guys, being the guy that I am, I barely know anything about skinning. I've made a skin or two before, but I just don't know enough to make a skin with noticeable details.
Someone popped into my arena about a week ago (RAIDER14) and asked me if I finished my new airport terrain yet. It's a trend that's been around a while in the 8-Player community. Someone hosts the room, and they play virtual airport, except with WWII planes.
Anyways, I've been working on my airport terrain and Raider wanted to know if I had completed it yet. After I told him, "No, I haven't" he asked me if I could make an American Airlines skin for the C-47. Of course hearing this I laughed at the idea. Yet it did seem rather interesting. Although AA was not around during that time period, people would have more fun flying around in a bird that has an airline skin on it.
So I'm wondering if anyone here could make an American Airlines skin for the C-47. Full credit would go to you in the terrain. Here are some pictures for you to see half of the project:

hwy now, this looks interesting, i suck i skining, so i can't hlp ya, but i am rly looking forward to the completion of this terrain:aok
-
No worries, I'll post an announcement on the completion of this terrain in the TE forum and the Free Multiplayer forum.
And yes, this terrain is a project being handled by USRanger and me.
-
Well, I found three different textures for an American Airlines DC-3, yet their not what I was after. I wanted something a bit more modern, so I chose this:

What do you think? I already have the textures.
-
:lol awesome!
-
I think I'll start on trying to re-size and place the textures. Hopefully I get 'em all right. Cause that will look awesome!
And for the pro's who want to be correct, yes, I know it won't be as shiny, I just want the exterior to somewhat resemble what is in that photo.
-
There are lots of commercial schemes for DC-3's. TCA (Trans Canada Airlines, predecessor of Air Canada) flew them. Just google and you will find lots. BOAC also operated Mossies.
-
This all reminds me of when we used to play Airline in AH-1.
-
That's precisely what i did Target. Here is a progress report, yes, I know, I'm terrible!

And how is this relative to the topic?
-
If you find me a profile of the skin you want to make i could do it.
-
I have a download with the skin textures that I want to apply to the C-47. They almost match precisely, except I'm not too good with re-sizing, here's the link to download:

how do you modify the airfield
show me your ways master
-
Yes protoge, you go to the linky, and clicky on the linky:

-
thank you master i will try not to fail you
ok enough with the jedi and padawan act
when do you usually host things with this rpg kinda thing
cause i love that type of thing
-
That texture is under copyright and other yadayada.I know it's silly but i won't be doing it after that.So i'll be using this pic to work on it:

It relates, cause HiTech will not allow an American Airlines Skin into AH.
The picture is from Flight Sim. X

i didnt see in the guide how to set up taxi ways or pads for the hangers to sit on
or how to edit the runway color
Qu'est Que C'est

Didn't see that, good observation. Either way I'm still giving full credit for the skin.
RATTFINK, thanks for the info, I wasn't planning on submitting the skin, just using it. That's something Hitech can't stop, cause when maps go into H2H, they just keep re-appearing.
And nick, it only tells you how to make your custom fields, not custom objects. Custom objects is something you must learn on your own using AC3D.

darn
i have a trial of that but i look at the icon on my desktop and start to get a headache
know of any tutorials on this program

He does not want to submit the skin. Hes talking about including (ie building) it into a Terrain to be used in H2H Arenas - its the only way skins can be used in free player mode.
HiTech doesnt monitor the H2H arenas/skins/terrains.... heck, i once flew in "gay land".... lotsa brightly colored graffity painted textures on the terrain (as ground) and a purlple sky.....

The only ones I can think of would be found on their forums. I have not seen any posted on the AH BB's. AC3D is at the mercy of your learning skill and the ability to conceive knowledge about the 3-D editor from other terrain designers.
EDIT: You could use the Blender ( http://www.blender.org ). It's 100% free and it's what I used.

:D y not make ur own "airline" skin :D
-
I thought I'd give this one a go, as I've already got a C-47 template, still needs the writing and logos. One problem is that as its an old format skin there is no material file, so I can't make it glossy. Also everything on the skin apart from the vertical stab and fuselage nose is mirrored left to right, so some of the writing is going to be mirror imaged on one side of the fuselage. All four wing panels will have to have the big AA logo, instead of having the serial numbers on alternate wings.

Denholm, funny you asked, I made a C 47 Military transport command plane, made post war so was of no use, but I thought it looked cool. Maybe a bit of twweaking and It would look good as a Airliner. If you want screenies, let me know.
-
Greebos skin looks better, so you should take that one once it's finished.:)
Good job Greebo!
-
Greebo, if you can write the "AA" on it, please do, since I'm no good with editing using MS Paint. And macleod, yes I would like to see some screenies.
One other question, I'm not sure if any of you know, yet I'm wondering if its possible to enter two C-47 skins into the same terrain, so that one is default, and the next is in the drop-down menu / list. Remember, it's an 8-Player terrain, so you can't just make your own skin and apply it like you do in the MA.
-
You can only put 1 skin per plane.
-
looks like its between Greebo and me, and chances are Greebo's won! This was just a first skin I ever did, so apologies if its crap!
-
As promised, here are the screenshots

Lovely:aok

I've finished the American Airlines DC-3 skin. It can be downloaded at the Aces High Skin Department (http://www.ah-skins.com/).

-
Thanks greebo, should I print credit out as "Greebo" or something else. And macleod, for being the first skin you ever made, that's a heck of a lot of detail, nice work!
-
Thanks Denholm. The second I saw Greebo's completed skin, I knew he'd got it. Wtg Greebo, brilliant work. Looks fantastic!:aok
-
Thanks guys, glad you like the skin. It made a nice change of pace from military skins. I'm thinking of doing a Reno racing Corsair next, just for fun.
Macleod, you might want to move the fuselage insignia down a few pixels, to avoid the banding on top of the fuselage.
Greebo will be fine on the credits thanks Denholm.
-
Will do Greebo. Anything else? Id quite like to get it looking really good
-
Alrighty, I will post that. Thanks again.
-
Its a bit difficult to see enough detail macleod. Try zooming in on the aircraft before you take the screenshots. Then in your graphics program crop the image to reduce its size, like I've done with mine.
Having said that, I can see a few things that don't look quite right. The black leading edge on the wing looks very ragged and possibly a bit too wide. Also the orange wingtips seem a bit fuzzy where they meet the grey.
The D Day stripes below the fuselage, are these correct or a legacy from the default skin?
You could also add a shadow effect behind the engine cowl flaps to give them a 3D effect.
-
SMEG! Never even noticed that! DRAT And Double DRAT!

i know rhis quote is old but Denholm, mind hosting that when ur donw with that map:D
-
HA thats cool....
The airport and the C-47
-
you should make huge town surrounding airport
-
yea and the host can make alot of fog or wind to make flying even harder..and frendly collisions on :D
(http://aviation-central.com/famous/images/abp20-dx.jpg)
this would be a cool design to attempt to put on the C-47:D
-
Just so you guys know, yes, I will be hosting this terrain when it is completed. I host under these types of settings:
Views: Unlimited viewing possibility
Fog Visibility Miles: 2, this makes it difficult to see the end of the airstrip from one end. I know, I've tried it. This makes you more reliable on the ATC to control ground traffic to prevent collisions.
Windage: 0K-6K 10 MPH. 6K-10K 20 MPH. 10K and onwards: 50 MPH.
So, It's very challenging landing, especially with that wind and fog, and that's why I'm going to be painting traffic patterns all the way to the runway on your clipboard maps. That way you will be able to fly right up to the runways.
-
Yay:D

-
