Title: To the ww2ol crowd
Post by: AKWeav on January 12, 2007, 07:13:49 AM
Played the game some 3-4 years ago, thought Id give it another shot, so signed up for the 30 day free trail. Lo and behold, the playnet host crashes on startup, and as usual, the cornerd rats are no where to be found for assistance. And with the trial account, I cant post on the forums there in hopes of help from the player base.

Dont seem much has changed since the last go round:rofl

I signed in for the '30 day free trial sponsored by xyz' only to find out that after I gave e-mail etc. information I was directed to a credit card verification screen. Knowing the rats reputation I quickly declined the honor.

Luckily the info I gave them was fake and the e-mail my spam hotmail account. Somehow I could expect a scam.

I gave them a spam email account, and used my old prepaid credit card. So if they want to keep billing there isnt anything on there anyway. Their game sucks anyway. Kept crashing less then 30 seconds after I spawned, and the graphics were so bad it made my eyes hurt.

I too tried a month to see whats new.

There are a few new things.
New weapon models, some new buildings. 6 years later and they finally made grenades roll and not explode on impact. LMGS can now be deployed on surfaces other than the ground. Memory leaks. Same FPS hits.

In the end it's still a terd. A 1999 game that was limited to begin with.

Hopefully some investors come around and take the idea, create a modern gaming engine and make the game WW2OL was supposed to be.

The game concept is great. We can always dream. I wish it was better.

HTC's next project????

Anyone know how big their player base is?  I played 2-3 years ago as well and was a little less than impressed.

Anyone try Planetside?  Same thing just futuristic rather than historic.  I'm guessing they have more capital than WW2OL.

Well I just recently stopped playing WW2OL in favor of AH2. I have been playing WW2OL off and on since it came out about 7 years ago. It is an extremely realistic and unforgiving game. It has definitely improved a lot over the years and can be really fun, if you have a beefy computer.

The tank combat is still the best I have played in any game and the infantry play isn't too bad either once you get the hang of it, although the graphics are dated.

And while it is fun strafing a bunch of British troops in an open field in an Me-109, the flight models in the game are really awful. Unless you have a near top of the line computer, you are probably going to have severe FPS hits when flying over major combat and big cities. Add to that the horrible features/bugs, like if the person you just shot down de-spawns ("towers" in AH speak) before he hits the ground (10 second timer to de-spawn), you don't get a kill.

There are usually about 600-700 people on during peak hours IIRC.

I used to play that game since it was release in may of 2003 around spring till summer  2005.  Sony implemented a lot of new things, but it is pretty much just CS on a larger scale.  Sony refuses to take the player base's suggestion of just upgrading the core game and fixing the existing bugs, adding new vehicles such as the BFR's (which ruined the game for me), they have yet to redesign base layouts like they said they would 2 years ago.  If they reverted the game back to the way it was at release or right after they release the low count empire variant vehicles I would return, but they have yet to take their heads out of their prettythang and be smart about their game.  Because of declining subcription numbers they have had to turn to in-game advertisments as well and I hear they are very annoying.

WW2OL I tried for a day on the free account, took about 2 weeks to get my account set up because I had to figure it out for myself, game sucked, took too long ot load seemed over complicated as well.

I know some people who worked at SOE in San Diego. Let's just say that is a ship that is sinking - and fast. They all quit en masse and left for greener pastures. And they were all developers. They are bleeding cash from the utter and total fiasco that was Star Wars the MMORPG. Worst.... MMORPG....evar. That cost them bigtime.

HTC has it right. Keep it small, keep it moving - make the base game at its very core a fun thing to play. Take your time, get it right.

Blizzard hit it out of the park with WoW. 8 million subscribers two weeks ago. Do the math. That's a helluva of cash flow. That's a re-arrange the industry hit. Blizzard was a 3rd tier, maybe a 2nd tier house before WoW. Now they look down at just about anybody, EA and Sony included.

If you played recently it was probably the worst time to play. CRS rushed a patch out before Xmas that had more bugs in it than a starship troopers movie. End result game was crap for about 3-4 weeks (I think the finally fix for the xmas bugs is due next week).

I still play a lot. Mainly for the squad stuff though, I play with a squad called 3rd Panzer who are great bunch of guys (reminds me of my Mag-33 experiences with ripsnort). But their numbers online are low at the moment so I'm wavering towards the unsub button.

The airware blows, FMs, DMs, visibility, the 109s wobble... you name it. But the ground war can be loads of fun (no bunnyhopping!).

However as of late things in AH have me back here. This weekend I finally got my headset tweaked out, not only does the headtracking work nicely I managed to get 3D stereoscopic going as well... and AH looks beaultiful in it.

Who do you know there?  I probably know them since I used to work at SOE for 5 years before moving on to another game company.

SWG was a place I enjoyed going and spending time (and money).  That was before the combat upgrade.  Yet I tried to hang in there and was managing ok....then the NGE came along and absolutely destroyed the total experience for me.

fediddle SOE forEVAR

As far as WW2ol is concerned....I never fully bought into CRS and waited to hear  the reviews.  The reviews were never very good.

I never tried and I never think about it until one of these threads comes along then I am reminded that I am glad I never tried it.

Those were the days :)  I remember when you shot up half of our own B-17 formation trying to kill an Me-262 :P

My best memory ever was jumping the 56th who were all low slow and heavy in niki's after refueling. I was in a hawg-d, I got 12 kills that round.

Oh... and the time you were leading a MA mission and went off to shag your missus with us all following your plane off the map.

SWG was fun for about 8 months then there was nothing to do once you maxxed your character.  Then the remakes and that was all she wrote.

I've been subscriber for Planetside for like 3 years or more. It has lots of analogous elements with AH: STEEP learning curve, invidual skill domination,  no RPG elements, doesent require any grinding whatsoever. Its the only gameplay orientated MMOFPS that has ever existed and seems like its going to stay that way for years to come. Oh and its free of charge nowdays (free accounts do have some limitations).

Thats why i like it so much.  Plus it has rifles and guns, no sheeps tho..:)

What?  Free?  Might have to check it out again.  Played in the beta phase and thought the model was better than WWIIOL, which was why I mentioned it in this thread.

Hey all,

Well I'll try and give you an unbiased account of WW2OL

About a year ago I tried both this game and WW2OL and I chose WW2OL.  Lemme tell you why.

The Air Side of the combat game was what brought me to both here and there.  I was an old Aces High player from back in the day and decided to find some way of killing time now like I used to back then.  I did a search for Online Flight Combat and it linked me to both here and there.

I tried Aces High first (2 weeks) and it was a lot of fun.  I met some excellent people and the play was super challenging.

After the two weeks I tried the "other" one (for a month... I had to sign up for a month - they have free trials now but not then).  The air war was not as "polished" and the graphics were a bit dated BUT.

However, I really enjoy(ed) the fact that the WW2OL was focused on historical simulation in that it was Germany Versus the BEF and French Forces.  It was uncomprimisiing in its dedication to not perfectly blanacing everyting but rather letting each side USE the stuff it used.  Also, the combined warfare game is excellent.  I play the ground side alot and use voice comms to speak with pilots and naval folks and coordinate attacks and support.  I am in a squad and we have folks who "specialize" in all areas.
The models for the equipment are decent enough and service the intent of the game (which is to create an "atmosphere" of the war).

The graphics are a bit dated (and not as pretty as AH2) but when you consider that you can zoom in from 20000 ft on a bombing run to the individual soldier at 6 feet you have a lot to model there (you have to have "servicable" terrain at all levels - this means you may be a bit uglier then you would want).

It is far from perfect in many ways but I find it to be a lot more sophisticated of a game from a "whole game" pespective.  You can jump in a fighter and mix it up in the air one minute and then help defend a strongpoint as a rifleman the next. (not to mention the naval war, the tank war or the strategic war)

There are some bugs (for sure) as the code is old and they are trying to push it to the limit and the gameplay is very challenging (how many times can you get killed without "understanding why" before you get frustrated? - but don't forget ...much of war is spent muttering WTH to yourself) but there is a very deep game and a very dedicated  player base.  There is a good support system (online) and the developers do active participate in solving problems (I have seen the lead dev in the game on several occasions trying stuff out).

If anyone wants to try the game they should give it 1-2 months for evaluation and use the chat rooms.  Also, linking up with a squad is always helpful and certainly try all sides (raise your hand if you ever desired to Command a Tiger Tank... and I am a BEF player!)

Anyway, I am not here to advertise but I wanted to chime in.

Hope you are all doing well and happy flying!
