Maybe add the ability to dive to kill an engine fire.
-
wouldn't using the onboard fire suppression system, cutting the fuel, and feathering the prop be a tad bit more realistic....as well as steps you'd take, prior to going into a wing-ripping-off dive?
-
Diving was indeed one of the measures one would take to put out an engine fire. Cutting the mixture was the first, but you bet your posterior that you don't wait to see if that stops it before you dive. Feathering doesn't affect fires and most aircraft don't have on-board fire detection and extinguishing devices.
Right now the problem with fires in the game isn't limited to the permanence but rather the infrequency. Fire should be the primary cause of aircraft loss. Right now, it's the very least common cause in the game.

Either option would be cool.

My grandpa had an engine fire, in I beleive a B-26. It was in a test program, so enemy fire wasnt a question. How did he put it out? Cut fuel. Still burned. How did he finally put it out? He dived and got a enough air whipping through to put it out.
Having heard this story as a child, imagine my suprise when I got an engine fire in my No. 2 on a B-17G, immidiately turned the engine off, and put the plane into a dive, only to rip the wings off before the damned thing went out!

Lol... Someones been watching too much Memphis Belle.
-
I seem to kill most and lose most bombers due to fire, just me though.

Someone doesnt read history much. ;)

Yes, I guess non-fiction books were never my stronghold.

If the engine fire was forward of the firewall you would have been able to dive to put it out, after shutting off fuel. If it was aft of the fire wall, better to bail as soon as possible. Don't think AH has modeled firewalls yet.

100% true. But in the game, it would be cool to have an option other than watching the fire and wondering how long till I blow up. :) Not a showstopper by any means, just an adition to an already great game.

well IMO i love watching flaming planes kind of like the 4th of July :O

And some should be able to figure out what the difference is between
Warbirds ( watermelon ) and AcesHigh ( Shineola) ..... :t

Yes, I guess that's relevant. Oh, wait. We were comparing Aces High II and reality, not Aces High and Warbirds.

He sure is, and he still flys....in RL and virtually. About a year ago, he got to fly an SBD (I believe) and had a bunch of pics posted. I saved a few really good ones. I'll post them if I can find them.

If Benny Moore had his way, we'd all need USB sock heaters and they would burn our feet when our planes caught on fire. ;) :D :D :D

I did that on pacific fighters once. Lol, that would just be awesome :aok

Getting back on topic it'd be handy to get engine fires before we worry about putting them out.
We currently have fuel tank fires only.
