Title: Any French speaking people here?
Post by: Brenjen on January 15, 2007, 11:58:46 AM
I need something translated & I can't quite make out what babel fish translates it as. Could anyone here translate this into English, I think the intent of the message is being lost in translation.

"bjr
je suis desole pour l'achat ne correpond pas a mes demandes en plus vous mettez la merde en irak"

This person won an auction for a CPU I was selling on E-bay & I have the feeling they bid with the full intention of not paying because of the Iraq war. It's pretty silly because, it just causes those of us who feel no ill will towards France to stop allowing them to bid on items.

Any help getting the actual language & spirit of the message translated into English would be greatly appreciated.

He's sorry but not going to pay and demand we stop the "****" in Iraq...

I think..

I admit, my french is bit rusty..

"I am sorry, but the auction doesnt fit my needs, and you also caused the mess in Irak"

The second part comes off a bit stronger in English ("****") if translated literally than a French speaker would mean it.

report to ebay that the winner of the bid refuses to close the deal. It has cost you money to put that item on ebay.

"I'm sorry that what I purchased doesn't correspond to my needs, also because you're stirring up crap in Iraq".

"If you Americans would just learn from our history and surrender, you wouldn't be in Iraq."

I would have translated but thank to some cretins I'm not in the mood any more.

You're on your own.

That's what I got out of it, or the closest thing to what I thought it meant with the stronger four letter word in place of crap

All of you that responded with a translation, I appreciate it.

For john9001; I really don't need an Ebay tutorial lol, I just needed to be sure I wasn't taking something out of this message that wasn't really there. I want to be fair with the person even though it's clear they had no intention of being fair with me. From now on I'll have to block foreign bidders, it's too bad really, I just sold a CPU to a very nice person in the Netherlands. I'd hate to think they would've been screwed by someone like this dolt from France. And besides, you can't open an unpaid item dispute for a certain number of days & I haven't gone past that yet; rest assured I sent the text of the message & a complaint directly to Ebay. The jerk-off will probably put a negative on my otherwise spotless feedback record as well.:cry

What the heck did I do to you? Yet another French person is mad at me for something that I have no clue about? What do they put in your water over there?:huh

What make you think you're included in the list ?

IMHO john9001 got it right, there is nothing related to the Iraq war,he's just a dork.

Btw the sentence is strangely build it's not surprising babelfish puked on it.
Depending on the intent of the original writer there is at least 3 possibles translations (missing word make translating hard :))

I thought that because it was me asking for help that was declined, not someone else. The sentence was copied directly from the email & I assumed there was slang or some written tone that a native French speaking person would catch & understand that a mechanical translator wouldn't & as I mentioned above, I want to be fair with this person & I was afraid I was confusing the actual intent of the message.

I thought just by looking at it without translation on babelfish & not speaking any French at all that what the person said was; "They demand I have no further correspondence with them because of the murder in Iraq"

I hoped that was incorrect & ran it through babelfish, which as you said...puked on it. And I do not, above all else, want to have a problem with this person over a mis-communication. That wouldn't be fair & I'm all about fair.

Some of the problems babelfish had with it were probably because of misspellings/contractions.  For instance, "bjr" is short for 'Bonjour', and I bet 'correpond' was 'correspond'.  Anyhow, he's saying "turns out I don't need it, btw, I'm going to try and make this political so it'll seem as if I'm making a bold stand against imperialist USA instead of just backing out on a transaction like a little jerkie."  That's the next level of translation, the meta message.

Well I must say I've trouble reading it in French as well.

That's very far from the original message.
My best attempt ended with :

"I am sorry for the purchase, it not does not fit my need, also you're messing Iraq."

Note that I had to add some words and punctuation .

Chairboy got the meta message quite right :aok

Straffo, do me a favor. If you meet anyone in France that is a developer or writes code for Enovia LCA, slap them and tell them its from "Ripsnort" who has to report bugs in their code on a daily teleconference with Dassault. Thanks!
