Post by: JB88 on January 16, 2007, 09:16:56 PM
being rejected by jewel is like having a hot chick ninja assassin sneak up behind you and cut your throat....sure, she's pulling here blade through your larinx and sure your lifeforce is draining out in rivers to your chest...but it smells really nice.

she did.

so the question remains:  is she hotter with or without the northward buckies?

Did I spell that right?  I hate seeing misspelled words and then not remembering how to spell them correctly.

Jewel will always be hot, no matter how much she looks like she grew up in England.

I say the people on Idol and the german DSDS equivelent are there for my entertainment and it is perfectly ok to laugh as they are shattered on national TV. The Missus says thats wrong and I am a very mean man. What do you gentleman think.

Jewel is hot.

I hate seeing people hurt, emotionaly, especialy on TV or in front of a crowd. I feel their pain too much I guess. One reason I refuse to watch those things.

I play guitar.

It's my greatest passion, hobby wise.

But I suck at it.

It'd be foolish of me to enter any audition or competition thinking that I could win.

It's amazing these people that are told "no" have no idea how bad they are.

I feel for the people that had their dreams shattered but it had to happen sometime.  It's not like they have no idea that a camera is there recording them.

do you suck at it because you have to, or because you havent dedicated enough of your time and energy toward that goal.

i mean.  if seline dion can do it...

i think you should go for it diablo.

you know you want to.

It's called recognizing a lack of talent.

Saxophone came very, very easy for me.  Guitar, however, hasn't been anywhere near as easy.

why not go with sax then?

A case of desire being the inverse of talent.
Title: american idol observation
Post by: JB88 on January 17, 2007, 12:22:07 AM
ah.  nice way of putting it.  you probably do have to really want it...but then that only serves to make me wonder if desire is enough to make up half of the equasion for entertainment success.

i kept wondering if some of the people were there just to screw with the panel.

they must be.

I had a couple of aces in my hand; 2 older brothers that were capable of picking up virtually any instrument and learn it thus teaching my what to do.  Second, my first sax was actually a pro instrument - the Selmer Mk. VI, considered by some the finest alto sax made.  So while my competition was as technically as good as I was, or even better, their tone sucked because they had Bundy's and Conn's (student instruments).  I was never good at sight reading, but I had a really good vibrato and tone.  When I got out of the Navy and went to JC I earned a full ride on playing sax in the jazz band, both alto and bari.  Now THOSE were some fun times...fun times indeed.

I don't feel too bad for those who obviously haven't prepared more than singing in the shower or dressing up wierd, but occasionally one or more of the judges will be in a pissy mood and just crap all over someone who actually has some talent and who has made an honest effort to be a professional singer, and I think that really reflects poorly on the judges.  It's totally unprofessional behavior and I think those contestants, the ones who really do show up prepared, deserve a little courtesy.

The fact that they don't get it is why I watch the show to see the contestants and I pretty much ignore what the judges and hosts say.  As Pooh says, it's an entertainment show and different people are entertained by different things.  I am personally not entertained by people acting poorly or disrespectfully towards others who have earned, or made an honest effort to earn, some respect.

It's the same reason why I'll give 100% respect and professional courtesy to the worst student pilot I fly with even if he sucks and tries to kill me, as long as he's trying.  If some guy shows up, sucks, doesn't try, hasn't prepared, or tries to displace blame for his lack of ability onto me, then he will not get any respect or courtesy from me beyond the bare minimum required by military regulations.

I try to follow those rules regardless of who the audience is, and it's frankly embarassing to watch the idol judges act so poorly towards certain constestants.  But disrespectful behavior is the "in thing" right now in the US so the show producers are going to go with what works.  Me, I'll watch it for the singing and ignore the judges because they quite often act in a manner that I consider to be shameful.

what did you listen too?

personally I own all of her albums, and think "This Way" is the best overall, though "Spirit" has some quite good songs too.

I would say "Spirit" is the most "adult contemporary" style of hers, "This Way" the quazi-rock album, "Pieces" the true folk album,  "0304" the pop album, "Alice" the newest is sort of a cross between "Spirit" and "Pieces"

They had some "shorts" of some of her songs just to give you a "feel" of what she sounded like. She sounds young to me, probably due to my age, and there is a quality in her voice that bugs me a little. She seems to be the entertainer though.

she's 33, got her start as a yodeler in alaska with her father at 9 years old, as an entertainer, the fe live clips I have seen (never have gotten the chance in person) she is truly a showman.

her following is mostly teenage girls who write poetry though.

I'm watching the show right now, and 1/3rd of the way through it doesn't seem too unusual.  Simon is actually being fairly reasonable but then again there is still another hour to go in the show for him to lose it and start acting like his usual idol-persona.

I felt sorry for Jewel... She seems to be taking it seriously (maybe due to having her own show?) but she has to balance what she *really* wants to say with the fact that she is a public figure herself and she does have a nice-girl image to protect.  On occasion I could tell she really wanted to tell the contestants that they suck and had a terrible attitude, but she seemed to stick with stuff like "that wasn't good". She didn't sugar coat it, but it looked like she did hold back a bit.

Hmmm.

The navy guy actually got real advice from Randy and Jewel.  That's unusual.  Last year I don't recall any contestants getting any kind of productive advice at the mass-screening level, at least not any that made the show.

Maybe this year's show will be a bit different than the bickering and snide remarks last year?

Still watching...

Hey, it won't be "American Idol" until we get a drunk Paula, a condescending Simon and a "I played bass and sang backup for Journey, yo!" comment from Randy.

Almost done with the show, and so far only one girl "Sarah" (sang somewhere over the rainbow) seems to have a *really* good voice.

Tough show.  Not very many guys with any hint of a great voice so far.  A couple of decent voices that probably just need a good voice coach, especially with a couple of the younger contestants, but only that girl Sarah really seems to have it together already.

I can't believe I'm missing UFC to watch Idol... Damn AFN schedulers can't get it right :)

They just wrapped a Minnesota tour, and throgh a friend one of her friends got PWNED on national television. She said he got set up, and usually, the lower judges send off some of the better talent, and allow the bad singers to move to the next part, by telling them they are actually really good.

So, when Simon get to them, and tears them to pieces, the singers are pretty surprised when they get berated. They pretty much get led on just so people can laugh at them later.

I know I suck at singing, regardless of what someone tells me, I guess others are more naive. In any event, it's a pretty rotten thing to do to someone who is serious about their dreams.
