Title: Another Frame Rate problem
Post by: Texdog on March 15, 2000, 12:28:00 AM
I have a Compaq Presario AMD-K6 3D Processor. I have 64mb of Ram. My video card is a ES 1869. Im only getting 15fps at the highest. Im using the 800X600 video resolution and 16 bit. I have updated my video drivers and still only 15fps. Anyone have suggestions?

I better correct myself right quick. My video card is a RAGE LT PRO AGO 2X with 4MB of Mem.

I don't know if you will see much of an improvement given the CPU and graphics card you have.  The K6 has a weak FPU math unit that flight-sims like AH depend on, and the video card is no speed deamon either.

I think your best move would be to use <cntrl><c> to toggle clutter off, and play with your view ranges to increase framerate.  Also, try different resolutions.  I don't know if your card can do 1024x768, but if it can, give it a shot.  That resolution is actually a tiny bit faster than 800x600 for me.  If that doesn't work, try 640x480, as that should run better for you.

Im also seeing poor frame rates didnt know ctrl c   turns clutter off will try that right now im getting 23 or so  fps up in the air alone close to ground I drop to 14 or so but view still looks smooth not choppy .

whats the commands to change from far medium close views ?

I have a cyrix 366 stealth 2000 vid card 2 meg  with a monster2 3d accelerator 12 meg running the latest drivers i could find  and 32 megs of ram set virtual mem to use 110 meg of space so its all in one place not fragmented same fps
also nuthing except systray and explorer.exe running in background

you guys are getting better fps than my
PIII 500
nVIDIA 16 MEG TNT
128 MEGS RAM
13 GIG SCSI
WIN98
i have all the latest drivers and
dx 7.0a
on the runway in P51 ground clutter OFF
Front view = 23 fps
back view  = 18 fps
left view  = 22 fps
right view = 23 fps
up view    = 101 fps
you tell me why i get such a large difference
in the up view. i know there is nothing there to render but why such a drastic change.

This is not a fix that you guys want, but it might help until you get one.

Try using Alt-F1, Alt-F2 or Alt-F3 in the game.  This clips how far out graphics are drawn.  Looks funky has heck, but might allow you to play until you get your problems resolved.

BTW I believe the N1K2 George has about the best frame rate.  Try it, at least you can fly maybe.

Good Luck!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Boy am I glad I bought genuine intel!

Had a stick spikeing problem (throttle)
& installed DX7.0a on Kieren's advice.

Picked up a solid 10 fps on my P2 266, mmx,
8m AGP (i740 chipset)

Just somethine else for you guys to try

Yes, Dx7a helps a lot.  (I too ran an Intel i740 until this week, when I upgraded to a v770 ultra.  That doubled my fps.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) I had continual driver problems with that Intel card, even though I have an intel MB, intel processor, intel ... you get the point.)

As for the Cyrix 366, it actually does run at 233 MHz, believe it or not.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)  The 366 rating was based on Cyrix testing versus PII chips on specific benchmarks.

Fortunately, in this game, all you need is about 15 - 20 fps to play without any major problems.

Here's what I've heard about that you can do to increase system performance: update drivers, use Dx7a, defrag, set your virtual memory manually, select "network server" under system in control panel, get more Ram, and get rid of the extra stuff that runs in the background. I also got a couple more fps by getting a vortex 2 soundcard (pci) versus my old Yamaha 715 based card (isa).  If your motherboard can take it, cyrix, AMD, and celeron processors are getting pretty cheap too. (check pricewatch.com)

I hope some of this will help.

I can't really add much to the advice that's already been given, other than to make sure you're not running any other apps in the background while playing AH.

Rickod in answer to your system recognizing the wrong processor try flashing the bios in your motherboard

Weird, is this a general problem..?
I'm running a dual PII 350 under windows 2000 with 256 ram and a Geforce 256.
Under 1024 x 786, 32 bit with hires textures, I always have a framerate between 40 and 50. And AH doesnt even support win2k.

Cryix rates speed a bit different. Your chip probably runs as fast as an Intel 366 running an app such as MS Office and so Cryix says it's a 366. But actually runs at a slower mhz. I have an older Cryix 200 (no not running AH  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) ) and it's true speed is 150 mhz.
