Title: Skuzzy! HELP! What should i put in a new box?
Post by: TEShaw on January 22, 2007, 02:23:35 PM
My beautiful computer which has delivered thousands of kills has now officially flopped.

The failure is either motherboard or CPU.

During the last repair, the local computer monkeys said 'don't put anymore money in this box.'

That box was big and hot and good.

SO......

What's the deal with Aces High vs. dual core processors vs. Vista?

I'm not bragging; but, money is no object. What sort of machine should I build with whatever 'core' and Vista, and whatever RAM , and does Aces High even work with Vista, if Vista is even available, or do I wait two weeks, or what?

regards, TEShaw

I know you're asking skuzzy, but my suggestion is that you don't use Vista. I hear it's double-packed with bugs. Go with a more secure version of Windows, such as 2000, or if you have to and want to use XP, go with XP Proffesional.

Vista is not officially released until sometime in may i belive (i don't know if this is Canada alone or everywhere)

since u say "money is no object" id say build ur own computer, if u kno what ur looking for you can make a better comp than you can find on the market.  JMO
(go AMD too! :aok)

Vista is to be released on January 30th in the US... My company is a Microsoft Certified Partner so we got the final release that will be available in stores last Thursday.

I have installed it and played with it quite a bit and it's not NEAR as buggy as the beta versions were... in fact, I'd say that it SEEMS less buggy than XP was when it was release. The only problem is that you'll need to double check and make sure Vista drivers are available for all pieces of hardware before you purchase them. I haven't been able to crash Vista yet but I'll post something in this thread if I find anything else.

Unless you just want to waste money on hardware to get the same peformance as an XP manchine can deliver, I would not install Vista.

There is nothing the OS offers which XP cannot do and do with less trouble.

If money is no object, start with the Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 CPU.  I would not bother with any quad core CPU's.  They are more about marketing than performance.

If he is wanting the best performance, he is better off with the Core Duo CPU.

Using a Core Duo over an AMD?  Absolutely.  AMD does not have anything that will run close to the performance of the X6800 CPU.  And it does not appear AMD will be able to catch Intel at all this year.

It is going to be a rough year for AMD.

what about the new Omperon, or is that processor aimed toward server comps?

Server class CPU which competes against the new Xeon.  And the new Xeon is also out performing the Opteron, by a considerable margin.

AMD will be behind the performance curve for at least the next year, and if Intel does manage to get thier new 45nm CPU's out by the end of the year, it may be 2 years before AMD has a shot at getting back into the performance race.

There is nothing on AMD's road map which could threaten Intel, right now.

Hope this is not a hijack but seems generally on topic.

I am currently running a decent enough machine (see my sig) but AH apparently does not like it (tons of discos).  Other games run fine.  I'm assuming it's something with AMD dual core.  Other people seem to agree with me.  Therefore, I've begun to look at a hardware upgrade.  I'd like to stay under $1500.  Here is what I've come up with so far:

1. Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 cpu $315 from zipzoomfly

2. Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe Mobo $210 from zipzoomfly

3. Corsair XMS 2GB (2 X 1GB) 240-pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) RAM
Reported to work well with the Asus P5N32 mb. $265 from buy.com

4. Nvidia EVGA 8800 GTS 640MB video card $399 from zipzoomfly

5. ThermalTake ToughPower W0117 750W PS $152 from Page Computer

Does this sound reasonable?  Would it be worth $200 extra to go with an 8800 GTX XXX rather than the GTS?  I've always felt I should throw more money at the vid card than the rest.

Also, since we're talking Nvidia here, would I still want to run the 84.66 driver and stay away from the 90 series?  If so, maybe I should start looking at ATI?  Recommendations there?

Thanks for advice

Hummm...
I am runnin a 170 Opteron.. on an Asus A8n-sli deluxe ...
w/ a 6800 gt 2megs of GSKILL.....
no problems since I added the opimizer...
However since I reformated my HD and did a full reinstall...
I get booted to TCP after 2 mins EVERYTIME...
THe game runs very stable other than that nagging UDP dump problem

Yes stay with the 84 drivers, and stay w/ nVidia, it's only the drivers they f***ed up on, JMO

From what your sig says your running a AMD 64 3200+ , now if thats the case i'd say that the AMD dual core issue  isnt a problem for you due to the fact that the 3200+ is a single core cpu . Did you install the Amd dual core patch on a single core machine or something that might be causing a problem?   38

On monday I built a new system very similiar to homeboys specs up there.

E6600 2.4 x 2 intel duo
xfx 8800 640mb GTS
2 gig 800mhz ddr2 ram (up to 8mb on win XP)
620w enermax liberty PSU
Asus board
250gb HD
New fancy case with several big fans.

and upon skuzzy's recommendation got myself a proper ethernet modem!

All i can say so far is wow hopefully wont need touching for the next 3 years  :)

Skuzzy I know you're not a fan of AMD but how would a AMD Athlon 64 3800 perform with this game?
Title: Skuzzy! HELP! What should i put in a new box?

I run an AMD 64 3800 X2 and have no problems after I got the dual core patches installed.

I don't know if this is how Skuzzy feels but in my opinion, AMD offers more performance per dollar but Intel offers more performance per Watt.

The lowest conroe is $180, the E6400 is only $222, the E6800 (lowest of the 4M cache line) is $300. That's a pretty decent price list for the latest CPUs on the market.

It is not about what I feel.  Your statement is absolutely not true.

Dollar for dollar Intel's new Conroe CPU's offer more performance, using less power, generating less heat, and costing less or the same than a comparably performing AMD CPU (none of AMD's CPU's run cooler though).  Every review site on the net concurs with that.

Good to know... I haven't been keeping up with Intel as much lately, I've just been doing a bunch of repair work and hardly any new builds.

slight side question--my pc croaked, am fairly confident that it's the mb, and a nearly-same mb is arriving in mail tomorrow. What IS the process to introduce your hard drive to a totally new machine, were that to be my task? Have done this once or twice, and it's a frikkin nightmare. PC shops always wanna wipe the hd clean and reload Windows, but I've stumbled through it once or twice without having to do that...like..even if you have your hd backed up, it freaks out when it starts up and sees new bios, etc..?

Wiping it clean is the only way to insure a stable operating system, when going from one motherboard chipset to another.
