Title: Polling question

What kind of knowledge does it take to make a map? Do you need vast computer knowledge or is it relativley simple.

You don't need specialized knowledge to build a basic terrain. The tools that HTC provides are very good, but they do take some study of the help files and this forum before you can make full use of them.
If you're interested in building terrains don't let the apparent complexity of it intimidate you, just start with a small area basic terrain and get used to the editor and other tools before you jump into something larger and more complex.  And most importantly, build terrains for your own gratification.

The biggest problem I see is that everybody is too eager to jump headfirst into the fancy stuff... all the custom made goodies, objects, fields... before they can establish a good working knowledge of the basics of the TE and learning the minimum about what is required to build a simple, stable terrain. Then when all the fancy stuff goes screwy, they have no experience to fall back on, no sense of "how it's supposed to work".

Best advice I can give someone...

Baby steps.

Oh yeah... never set a deadline, and if you get cocky enough to do so, don't tell anyone what it is. ;)

A good working knowledge of Photoshop or Paint Shop helps and would make your life easier, but isn't absolutely necessary.

The TE itself is quite powerful, but as Detch said it takes some getting use to. And if you really get into terrains there are many other programs out there to help you accomplish what you want to do.

Oh..Dux... 2 weeks :)

Here's a tutorial to help you learn the basics. NOT intended to teach you how to make operable MA terrains, just teaches you how to make a working terrain that can be used:
