wow, welcome to the intardnet!

There is a difference betwen knowing what it means vs. where it came from or how it came into being.

Now in my case I'm the total noob. I can't even read it nor do I know what it means ( before I read the wikopedia link ).

Actually, to be totaly honest about it, I really don't care to know. If someone wants to comunicate with me they need to do it in either English or Portuguese. If they don't care to use either, they are not talking to me so therefore it ceases to be of any concern to me.

the wikipedia appears to leave out the answer to your question DREDger:

As I understand it, 1337 came about so that in the early days of the internet hackers and people that didn't want their news groups and such picked up with a simple word search started replacing certain vowels with numbers such as E =3 and A=4

then after this the wiki fills in the rest.

hope this helps and also hope that my memory is right :-)

I'm with you, even though I can read it. Once you know what the little retards are typing it's obvious.

It came originally from pagers... remember pagers? People worked out a code using numbers for letters so they could send free messages.
